xtaticboy82 Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Just curious 'coz it only went at number 28 on BIllboard Hot 100. I know it was a UK number 1, but in Mediatraffic it was # 4 on 2000 year-end charts with the Glorious Music #1 song for that year! http://www.mediatraffic.de/countdown2000.htm
Chimera Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 because it is a song of life? just kidding...I rarely play it
MLVCPR Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 It wasn't released as a single in the US commercially. It was a radio hit because it was so huge everywhere else.
Moka Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 I was 10 and I still remember this song being played on radio
xtaticboy82 Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 Beautiful Stranger and American Pie were a good transition from Ray Of Light to Music creatively, critically and commercially speaking.
Carta Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 It became her first Australian #1 single since "Vogue/Keep It Together". It was MASSIVE worldwide, although "Music" made it look like an "also ran" just a few months later. It would easily have been a Top 10 hit in the US if it had been released as a physical single over there (rather than just an airplay single).
Barbie Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Because it's AMAZING. It's a shame how it's been neglected as far as compilation releases. Should have been on Celebration.
frzndrwnwrld Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 I guess it wasn't on Celebration because it's still "punished."
spotlight Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 the song is great but im a bigger fan of the original. im not calling it REDUCTIVE though so please don't attack me
Ciccone's Cheeks Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Great question...NO idea how or why it was so huge internationally lol. Its absolutely one of her most random and forgotten w.w. #1s when she had WAY, way better more quality, iconic songs that didn't do as well :# Def one of her few songs (forget major hits w.w.) that I never think about or listen to! lol. I think it was all timing and at another major M zenith/ peak (post ROL and pre Music).
tuckeye Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 because rupert everett sang backing vocals on it. he said he was the one who 'convinced' her to record it because he knew it would be a worldwide smash.
Barbie Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 American Pie is one of her best songs ever. The blasphemy in here is just.....
spotlight Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 because rupert everett sang backing vocals on it. he said he was the one who 'convinced' her to record it because he knew it would be a worldwide smash. Madonna was riddding on rupert's coattails. NOT
spotlight Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 well if thw nwxt best thing couldnt be a box office hit at least its theme song was
5iVe Elements Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 It was a hit in Asia. It was #1. It was everywhere. And her buttcrack in the video!
rocknrolla Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 I really like it, had no idea it was so big world wide
5iVe Elements Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 My first exposure to the song was her version. I didn't know it was a cover Until I heard the long original. I heard the other verses and I was like WTF
rocknrolla Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Really, I'm surprised it is so disliked by fans. It seems tailor made for her: lyrics about dancing, religion, love.
Messiahxxx Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 It's not one of my faves but i really like it! I don't understand why M punished it
Phineaspoe Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 It became a hit because I believe the world doesn't know the original exist. I'm from Argentina – the first time I ever heard this song was her version. Remember also it was a different time (I know, just 15 years ago...). So it wasn't as easy to just google the song and learn everything about it. I'm pretty sure I didn't even find out this was a cover until some time later. The melody is catchy as hell (duh), the production is pleasant... It was also a time when Madonna had a string of smashes, particularly globally.
promise to try Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 BS,cuidado con my corazon and american pie should have been top ten songs in the US.her voice in AP sounds really sweet and beautiful, and somebody has said,I also didn't know tge original so I don't miss any verse.I only knew one crappy version that wasa hit in spain during the 90s,and madonna's was way better
horn Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Because the original version is a borefest. M made it short and sweet.
GOD Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Madonna's version was the best that song could ever be. Shame for the lost of opportunities to songs like BS that did not get a single release (only Promo) in US. It would have been a top 5 for sure.

The majority of people thought it was a new Madonna's song and never heard of the original
Kilt Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Just curious 'coz it only went at number 28 on BIllboard Hot 100. In the US it was sent only to Radio and Clubs. There was no cd single or cd-maxi released.
MadCrazy Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 It was one of her biggest global hits that shockingly flopped in the US. I guess the original was such a cult classic for many Americans and radio stations there opted not to play it due to low callout rating..
