Mariah Set To Leave Island Def Jam?

mariah_carey_-_bye_bye.gif

As a result of the lackluster reception of ‘Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel’, and Mariah Carey’s indignation with the handling of the record, sources have informed us that the songbird may just be ready to take flight to a new label. There is reliable word that Carey has been at logger-heads with label-head LA Reid for several months now.

The 39-year old diva has been signed to the Island Def Jam Music Group since 2002. The terms of the singer’s deal entail a minimum of 3 albums for the grand total of 22.5 million dollars, with her being named a joint partner with the Universal Music Group. Carey’s first LP released under the agreement was 2002’s ‘Charmbracelet’ which was followed by the 6x platinum ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’, ‘E=MC²’ and ‘Memoirs…‘, which was released on September 29th 2009.

If Carey decides to leave IDJ, we will not be shocked. The promotional efforts behind ‘Memoirs…’ reflect less than half of the energy that the label placed into the ‘Emancipation’ project. Has anyone else noticed that she has barely taken any new promotional pictures for this record with the exception of her single covers and the album booklet? Add that to Carey’s criticism’s of ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ being chosen as a single in place of ‘H.A.T.E.U.’, and it’s easy to understand why she might be preparing to ditch the label.

let's see, mariah has already fucked up 3 of the big 4 record companies, columbia under sony bmg for her first 11 years, virgin under emi for a year, currently island def jam under universal. she's unhappy with every company she's in and this shows that it's probably her working attitude that sucks. so if she's on to the last of the big 4, warner music, then i wish her good luck because she would probably be kicked out in no time. but then again who would want to pay to get a flopping artist like her who makes million dollar demands everyday. time to go back to her looney bin or set up her own lamb records and sell albums that only her lambs would buy.

but then again she should struggle to stay on island def jam because it's a much more honest record label. unlike sony bmg, they don't overship albums and claim that she has sold over 200 million records. island def jam knows that she has only sold 175 million records, so kudos for them.

^ The moment I've been waiting for...oh where will you go next, Mariah?

While I am sure she and Roger Friedman will spin whatever crappy deal she gets into some kind of "$100 million partnership" PR nonsense, Mariah's going to find a cold reception outside of Def Jam's door. The only mega-deals being signed anymore are for 360's and she isn't a touring force to command big money. Also, she put most all her chips in the U.S. market so she has no European fan base (and a limited Asian one) to fall back on.

I predict a full-on merchandising onslaught. She'll pimp her name to dime store lip gloss, cheap clothing at SEARS, and pretty much any other mass retailer that she can con into carrying her new albums. This will be followed by game show appearances and probably a reality TV show (which will be about 10 years too late).

This oughta be good...

Yeah, only up and coming hot artists are given "regular" contracts these days. But I guess Mariah will be signed somewhere if she wants to, after all Janet just got a new deal and she's been doing a lot worse than Mariah after 2001.

But I can see Mariah not signing a deal anytime soon and taking a break for a year or two to hide the fact that labels are not rushing to get her. She might only want to make movies from now on and get pregnant or something. She never really had passion about her music, usually called it her job and was too caught up thanking the lambs for giving her chart positions. It's not like she had the stage to go back to.

I always thought a Vegas residency would be the way for her but I guess her recent casino shows didn't do well enough for that...

"18 US number 1 singles (more than half... nobody remembers) !!!

:nocomment:

yeah, think that's one of the issues with her. And to think about other singles from her who haven't reached number one it's pretty hard, Make it happen, Anytime you nened a friend...ehh....what else?. And no need to bring her outside the US statistics in terms of nuber 1's although she did sold around 80 million albums outside the US. Also as far as i know she has sold around 145 million albums thus far, not 175, so it's still an inflated number. It's understood that they use some facts to promote her, like the 18 number 1's ,but they should point those are US figures. Anyway, people tend to make funny points when trying to enhance an artist. Just read in Billboard how in order to make Taylor Swift look some kind of Chart leader they say "oh she's got more top 40 hot 100 than any other female artist.... since she became a star" :lmao:

And i always read also here how Madonna has sold over 200 albums, but the most accurate sites about album sales say she's sold around 185 million. I think the most accurate would be to say she's sold nearly 300 million albums and singles combined....if she hasn't reached that number just yet.

Mimi & her PR team may fool the world claiming she's the most successful, but not LA Reid.

I believe IDJ just managed to get back what they had paid her to sign on the label (all thanks to TEOM), therefore LA Reid is not willing to pay anything more than 20%. Consider 1 successful album VS 3 flops + 1 flopped tour, they would rather invest $$$ on other younger artist than 40yo Mimi.

If Mimi leaves IDJ, I guess the happiest person in this world would be those folks in art direction department,

23. (NEW) Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (26.5k)

 so much for the X Factor hype..

She made the right choice.

Or else MOAIA would've sold much lesser if w/o X factor performance.

Mimi needs to court the gays more like Whitney did with her "My Love Is Your Love" album and focus on dance remixes; I think that seriously helped Whitney stave off a total career collapse. I actually have liked some of Mariah's recent tracks like "Touch My Body", "I Stay In Love" and "Obsessed" in remix form.

I remember an MTV News report where Whitney did a concert for the gays and sung her recent MLIYL hits in their dance mix form.

Yes. She performed at New York Gay Pride in 1999 (The Chelsea Pier Dance I think). With the remixes from that album combined with new remixes done for some of her past hits for her Greatest Hits collection the following year and teaming up with up-and-coming club diva Deborah Cox she totally had the gays in her pocket. I recall hearing the remixed versions of the YLIMY tracks on my local radio stations as well.

I agree. Remix versions of her recent songs are much better than the originals, Obsessed and Touch My Body are actually decent as dance versions IMO.

that whole MLIYL era for Whitney was as epic and gaylicious as you could get for Whitney. I remember ALL the singles (both the remixes and single versions) from that album - Heartbreak Hotel, MLIYL, ILFTB, INABIO etc..getting the living plastic squeezed out of all those tracks in every gay bar and club.

As for Mimi, she reeeally just needs to let the ocean pull her out where she belongs- for good! Any remix album or what not is beyond blatant - she's trying to get any kind of quick high chart position in the cheapest most transparent way to make up for the holy disaster known MOIA.

These aging divas just need to hang it up. Whitney's come back has been a huge none event. Outside of the U.S there's been nothing but a whisper about her. Mariah is the most tired act atm and can't seem to stop releasing album after album even though they aren't selling as much as she'd like them too. It seems like she keeps pumping them out to until she hits it big again.

The only person who seems to be doing something mildly successful is Leona Lewis, i assume mainly because she's young.

Even Xtina isn't releasing a big diva album next up, she's going opposite.

Divas are very 1995. It's over.

mimi's so only gonna sell 750k for her moaia, she has got to re-invent herself and stop her "i'm a diva so worship me" attitude. i'm so tired of listening to her sing r&b for 20 years. speaking of x factor, is madonna really going to appear on that tv show too? i heard it a few months ago but then till now, even when the show is near the end, there has been no date released to us for her appearance. so does anyone know?
