Supernatural
People OBSESSED with her record sales, while sitting at home (alone) are PATHETIC. Madonna is out working her (almost 50 yearold) ass off in a studio somewhere, creating another artisticly brilliant stage show, that will make her more money than she can count, while breaking her own record. Unless you're getting a cut of her album sales, I see no reaon for the looney as hell chart obsession here. Thank you.
dimfanis
um .. noone is obsessed with anything. This is a chart forum. If you don't want to read about record sales and chart postions go to other forums to discuss whether Madonna will make millions from her new tour or not, since this is what you seem to care more about. Here, we're talking about her music and if it reaches broad audiences or not. Edited July 9, 2008 by dimfanis
Guest nothingfails0603
well, the only thing that I dislike about her lack of promoting her albums is that she is so close to beating Barbra's record in the US, and not just that, she and Mariah have been neck and neck for the past few years. It's one thing if she was so ahead of the pack that it no longer matters, but it's almost like she's conceding and being "here Mariah, the record is yours while I'll make the money off touring" instead of putting more effort into her statistic as #2 female inching her way to Barbra's US record. air1975
She has to keep promoting her music, or she will become obsolete culturally. If she doesn't promote her singles with videos, radio-call ins, TV shows then radio won't play her. Simple as that. With dwindling radio play, she will not reach out to younger people, a broader crowd and to more casual fans. Her fanbase will then just become older and older in age, which will make radio play her even less (as radio is already targeted towards the youngsters). Lack of radio play will result in Madonna becoming an "album artist" - someone who sells albums to only the hardcore fan base and nobody else. When that happens, expect each album to sell only about 300-400,000 in the US.

Thanks for pointing that out. I never understand why anyone comes in here to remind people interested in charts that "only the music matters not the numbers" or "who cares how much she sells." Those are the people that should never be in here. Some people take a genuine interest in statistics and the business side of Madonna - what is wrong with that? She is multi-dimensional after all. I agree. this is a chart thread after all. I am interested in stats, it is fun to follow, although not so obsessed as to call radio stations outside my city/country as some. I am not going to work for Madonna, the loons can do that. However, I prefer a good album to a best selling album, pity that HC (in my opinion) is neither
franxisco66
Are you for real? Who the hell are you to call Madonna pathetic? Madonna is putting together a tour to please her fans, rehearsing GOD knows how many hours a day. Pathetic is YOU, feeling all high & mighty sitting there behind your computer plugged into the wall judging someone who will NEVER be forgotten. You on the other hand? You're a NOBODY. Pathetic indeed. I think she does it more to earn money not to please her fans though. She used to promote albums when albums used to sell, things have changed now. Tours is what makes money these days, so there isn't point in spending time shooting quality videos or promoting singles. Why people cant see something so obvious? She is called Material girl for a reason after all.

But at the same time, I do not want her turning into an oldies relic like The Rolling Stones who makes hundreds of millions each tour, but rely on the same 60's and 70's classics that aren't getting any fresher. I mean, Madonna has enough 80's and 90's hits that she never has to record again and still tour over and over for those old classics, but I'd rather Madonna stay present/future-minded because I think relying solely on the past becomes really boring. This very thing has completely taken Michael Jackson out of the running in terms of being a relevant artist, because he keeps putting out Greatest Hits and reissues of Thriller instead of making new music

The fact that 4 Minutes was #3 meant it had the sorta mass appeal, but it wouldn't work 10/10 times. There's a limit how mass she can get. She's sorta just fanbase artist in the US now
fak
Madonna will have to start making good quality pop music a la Ray of Light - something that appeals to adults and young people. Her HC album sales are lower than normal - whoknows what the next album will sell? i can understand her not wanting to put toomuch effort into promoting her releases but then less people are likely to buy the album and then less people are likely to attend her tours. Is there a future for a woman who will be in her 50's soon making poppy records like Hard Candy or will people see it as a bit embarrassing? Most kinds will probably notbe able to connect with her I am no fan of HC but i do wish it would do better sales wise than it is doing. I hope it goes platinum - everyone should have a benchmark and Madonna's should not be around 600,000. fair enough AL sold 670,000 but that was a risk. HC is playng it safe. With each album she reaches a new low in the USA - a song form LAP misisng the top 10, a song form the follow-up barely scraping the top 40, 2 songs form the follow up barely scraping the top 50, then an oscure ballady phase and a no78, then a no 93 peak from a ROL final single, Music's releases were all top 25 but thats because only 3 singles were released, then her first uncharted song from the AL album, followed up by unchartings songs from COADF.....although COADF psitons and sales have increased from AL.......HC singles positions are already better than COADF but still the album maybe be lucky to sell half of it. HC singles all have a chance tp reach top 100 - radio might not play her but digisales are on her side this time.

