MADAME X album reviews

Article in French that in addition to a review of the album, reviews the criticism of his age, with the comparison with Springsteen "age becomes for him an added value, an old age whose nobility would only belong to men, that he would touch there to absolute virility: the ultimate grace, the infinite wisdom. whiskey that gets better with age, the woman like a Coke who, stale with time, loses its bubbles and its spiciness. "

On the album he says in particular

"Madonna is never as powerful as when she assumes to be dead and come back from the dead." In "Medellin", a song that disrupts her melody, Mirwais installs it in an elegiac vibration over her past, ready to relive what she did not live "Dark Ballet" plunges her into the skin of Joan of Arc, a way of double sacrificed, that she plays in the superb video that accompanies it, by the formidable Mykki Blanco, whom she had sung in Israel, during the Eurovision, in a way of political claim (but which no one has noted) since it is a question of crimes which remain ignored and which are nevertheless made in the light of day. "God Control" is a summit, given as an operation of pure plastic force, in turn disco, gospel, Gregorian chant and hymn against firearms. "Batuka" repeats Cape Verde in litany, "Killers who are partying And the terribly successful "I don t search I find "multiplies the images of Lady X. And this is perhaps the most radiant point of Madonna's songs: this moment when each song changes, as if it would die precisely at the end of each song - as parenthesis. More than pop, Madonna is baroque in the style of a Kanye West who finds here with Madonna an opponent of size as if the Life of Pablo responded, by his art of collage, The Life of Mado."

He ends the article by saying

"A return to a political vision that fortunately does not pass by yet another anti-Trump speech (which serve no purpose but participate in the generalized fair that it feeds) but a political response of form: a form where each song is a collage of influences, an operation again Frankensteinnienne to claim dissimilarity as a founding principle, as Madonna has always done: the dissimilarity as a paradoxical principle of recognition. It must be said here, in Madonna, The autotune is political. The drum machine is political. The presence of young Maluma is political. His musical desire is political. His standing is political.Medonna is political, fundamentally political because she is woman for women and women, sometimes at risk of her music but she definitely embodies the counter-figure of contemporary parlor - a definitive heroine in very dark times. "

Perfectly put, and this person totally gets the hypocrisy of the 'woke' world of today.

Killers Who Are Partying is an amazing song, and it’s sad to see the pin head logic when it comes to the lyrics.  These are the same people who probably post pics on their social media saying “I am Pulse” and “Je suis Charlie” and have zero problem with it.  The song is a show of solidarity, and the chorus rebukes any argument that she is trying to BE any of those groups.  People’s idiocy in this day and age is astounding.

THIS!!!!!!

I adore Killers Who Are Partying. Stand out literally on first listen, and couldn't wrap my head around why so many "critics" had issues with this one. Some people, even paid professionals, really are dense.

I’m definitely not keen on these reviewers implying that her post-2005 output has been shit, especially since that couldn’t be further from the truth. Just review the new record without going into some drawn-out theatrics about your personal opinion of her last few albums. Is that hard?

:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:  Thank you!!!!!

I think it’s important to remember that traditionally music critics have been straight male, rock-oriented, unprogressive, and anti-pop. I don’t see much of an evolution in this, other than in the way we’ve see nerds transform into hipsters because they adhere to the uniform society has prescribed and they went to the gym thanks to the tech industry’s economic clout and subsequent cultural takeover! The very notion of genre-shifting gives these people hives, and so Madonna is mostly not seen as an artist, but as a pillaging, cultural-appropriating, mediocrely talented entertainer who has simply skated over the zeitgeist as if by sheer force of narcissistic determination. These, I believe, are the assumptions of the writers of each 3/5, and some of the 4/5 reviews we have seen.

There has nearly always been a resistance to the notion that Madonna is creative and original. Instead, the only explanation for her success has to come from her deft manipulation and deceit. It’s the very essence of the patriarchy and its pernicious misogyny, and while the popular genres are no longer rock and soul, critics seem to approach Madonna as if she were still defined by another era when that was the case.

My main point regarding critics and why I personally find them all essentially disappointing is that, as journalists, you’d expect them to seek a unique perspective on their subject. However, nearly every review is written as if based off of some version of a Cliff Notes bio born outside of context and the broader scope of investigation. This leads to a very monotonous, seemingly lazy approach to understanding the music, and most certainly to understanding Madonna herself; it’s as if the writer and reader require a revisionist history lesson in order to even begin to grasp who Madonna is and what she has done, the most irritating common thread in the collective narrative being that Madonna was once an iffy trendsetter by design, but has been assaulting the world with an uneven and mediocre output of trend-chasing albums since she was whipped into submission post-American Life. Ironically, you’d get the feeling that some of her fans agree with this narrative, thus reinforcing my theory that there are a good deal of masochists among us to have chosen to endure something they don’t actually appreciate for more than a decade! It’s as if Madonna has a requirement to be purely confessional, or limited to the naïveté of the anthemic disco-stomper. If her music and lyrics don’t address this need more obviously she has failed: she didn’t become Joni Mitchell, so how dare she pick up a guitar and write words that aren’t tantalizing, veiled confessionals; she didn’t grow grey, and become the wistful, nonchalant vagabond, writing enigmatic academic poetry like Patti Smith, and so how dare she manifest as a real sentient human being on a real human journey towards awakening and enlightenment. Oh! And we mustn’t forget that she is the only human being alive to wish to preserve her youthfulness. She should just stop investing in herself altogether beyond her past, acceptable accomplishments, and she should especially unplug from all technology because, well, she’s been old for over ten years and must stop challenging herself and the general public through this outrageous desire to invent, to innovate, to inspire and to be inspired. Otherwise, no matter how interesting it seems, it is “BIZARRE”.

