This once again made me realize just how damn good RH is. Some matchups here are brutal and easily could’ve been ties. But I went ahead and made the tough decisions. Two amazing albums.

Madame X is easily on her Top 5 albums. Rebel Heart, while having some great/good songs is all over the place as an album. And tracklist is weird and it might have the weakest production overall of any Madonna album. Actually I find it more of a mess than MDNA and in my bottom 3 albums from Madonna.

Has the "Rebel Heart is terrible" narrative begun already? I swear each new record it seems customary to bash or hate the previous record when everyone was raving about it minus the demos (which is better) discussion. Both are great albums.

I think Rebel Heart's tracks are easily catchy and replayable and Madame X is more polarizing and works as a body of work as opposed to single tracks. It's a full course meal while RH is more choose your options/sides.

To many fans, Madame X is the first time she released something that genuinely felt like an A-L-B-U-M since 2008 (some might say 2005) instead of "many songs made to be put together on a CD". I think it's not that hard to fathom.

Sure. Each time a new album drops it's time to slag the previous. I just don't buy it because each is a return to form, the real Madonna, cohesive, essays people write then with the following record it'll be "Madame X had a lot of issues, autotune, not GP friendly, bad singles, too many features."

We all have our favorites, but like it or not, a consensus forms regarding an artist’s body of work.  You can look at the multiple “ranking Madonna albums” articles that have come out over the past few years since Rebel Heart, and almost all of them have HC and MDNA near the bottom, with Rebel slightly higher but still mid to low range.  It already feels like Madame X is going to be one that is considered among her best, and yes, the test of time might prove me wrong.  But there is a feeling that this is a return to form critically.  Obviously there is big excitement every time she releases an album, which you can’t say about many artists these days.

Personally I do not feel like she has any bad albums, but she has albums that are less extraordinary than others.  Madame X I predict will be considered among her greatest.

Those basic fans with no vision or any solid framework of thinking whatsoever will definitely write those essays. Many others including myself, won't.

I don’t think there is a “Rebel Heart is terrible narrative” happening tbh.  I love Rebel Heart. It has some of her best melodies. However, Madame X shows painfully clear what RH was missing. Focus, a great flow and an impeccable production. I think RH had some very strong tracks but Madame X is Madonna at her absolute best from start to finish. It’s not a collection of songs but a cohesive album. I never rate her albums against each other. They all have a special place in my heart. But some just take up a little more space in it than others. And Madame X has currently chosen one of the biggest rooms in my heart and I think she is going to make herself comfortable there for quite a long time.

^^ THIS. Great post, I agree strongly!

The whole "We should stop comparing her albums, don't pit one against the other" sentiment is quite an irritant that defeats the very purpose of having a space to discuss her musical output. Fans of other artists do the same things as well, they COMPARE, they RANK, they RATE, these are normal conversations that modern humans have about music, movies, books.

Madame X is clearly more well-received than RH and MDNA, similar to how ROL received more acclaims than BS and Erotica. I am just not sure if this is too hard to be understood?

Madame X is a much stronger album. It's more cohesive and refined. I do love many songs from RH but the whole project needed editing and less re-working/remixing after the leaks.

This is nonsense. Literally no one was slagging "Confessions" when "Hard Candy" came out. Most fans -- and certainly the loudest fans -- were pissed that "HC" wasn't "Confessions II."

Fast forward four years, many of these same fans were re-evaluating "HC" and giving it high marks for its warm melodies after hearing a detached, almost bored M sing over lifeless EDM tracks on "MDNA."

I can't. For example I really like I rise and Best Night both, same with Future and UB. I don't care for come alive and iconic etc.

For me, Madame X is a masterpiece. I've been waiting for this since I saw her performing on Super Bowl and thought this human being is so much more than rest of the... well world. That's when I got more into Madonna, just to derail the topic 😂). Would love if Rebel Heart was double album as it was intended. Still adore many songs from it though.

no comparison at all. Every song on MX is better than RH.

How anyone can choose Bodyshop over Faz Gostoso is beyond me!

Prefer Bodyshop.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.  Something that is sadly lacking on this forum lately with people being told off for liking or disliking songs.
