Why would you hate how radio influences the chart? It's been part of the Hot 100 since its inception in 1958. Is that because, then, a certain track would be No. 1 without airplay in the mix? Come on now. :)

the problem with radio today vs. radio 20+ years ago is that radio is so generic and stale and always late to the party. They milk songs for months when in the past it was weeks and most of the time radio doesn't even catch on to a song until after it peaked on iTunes (Womanizer, Viva La Vida, etc). It's a joke that TI is dominating the charts when he's not dominating iTunes just because US radio refuses to get off its rap kick, even tho you'd think by now they'd realizing forcing that shit down our throats is a huge reason why sales are in the toilet.

SWIFT ON TOP, BUT HERE COMES COLE

Country Phenom Will Top Chart, as Keyshia Cole, Jamie Foxx, Fall Out Boy, Anthony Hamilton Debut

December 17, 2008

The final home stretch before Santa comes to town is in full swing.

Taylor Swift’s Big Machine album Fearless is proving to be the holidays’ big winner, on track to log another week at #1, with a total pegged at between 330-350k.

With MSNBC reporting that Wal-Mart is generating more sales this Q4 than Target, JC Penney and Sears combined, that could bode well for Swift’s continued success through the end of the year.

As for the last batch of major debuts of 2008, Geffen diva Keyshia Cole’s A Different Me looks to be the biggest, with a projected first-week total of 275-300k, good enough for a #2 bow.

J/RMG actor-turned-R&B crooner Jamie Foxx’s Intuition should have a high debut, possibly even #3, with estimates in the 210-230k range.

Island/IDJ emo-rockers Fall Out Boy’s delayed Folie a Deux is up next at 125-135k, with Amazon launching a $3.99 MP3 Deal of the Day yesterday and today that should boost sales figures.

Grammy-nominated LaFace/ZLG soul man Anthony Hamilton is looking at 120-130k for his new album, The Point of it All.

Atlantic rapper Plies, an alum of the Florida-based Slip N’ Slide label, is on target for 95-105k for his new album, DA REAList.

DGC/Interscope Oklahoma rockers All-American Rejects are trending at 60-65k for their apocalyptic-sounding third album, When the World Comes Down.

Interscope kid rapper Soulja BoyTell'Em returns with his sophomore album after a successful debut and is eyeing 30-35k in first-week sales.

The market was up 14% vs. last week, down 28% vs. same week last year and still down 14% year to date.

Mariah is the smartest! She's waiting for 2 months to release her song on i-tunes after the radio release! :dramatic:

We all want "certain" tracks to go #1 sometimes... something like 4 Minutes or Circus that were DENIED from #1.

It did on the sales chart. #3 Hot 100.

you forget to add that 4 Minutes was released one week after the radio release. Not 2 months like another song that week that hit no1 on the hot100.. Had it been released just one week later(2 weeks after the radio release) it would have hit no1.

that must be the strangest top ten of the history, with three artists with two songs on it!!!

I´m happy to see that beyoncé is back on top, that Pink´s Sober is starting to work, and that Usher finally is having another song with a little bit of success again.Anf AT LASt is on the R%B chart: is it one of beyonce´s next two singles?

Usher's a current example of someone radio is obsessed with and consumers are over. #45 on the hot 100 and #194 on iTunes? Let him go radio, he sucks

It's 4 artists now, now Kanye has 2 songs in the top 10 as well. ;)

I guess it's really a record?

YOUR WEAKEND-BEFORE-XMAS TOP 10 CHART PREVIEW: Next week’s album chart may look something like this:

1. Taylor Swift (Big Machine), 340-355k

2. Keyshia Cole (Geffen debut), 300-315k

3. Jamie Foxx (J/RMG debut), 230-245k

4. Britney Spears (Jive/ZLG), 175-190k

4. Beyonce (Music World/Columbia), 175-190k

6. Nickelback (Roadrunner), 165-175k

7. Twilight (Chop Shop/Atlantic), 150-160k

8. AC/DC (Columbia), 140-150k

9. Fall Out Boy (Island/IDJ debut), 130-135k

10. Kanye West (Roc-A-Fella/IDJ), 125-130k

10. Now 29 (UMe), 125-130k

10. David Cook (19/RCA/RMG), 125-130k

10. Anthony Hamilton (LaFace/ZLG debut), 125-130k

Of course, with this being the last weekend before Christmas, these numbers are subject to change. And obviously Britney and Beyonce won’t both be #4, nor will we have four #10s. Ho, ho, ho. (12/19a)

I'd sooner take him over Britney.

I know Britney's not some musical genius, but some guy who samples a YouTube sensation is better (Live Your Life samples that Oooma Oooma song)?

For the last full shopping week before Christmas, this is awful. I can't wait to see the mid-January sales drought. I wonder what the #1 album will be selling then - 40,000 copies?

Billboard Chart Beat Chat:

FOUR DOUBLES

Fred,

Did you notice that eight of the top 10 songs on the Hot 100 chart for the week ending Dec. 27 are from four artists?

Beyonce has two (“Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and “If I Were a Boy”) , T.I. has two (“Live Your Life” and “Whatever You Like”), Britney Spears has two (“Circus” and “Womanizer”) and Kanye West has two (“Heartless” and “Love Lockdown”).

Not sure if this has occurred before, but it seems pretty cool.

Dan Miller

Manchester, Mo.

Dear Dan,

You were one of about a dozen readers who wrote in to point out the four doubles in the top 10, and most wanted to know if this has ever happened before.

Usually that is one of the questions that prompts me to say the only way to be sure would be to manually search through 50 years of Hot 100 charts. And while that’s true, the flurry of e-mails on the topic convinces me that if this had ever happened before, I would have heard from at least a dozen readers. Then there’s the fact that I don’t ever remember this happening before, at least not in my 16-year tenure writing this column.
