There IS a BIG difference between gay & straight, especially in Asia. Because not all Asian gays are comfortable of being out as gay like you & the westerners. You may come across some out and proud Asian gay on the internet but they DO NOT represent the entire gay community in Asia. Most of the Asian countries are conservative and gays are not widely embraced and accepted and often discriminated. The local government expressed concern of these closet people would not come forward to get tested and may further infect others unknowingly. These people are afraid they may lose their job if being exposed as gay and may not be accepted by the company/society/family. Even though the government had promised they will keep their identity confidential, but if someone or company or family finds out you went for the test, you're indirectly "out" yourself unintentionally to them. If these people are "other person" like what you'd mentioned, all of them are most likely to come forward for the test to facilitate quarantine & contact tracing etc 'cos they are not afraid of losing anything. 38 minutes ago, runa said: Totally agree. Other closeted gay people fear they may be outed to their families or employers if the government uses contact tracing to require them to get tested for COVID-19. The man visited five locations — King Club, Queen, Trunk, Soho and H.I.M. — during the first weekend in May, soon after South Korea relaxed its social distancing measures to allow nightspots and other businesses to reopen amid declining case numbers. Related: South Korea discharged its first transgender soldier. She’s planning to sue. Though the man admitted himself to a nearby hospital after he tested positive on Wednesday, May 6, health authorities have tested more than 2,450 people who went to same nightspots as him. The officials are still trying to track about 3,000 more people using credit card numbers, cell phone location data, and footage from CCTV cameras. The Washington Post reports that since the outbreak, South Koreans searched mostly for “gay club” and “gay coronavirus” on local social media and have also posted “hate speech and images claiming to show the ‘filthy goings-on’ at gay bars” that caused the infections. One of the posts included a video of bar patrons, asking others to help identify them. The South Korean LGBTQ-rights group Chingusai said that “stigma-inducing” media reports could be counterproductive for infection-control efforts because “These threats make it harder for those who came into contact with a virus carrier to report themselves due to fears of getting outed.” According to The Guardian, Kookmin Ilbo, “a local media outlet with links to an evangelical church,” and other media outlets reported on businesses the infected man visited, revealing the identities, ages, and workplaces of some of their clientele. One man t0ld the publication that he’s contemplating suicide because of the social and professional humiliation he’ll likely suffer if he’s outed to his anti-gay colleagues. “If they find out that I was at a gay club, they would most likely tell me to leave under some other pretext or make my life there a living hell so I would have no choice but to leave,” he said. While it’s not illegal to be LGBTQ in South Korea, queer people experience discrimination for deviating from the social norms of marrying in order to have kids who will eventually care for their aging parents. Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon said that 3,000 people suspected of visiting the same nightspots either provided false phone numbers or didn’t answer calls when contacted about possible infection. He also promised that the city will set up “anonymous testing” so that individuals can come forward without fear of being publicly connected to the gay spots. https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2020/05/south-korea-threatens-lgbtq-population-86-coronavirus-cases-linked-gay-clubs/

elijah
The South Korean city of Seoul has experienced another outbreak of the coronavirus, which reportedly originated with a gay man. The patient in question visited several of the city’s gay bars last weekend. Now, the city’s LGBTQ community faces a major public backlash. The 31-year-old man likely infected at least 14 other people, according to The Guardian. Now members of the public have begun soliciting funds on social media to have the city’s gay venues shut down for good. Though homosexuality is not illegal in South Korea, queer citizens still face social stigma and discrimination. With the outbreak of COVID-19 traced to gay venues, that stigma could get even worse. Related: PHOTOS: Sexy South Korean gay guys emerge from the shadows “I don’t usually go to gay clubs and it’s been two years since I visited Itaewon [Seoul’s gay neighborhood],” said Hong Yoo-jin, a 35-year-old IT worker. “But I read on gay community websites that Youtubers are joining gay apps to out gay men live. So myself and everyone I know have deleted our photos from all of our accounts.” “The company where I work is a regular Korean company, which means they are very anti-gay,” another unidentified gay man told The Guardian. “I have taken part in conversations where my boss and colleagues said all gay men should be put to death in a gas chamber. If they find out that I was at a gay club, they would most likely tell me to leave under some other pretext or make my life there a living hell so I would have no choice but to leave.” South Korean police say they have the names of 1,500 people who visited gay venues last weekend. Law enforcement is also encouraging anyone who may have visited any of the locations go get tested for COVID-19 immediately. https://www.queerty.com/south-korea-faces-major-anti-queer-backlash-covid-19-outbreak-20200510
karbatal
Omg, they are always trying to put the blame onto some minority. Here in Spain the right wing has been blaming the 8 March women demonstration as the cause why we had so many cases. Of course, the fact that that same weekend there were football games and etc doesn't seem to be important. That gay club thing is absurd. This will happen all the time because you only need one sick person to start another global pandemic. If South Corea pretends to have zero cases they'll have to close every border until there is a vaccine

horn
The main concern is these gays may not go for the test and spread to others unknowingly. It took Korean government months to clear all the covid-19 but because of one prick, all previous effort are wasted and gone down to the drain and back to fucking square one. Coronavirus: South Korea reports new infection cluster linked to nightclubs A 29-year-old man visited three nightclubs that had at least 1,500 patrons in Seoul’s popular Itaewon neighbourhood over the weekend Local media initially identified the nightspots as ‘gay clubs’, sparking criticism that it could lead to discrimination and deter club-goers from getting tested SCMP | Park Chan-kyong, Associated Press and Reuters Published: 2:16pm, 8 May, 2020 South Korea confirmed 12 new coronavirus cases on Friday, its first increase above 10 in five days, as authorities warned numbers would increase as it had identified a new cluster of infections linked to a 29-year-old man. The IT company employee had spread the virus to at least 14 others as he wandered around the capital Seoul and four neighbouring cities over a long weekend period at the start of the month, said the Korea Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. While the 12 cases were those confirmed in the 24 hours before midnight on Thursday, more cases had since been detected, with 12 of these – including three foreigners and a South Korean soldier – linked to three nightclubs in Seoul’s popular multicultural neighbourhood of Itaewon. The man visited the three clubs last Friday and early on Saturday and there were at least 1,500 people there, authorities said. The man did not wear a mask while in the clubs and only started showing symptoms late on Saturday. The government now plans to issue an administrative order asking entertainment venues such as nightclubs and bars to voluntarily suspend operations for at least one more month, Yoon Tae-ho, director general for public health policy, announced on Friday. The new cases are a setback for South Korea, which was initially the worst-hit country outside China before a mix of widespread testing and contact tracing helped keep infections down. The country, with 10,822 confirmed cases and 256 deaths, plans to reopen schools in stages from next week with professional sports returning to action without fans in the stands. Unlike other countries, South Korea did not impose a lockdown or mandate closure of businesses and this has contributed to strong support for President Moon Jae-in, whose approval ratings hit a record high for any democratically elected South Korean leader at the same point in their in office on Friday. The figure was 71 per cent according to a weekly Gallup Korea tracking poll. Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip on Friday urged people who visited the clubs in Itaewon early on Saturday to stay home and contact authorities if they developed symptoms. “It is highly likely that there are more cases down the road,” he said. The case occurred in circumstances “where it is very hard to track patients’ movements”, he said. “It is like dropping a blob of ink into clean water” that could undermine health authorities’ efforts to contain the virus, he said, calling for people to endure inconveniences in combating the virus.
