Mark Zuckerberg announces major changes on Facebook, Instagram & Threads aimed to promote free speech following election:

1. Replacement of fact-checkers with community notes

2. Less restrictions on topics like immigration, gender & more that are “out of touch” with mainstream discourse

3. New approach to policy enforcement that reduces overall censorship and focuses more on illegal, high-severity violations

4. Bringing back civic content such as politics

5. Trust, safety and content moderation teams will move to Texas

6. Collaboration with Donald Trump to protect free speech worldwide

And it’s just a start.

In the last year, I asked myself many times why I was still on Facebook and Instagram… guess it’s going to give me one more reason to leave.

We have always known Zuckerberg is a lying, unethical and self serving weasel. Twitter is now a complete cesspool of right wing, misogynist, racist,  conspiracy obsessed and science hating propagandists and Meta is now going back to that again.

The billionaire tech giants showing their true colours again and the world is going to suffer from it.

From a business point of view this decision makes no sense at all. Meta (Facebook and Instagram) makes its money from advertising. Advertisers stay away from platforms where hate and misinformation is rampant. And this will be the consequence of such move. Just look at the cesspool that is X. The difference is that X is a private company and if it's burning money that's on Musk alone. But Meta is public and there are shareholders and their dividends will be lower once revenues and profits decrease. In addition the stock value will fall.

I really hope there will be a reaction from the EU immediately, a pre-emptive warning to fine him into oblivion if Meta does not abide by EU laws. Just to put Zuckerberg in his place and to put pressure on him.

"Free Speech".  FUCK that.

This has never been about free speech. It's about one thing only - Propaganda. Bigotry. Lies.

FUCK all these rich fascist assholes.

Totally agree. Free speech argument is so misconstrued and corrupted.  It is not free speech to give factually incorrect information and lies. We all want free speech - but not lies presented as facts.

Great points. Musk only purchased Twitter so he could use that platform to push his own twisted dangerous agenda.  I never thought he bought it for profit - just to use it to advocate for what benefits him. Such an evil man.

Zuckerberg is twisted and horrible too but he has always wanted massive dividends and could not care less about truth or doing the right thing. He is just crawling to Trump and setting his own agenda.

I love the community notes on Twitter. It's called out so many lies and misinformation on both sides so I think it's a great move by MZ although I don't really use Facebook now.

And is anyone actually using Threads?

^^^ OMG. This is actually brilliant because it reveals the whole issue in a clever way. And he can't even sue any those people for libel or defamation because it is satire in the most obvious way. I love it.

You're completely missing the point -libel and slander laws applied to Facebook before and removing fact checking won't change any of that.

While that post is obviously satire, anyone actually calling another person similar names will get sued into the ground (and would have previously) - there have been multiple cases in the UK of people, including celebrities calling others paedos etc and getting successfully sued.

I'm wondering if this is a financial decision - community notes is done by the audience free of charge and meta have had some big financial hits recently.

^^^ And such comments clearly show he is a tech bro who does not really understand the issue. His argument is clearly a slippery slope. Just because it was mentioned somewhere that represents a certain prestige, does not mean the comment or discussion is appropriate. He also misses the point that Hegseths comment stems from pure misogyny. He could not provide real reasoning why women should not fight in battles. Zuckerberg seems to believe if someone of a certain importance says something it is kind of stamp of approval and therefore it is worth to have a discussion? Again slippery slope. Based on this very logic people will have right to discuss the Holocaust based on the reasoning of the Nazi German government as well. Interestingly, Facebooks guidelines have not changed in this regards. At least not when it comes to the jewish part. Gays and disabled people no longer enjoy this protection. Hypocrisy much.

He is clearly a sociopath. He does not seem to understand how the real world works. All he cares about is algorithms and money. Also, in his interviews (unless it is about tech) he comes across as someone who is not well versed on many things outside of tech. And the result of this lack of knowledge is to be seen know. He opened a can of worms and struggles with the results.

Let's not forget that Facebook was set up to judge women's attractiveness. Lowlife from the start.

I think he, Musk and other similar types will destroy themselves and bring each other down. Massive egos who see everything in black and white but can't deal with real life complexities.

Tell me that's one of those fake news jokes 😡

It all comes out in the wash. Their true colours shining through now that they can stand behind the bully in chief.

This is the problem with the patriarchy. It’s insidious, and bred from such an early age. It’s 2025. I’m depressed to spend another decade arguing against this shit that has been regurgitated for generations.

Why do I want to vomit? 🤢

Because he's so fuckig ugly inside out... A gay Stevie Wonder wouldn’t blow him in a dark room on account of that face... even if he was packing a rock solid 9 inch with proper juice and girth to boot.

Never need to see Zuckerberg's mug again. People need to leave these platforms en masse, myself included. I'm on FB for Marketplace, and I only ever use the website, not wanting to grant an actual app permissions, but my intensifying sense is that even this is too much.

If not for work/professional reasons, I would have committed Facebook suicide years ago. Now I’m locked out of my account… After a hacking incident in 2023, I was only able to log back in for three days before my computer rebooted and ended my session. I have not been able to log in successfully since then. I wanted to reset my password, but I can’t because the hackers changed it, so I don’t know what it is. Meta is completely unhelpful with this whole situation. Very frustrating. So … yeah. I would love to have nothing more to do with them. Just slightly unsettling to know that my account is still vulnerable out there and I have no access to it. I eventually had to open up another account (which is against their terms — to have more than one account) just to be able to do my job (serving as the administrator of the official FB presence for my work).

At one point, a Meta service bot told me they had reviewed my work’s ad account and said that their investigation revealed “no suspicious activity.” Meanwhile, they had required me to record and submit a video through a platform — it ended up being between 15 and 20 minutes, and to this day, no one ever watched it. Maddening. They have no incentive to crack down on actual crime — because it just makes them more money. The FBI agent with whom I spoke (because I was referred by the police, with whom I had to file a report) was very critical of Meta because of their lack of cooperation with law enforcement.

(I don’t have an app on my phone, either, pithy … I only use it on a computer/laptop through a web browser.)

Yes.  The absolute rot and insidious misogyny is proudly on display again.  Zuckerberg has always been a horrible heartless man.  The whole reason he started Facebook in the first place was to rate females - hardly the actions of someone who values women.  All of these toxic men such as Andrew Tate etc are now being pushed onto young guys and rampant sexist attitudes are ruling again.  It is far more frightening than people imagine.  Gay people, transgender people and even disabled people are now being ridiculed and hated too.  All proudly saying they are "anti-woke" and using that description for anything.   Why social media has become so much more of a cesspool than ever and with no fact checking or proper moderation - will only get worse and worse.

Sorry you have had to go through all of that Peter.  It is dreadful that Meta is so unhelpful and corrupt.