I agree with most of the things you said but not that she reaches a new low with every album. She was always able to recover from "failures" and move on to different things and make an impact when the Billboard statistics were against her. With quality music, better videos and promotion, digital sales, etc. she should be able to sell at least a million from each record and have her songs go Top 40. I dont think anyone is expecting her to play the game of AIs + sales combination to secure a position in the top-10 until she's 100 years old but yes, we expect from her to make good music and promote it. She said with the Live Nation deal she's looking for innovative ways to distribute her music. Well, I'm looking forward to it because right now she seems she's doing whatever is possible for her music to go nowhere.

thebigham
Billboard.com: Lil Wayne Back On Top Of The Billboard 200 July 09, 2008 , 10:55 AM ET by Katie Hasty, N.Y. Despite a 25% drop in sales, Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" returns to the top of The Billboard 200 this week. The Cash Money/Universal album moved 156,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and has now sold 1.68 million in four weeks of release. Coldplay's "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" (Capitol) -- which crowned the chart for the last two weeks -- drops down to No. 2, with 149,000 and a 40% decrease in sales. The Jonas Brothers-led soundtrack to Disney's "Camp Rock" stays at No. 3 for a third week straight with 116,000 (-32%). G-Unit's sophomore set, "T.O.S. (Terminate on Sight)" (G-Unit/Interscope) debuts at No. 4 with 102,000. The crew's 2003's debut album, "Beg For Mercy," started at No. 1 with 377,000. John Mayer's "Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live in Los Angeles" debuts this week at No. 5 with 75,000. It's the third live offering from the songwriter, on the heels of 2005's "Try! Live in Concert" and 2003's "Any Given Thursday." The former debuted and peaked at No. 34 with 50,000, while "Thursday" debuted at No. 17 with 64,000. The multi-label hits compilation "Now 28" holds tight at No. 6 with 59,000 (-10%), as Kid Rock's "Rock N Roll Jesus" (Top Dog/Atlantic) re-enters the top 10 12-7 with a 27% boost in sales to 45,000. Much of that album's charge as of late has been powered by the single "All Summer Long," which rises 18-13 on the Hot AC/Adult Top 40 chart, 53-44 on Hot Country Songs and 21-17 on the CHR/Top 40 chart. Usher's LaFace/Zomba set "Here I Stand" descends 7-8 with a 20% sales decrease to 41,000. Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad" (SRP/Def Jam) climbs a slot 10-9 with 40,000 (-14%). That album flip-flops with Disturbed's Warner Bros. album "Indestructible," which falls 9-10 with 37,000 (-25%). Rapper Tech N9ne scores his highest charting album and best sales week ever as "Killer" (Strange Music/Fontana) debuts at No. 12 with 36,000. The Kansas City native has been charting since 2001; his previous high came with the No. 49 debut and peak of 2007's "Misery Loves Kompany." Rock outfit Alkaline Trio's "Agony & Irony" (Epic) bows right behind at No. 13 with only a couple dozen fewer sales at 36,000. This is also the Chicago group's best sales and charting week ever. Other debuts this week include My Chemical Romance's live set "The Black Parade is Dead!" (Reprise, No. 22, 23,000), "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens' "Identified" (Hollywood, No. 23, 22,000), Relient K's "The Bird and the Bee Sides" (Gotee, No. 25, 20,000), Los Lonely Boys' "Forgiven" (Epic, No. 26, 19,000) and Jim Jones & Byrd Gang's "M.O.B.: The Album" (Asylum, No. 29, 17,000). At 7.56 million units, sales this week are down 1.4% from last week's sum and off 13.4% from the same week last year.

bagol
Madonna will have to start making good quality pop music a la Ray of Light - something that appeals to adults and young people. I agree. It's not only about promotion. Good albums almost always sell well.
afrolito
I agree. It's not only about promotion. Good albums almost always sell well. Bullshit. American Life was a GREAT record, and we all know how well that was received. I also happen to think HC is a pretty good record in it's own right. The quality of a music has little to nothing to do with sales. If it did, the current top 10 would look a lot different. The success of a record has more to do with timing, promotion, and luck, than anything else.
scrapple
i love how people state as fact that HC isnt a quality album simply because they dont like it.

HolidayGuy
You can't go by digital sales rankings or online sales rankings. HC obviously didn't have an increase this week.