Is it bizarre? Sure, it’s a narrative that deserves to be explored to a degree, but if you repeat something enough, it becomes the truth. “Madonna must fit into the quirky box now if she wants us to qualify this output”! It’s both disheartening and hysterical all at once!

I have read very little of value that deserves to become the truth in these reviews. I can make up my own mind about what is good and bad, and Madame X is quintessentially Madonna at her best. Whether or not that is good enough for someone else doesn’t interest me much at all unless they are able to tell me why with knowledge, passion and intelligence, which is what a music critic is paid to do after all! I’m still waiting.

Good god I love your posts. Thank you for joining the forum (especially at this time), and please post more.

The berating tone of some of those reviews is getting on my nerves more and more. It's always the tiresome "Madonna should remember she is Madonna". It is such a shallow criticism. These people simply don't realize that this is the Madonna of now and not the Madonna of the past. If they have a problem with that, then it is their problem, not hers. They want a Madonna that fits their expectations the most. Something that is obviously not on Madonnas list of priorities. meet other peoples expectations. Never has, never will. Maybe after 35 years those critics should come to terms with the fact that Madonna is above all an artist with her own vision, not just a product. She will not bow down to market needs and other peoples expectations of what THEY want from her. They won't get it. The real power of an artist in todays World to über-selfish customers is if you still continue to create YOUR art or if you surrender and simply provide want costumers want you to provide which basically means the death of an artist. More power to Madonna for rejecting being the Madonna THEY want. And what's the alternative? Taylor Swift and Katy Perry recently became Taylor Swift and Katy Perry again. I dare to say this regressive move is worse than anything Madonna has ever done in her career and it perfectly illustrates that there is no need for a critic to tell Madonna to remember she is Mdonnna. She is very much aware of who she is.

That goes for a lot of fans too.

I agree with every word you said. And, yes, Killers is a standout, necessary track indeed.

Some really nasty things have appeared in American press. 🤮🤮🤮

I won't share them here since they don't count to Metacritic score.

To say that I'm disappointed by the reception of this beutiful album in the USA would be an understatement.

Now I can fully understand the success of Donald Trump.

Yeah, but to tell Madonna how she should write songs about "wrinkles and menopause" is wicked.

Imagine somebody saying that Bruce should write about minoxidil and viagra? One of the most important principles in Gender Equality nowadays is that more women are in charge of communication offices instead of white christian mature dudes who only care about football and fake politics. Meanwhile, micro-inequalities happen all the time and nobody is noticing because they don't give a damn!

It makes me sick.

It seems nobody has a problem when most disgusting things are said about Madonna.

Where is outrage? SJW? Other pop stars to support her?

Double standards.

Sorry if it's not the right place to post this. My friend told me that Madonna was on our national TV. it was about her releasing a new album and they showed a clip of crave. my friend told me that his family were amazed at how young she looked.

Everybody knows Madonna here. she is generally seen as a very liberated woman who does what she likes. my friend loves that about her.

For me, the most appalling thing is the lack of support she gets from lesser pop artists who should all be defending her.  Basic, gutless pop princesses.

This is absolutely disgusting.

And these reviews just prove her point about ageism over and over and over. We should make a compilation of all this hateful ageist and sexist shit she gets in the reviews and spread it around far and wide via instagram, twitter, etc. Naming and shaming them is the best approach, really. Otherwise, nothing will change!

Really bizarre (that word again....haha) how "woke" people are........EXCEPT when it comes to Madonna apparently. All bets are off! Say whatever nasty, sexist, misogynist thing you'd like and it's OK!! Hypocrites.

Sooooo......at the end of the day, in terms of Metacritic, MX is going to end up around the same score as RH and MDNA?? lol

I've said it for years, but truly, it doesn't matter what she does at this point. Perhaps that's her mentality now too.......zero fucks cuz at the end of the day, why does it matter? They won't rate the music anyways, they just rate their perception of her.

Perfect post!  I do think she could end up slightly higher than the last three albums if Mojo, Attitude, and PopMatters come through for her.

But at the end of the day, it’s a masterpiece that the fans are loving, plus many critics as well, and it will stand the test of time.

Has the early one that was 84/100 or something been added? I keep forgetting the name and still haven't seen it.

Alternative press i think, but it was just a report with songs scores not a real review.

BTW Metacritic added the COS bad review and the score is still 70
