Top US spy agency says coronavirus was ‘not manmade or genetically modified’

  • The top U.S. spy agency said for the first time on Thursday that the nation’s collective intelligence community does not believe that the coronavirus was manmade or genetically modified.
  • The statement from the Office of Director of National Intelligence contradicts reports suggesting that the new coronavirus had been developed by Chinese scientists in a government biological weapons laboratory.

WASHINGTON — The top U.S. spy agency said for the first time on Thursday that the nation’s collective intelligence community does not believe that the coronavirus was manmade or genetically modified.

“The Intelligence Community also concurs with the wide scientific consensus that the COVID-19 virus was not manmade or genetically modified,” the Office of Director of National Intelligence said in a rare statement.

“The IC will continue to rigorously examine emerging information and intelligence to determine whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan,” it added.

The statement from the Office of Director of National Intelligence contradicts reports suggesting that the new coronavirus had been developed by Chinese scientists in a government biological weapons laboratory.

The U.S. intelligence community was tasked with examining whether the virus that caused the global pandemic emerged accidentally from a Chinese research lab, current and former U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News.

The virus has infected more than 3.2 million worldwide, and though many have recovered more than 227,971 have died. In the U.S. more than 1 million cases have been reported so far, with nearly 61,000 deaths, the most of any nation, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Earlier this month, the nation’s highest-ranking military officer told reporters at the Pentagon that U.S. intelligence agencies were taking “a hard look” at whether the coronavirus originated in a Wuhan lab.

“We don’t know for certain,” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs U.S. Army Gen. Mark Milley said on April 14.

When asked about the intelligence, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said, “This is something we’ve been watching closely now for some time,” adding that the results of the investigation are thus far “inconclusive.”

COVID-19 started in Nov 2019 and US knew all the while but Trump called it as conspiracy/fake news.

And now US are blaming China not sharing info with them earlier? :manson:

Donald Trump claims to have seen evidence to substantiate the unproven theory that the coronavirus originated at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, despite US intelligence agencies’ conclusion that the virus was “not manmade or genetically modified”.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology is a biosafeL4 level of laboratory and it is co managed by the World Health Organisation. The CIA didn't confirm it's weaponised and lab made but they also said they are looking into every possible option, they didn't disregard the possibility alltogether. Besides "top US spy agency" means nothing, it is part of their job to lie, if it serves elite purposes

WTF is a top US Spy agency? :rotfl:
Also, nobody is looking to the US for reliable intel about COVID-19 Or... well anything,
might as well listen to Iran, China, Russia or The Pope.

People haven't learnt a damn thing from Iraq, Lybia, Sirya and countless other examples. Besides, even if it's man made or if it accidentally escaped from that lab in China who's to say that a Chinese scientist or official did it. There would still be the possibility that a US secret services agent on Chinese territory did it or a group of them, whatever

The US elites hate China and Russia because they want to trade with Europe and they've been losing their grip and monopoly on the world economy for a couple of decades. Europe "has to remain" the US lapdog on all policies

Regardless of the the fact that those two countries are autocratic states the US dread the prospect of a multipolar world. They have been destroying the Middle East and manipulating its leadership for ages, in order to appropriate its immense energy resources. And that's just as autocratic and dangerous an attitude. You're either with us or we invade/bomb you

Why do they (and the UK and other continental European countries) keep sending billions and arms to Saudi Arabia if they claim they are behind 9/11??

It's beyond crazy. Sunni Saudi Arabia is the worst face of fundamentalism within the Muslim galaxy, yet they ostracise Shiite Muslim countries like Iran and Syria, a country with a millennial secular culture where Christians have always been respected. It's a disgrace really

Anybody looking at the US for leadership is in serious need of going back to doing their homework, the only leadership they can provide is towards a path of global extinction

Trump wants to pin this on the Chinese so he can go after them for reparations. It will also do his campaign a lot of good.

Who knows what is true as both the US and Chinese governments are two of the worst fur transparency.

Precisely

As if the US hasn't been on a footpath to war with China for years anyway, for far less than pristine reasons. And with Russia too of course. God forbid they lose eternal monopoly. Unfortunately so many people still vehemently believe in the fable of the Defenders of the world. Those people need to wake up and smell the coffee. Fast

But China and Russia are autocratic.  Xi Jinping (since recently announced as president for life) and Putin rule unopposed. USA is far from great, especially with Dumb at the forefront. I d say they are at their all time WORST. However, unlike Russia or China, they still have functioning courts: their judicial system managed to stop Dumb from fulfilling his most idiotic promises and ideas. But of course, the fact that Dumb who lost with 5 mil votes to Hillary continues to rule is one of the biggest mysteries today :).

You're completely missing the point of what I'm saying. The original point was that "US Top Spy Agency" means very little, considering that American governments of different political colours seem to have received completely fabricated "intel" (later revealed to be so) time and time again over the years

Secondly I'm not comparing three heads of state individually. I'm saying that, although China and Russia ARE autocratic states, the United States of America do not behave ANY LESS autocratically as a political, military, commercial and diplomatic block when they many times have launched into international tirades and attacks against sovreign countries that have not attacked any other sovereign countries, simply because the sentenced countries in question do things that do not fit into the US govt geopolitical interests, using the pretext of their citizens protection

And they did so without conforming to International Law, with complete disregard of United Nations Resolutions or lack thereof, through unilateral action not based on the existing international parameters (and another country that wipes their lower parts with any UN piece of paper is Israel of course)

If in terms of a multipolar commercial world that, like it or not we have become and are becoming increasingly more, Europe even suggests that they might want to buy gas from Russia, because they don't accept US/Saudi Arabia overinflated prices, the US invents a new menace from the outside to discourage this shift in commercial axis and an eventual loss of its decades long monopoly. That IS illegal and AUTOCRATIC and VIOLENT.

And there are countless other examples of this type of bullying behaviour any time "an asset" of the Empire gets "threatened".

If you want to talk about how truly democratic the USA are, domestically speaking, that's a whole other chapter. Lots to discuss about that too. Not so free and just as it it seems either, among most Western countries
