Ugly Hecty Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Anyone notice how more & more hit songs these days have more of a folkier sound from the likes of Avicii, Mumford & Sons, the Lumineers, and even that trashy Pitbull / Ke$ha "Timber" song? It always makes me wonder whether songs like "Love Spent", "Gone", "Intervention", "Easy Ride" and a good portion of the "Ray Of Light" album would be more appreciated on radio now than back then like "Don't Tell Me" was in '01.
boy skeffington Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Yep. I heard "WAKE ME UP" today and I thought...this is Madonna from MUSIC and AMERICAN LIFE album...finally. First it was IMPRESSIVE INSTANT and now it's this. IMHO, she created the sound...
Starman Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 American Life has a much harder and edgier sound than these songs and its blended in the same part of the song
Crystal Coffin Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Anyone notice how more & more hit songs these days have more of a folkier sound from the likes of Avicii, Mumford & Sons, the Lumineers, and even that trashy Pitbull / Ke$ha "Timber" song? I have NEVER heard any of those. Gotta check them out.
Crystal Coffin Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 ^ you really do live in a crystal coffin. Sugar, I listen to UP DOWN SUITE.
Seraphim Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 If so Madonna does it much better, because I didn't like any of those songs lol
neutrocks Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Lovin' a lot of the new sounds coming out of these folksy rock/dance songs lately. I'm not sure if the sound Madonna was going for is exactly the same, but I always thought Madonna sounded great on the more folk type songs she did. And really? No one has heard of Mumford & Suns and Avicii? Both have had some huge songs, especially Avicii lately.
VogueMusic Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Yep... even Twink Direction's new album is quite pop folksy. I've never really been into that 'folksy' sound...but Madonna brings that certain something to it... Mumford and Sons...Lumineers...that stuff makes me want to date a cousin.
Icykiller Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I think she was on to something, a sound of her own. Madonna's sound. I don't know if she was ahead of her time with it or not.
Nightshade Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I think she was on to something, a sound of her own. Madonna's sound. I don't know if she was ahead of her time with it or not. Not to diss M, her folktronica was very unique for her, but Beth Orton and Ron Sexsmith were doing it (and getting critical acclaim) before Madonna ever did. I would say that Madonna did bring it to the mainstream and was the first major star to try it on.
Guest Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Electronic and folk fusion is not new. It's been in music for a long time and there has been lots of other artists doing it.
Nonoka Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I have NEVER heard any of those. Gotta check them out. You should check them out, their songs are better than Girl Gone Wild. But then again, (almost) everything's better than GGW.
latinbold Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Impressive Instant is one of coolest songs ever.
HolidayGuy Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Yah, like NS said, M was influenced by Beth Orton. Like other things in her career, she brought it to the mainstream.

horn Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I always feel that M did folktronica for the sake of Guy Ritchie who's a big folks music fan.
Guest Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Impressive Instant is one of coolest songs ever. definitely one of my favorite folk songs, as well.
