Camacho Posted June 3, 2020 Share Posted June 3, 2020 Poll: 40% of Republicans won’t get coronavirus vaccine By LAUREN THEISEN NEW YORK DAILY NEWS JUN 02, 2020 | 10:53 PM In its short existence, the coronavirus has already taken the lives of more than 100,000 Americans and infected almost 2 million at least. But even though the search for a vaccine is one of scientists’ top priorities at the moment, many in the U.S. say that they don’t want one, even if it’s free. A new ABC News/Washington Post poll of 1,001 adults asked them the question, “If a vaccine that protected you from the coronavirus was available for free, would you a) definitely or probably get it or b) definitely or probably not get it?” A mere 71% percent of Americans answered that they would get it, with Republicans and Evangelical Christians in particular showing the most opposition. In the poll, 40% of respondents who identified as part of the GOP did not want the vaccine, with 37% of Evangelicals saying the same. For those who said they wouldn’t get vaccinated, half of them said that it was because they didn’t trust vaccines in general, while 23% said it was because they didn’t think the virus was dangerous enough to warrant it. As ABC notes, interest in a vaccine is significantly higher in areas that have experienced severe outbreaks of coronavirus compared to those that haven’t, which means that support could increase as the pandemic continues. But if these results hold, and many Americans remain opposed to getting treatment that would prevent coronavirus infections, then finding a vaccine may only be another part of the battle to eradicate the virus, and not the endpoint many hope for.
