4 Minutes USA Airplay: Mediabase (part 2)

Why is RHYTHMIC so lukewarm to the song though? Isnt that supposed to be Madonna's playground? Or are they like AC stations, where they jump on a song after its been out awhile?

we have to thank Z100 for the AudImp gains... they made it their #4 song now... probably because of the concert tickets contest...

Z100's Top 3 has more than 90+ spins each... right now MADONNA has 67 spins... I hope KIIS have some tickets for free as well...

Thanks Z100 , this not happen with kiis fm , Touch my body is nr 1 on their playlist with 6M in Ai and Bye Bye is around 1.6M , Madonna is only around 2.5M AI.

i wonder y kiis is so inlove with mariah?..and i think that the reason y rhytmic is not fully supportive of 4m is beacause we always talk only bout pop charts...so i guess we have been a little complacent about rhytmic stations...i think that we have to relay the messgae to keep requesting it on rhytmic stations, coz they got a big audience...

Do you think that stations in smaller markets look at what z100 is playing? I remember z100 supported first songs like Don't stop the music, U+Ur Hand. I mean they put them top5 on their playlist while the majority of the stations hadn't touched the songs.. Now 4 Minutes is no4. In one day it jumped 4-5 positions due to the competition with the tickets I guess!

No. 3 - Jordin (+4.5 million) = 128M

No. 4 - Ray J (+2.8 million) = 126M

No. 5 - Lil Wayne (+5.4 million) = 105M??

No. 8 - Leona (+4.4 million) = 95M??

4M AI suddenly 'bursts' to 45.5M!!! nice!!! that could possibly end to 48M by Tuesday and thats a #1 potential (along with the 200k plus sales) for 4Minutes!!! is #1 now a possibility???!!!

No. Not a #1 possibility this week.

Airplay does not weigh as much as you guys seem to think. 1M aud impressions = 1000 sales. Unless 4M starts gaining 20M impressions a week, it's not really going to make much difference in its position. It's all about sales. Sales need to climb a lot with other songs dropping in order for #1 to be a possibility, and the week of the album release is the likeliest time for that.

130M and 46M, this gasp is absurd and discredits Airplay. The hot 100 audience souhld be published on Radios&Records's intranet only. And should be called the weekly Hot 100 radio programmers Rot 100, R for Radio. it's not hot.

Bad Robot, Airplay seems to weigh much. 150 M AI = 150 points. 150.000 sales = 150 points. Airplay is 50% of the total, no? so it's possible, it's just a theory but, a song selling 0 units with 120M AI sales has a chance to be a Top 10, but a song with no airplay and 40.000 sales can only hope to break top 40. doesn't seem fair. when you buy a song you make a choice, you don't when you're listening a song on radio (request is a joke). so sales should weigh much more in the calcul.

Airplay does not equal 50% of the total.

It equals somewhere between 40-45% probably. Sales make up about 50-55%. Streaming makes up the rest.

Airplay has a role clearly but in the case of 4M, it could lose 10M audience impressions in one week and it would only take a 10k gain in sales to offset that.

The song is getting about 75-80% of its points from sales, and it will probably stay that way. There's little point in focusing on airplay and requests really. There is NOTHING we can do as individuals regarding that.

If you want to make a difference, buy all the remixes separately. That'll take about 2 minutes and maybe $10, and it will do about 1000000x more than all the requesting and streaming people are trying.

yes people, this is the way to go... you can request your lungs out at stations but in the end it's stil all up to the radio programmers

good luck in convincing them to play 4 M more...

This shows how US Radio doesn't represent the common tastes and how payola counts...

I really don't think that payola is causing this. Really. If anyone has the promotional budget to buy-off radio, it's Madonna and Warner Bros.

There are certain realities at play here - Madonna has been a major superstar for over 20 years (fatigue element), she's almost 50 (age element) and she's a white pop star (race and style elements). I also think a lot of Urban radio programmers see her as part of the "old establishment" and they want to play young, hip acts who their audience identifies with. It's only going to get harder for her as the years pass.

I think she's actually doing fantastic at radio. The song has been charting half as long as the other shit in the Top 10 and it made it to the Top 5 about 3x faster.

C'mon, the age is just an excuse. Does it really make difference for you who sings a nice song? Do you change radio station if you realize that the singer doesn't have tits and hips on the cover? Please let's be honest, it's clear that US Radio is just "business".

A healthy amount of Madonna’s struggle at radio undoubtedly is age, but most of it IMO is more style, perception, and Madonna herself long falling out of sorts with what is contemporary to the average American radio listener/music buyer. She stayed in euro-dance/electro-pop mode too long, to the point where it made her music seem increasing out of sorts with American tastes and her too eccentric and “niche” a personality for US radio to embrace.

I remember back when she was beginning her Drowned World Tour; a local radio station was discussing her coming to town, and the deejay cynically remarked about how she’s “gone techno.” This is most likely the general outlook that many deejays and radio station managers have of her and her music to the point where they don’t think she—stylistically—will fit in with their listener demographic, and so they don’t bother to enthusiastically support it, or at all.

For a good while she managed to defy stylistic status quo and still have considerable success with the atypical Ray of Light/Music albums, and the “Beautiful Stranger” and “Die Another Day” singles, but that could only last for so long. And in the meantime, I think Madonna became conceited about what she could get away with because of those successes…and because she was Madonna. Now, even though it seems with this new album that she’s finally returning to the “US top 40” sounding Madonna that she was up until about 1997 (although “Give it 2 Me” may seemingly contradict that), the shadow of her last ten years still colors the general perception of her music…therefore keeping her underdog potential high.

IMO, Hard Candy is the album Madonna should have made after Music. I also think that with this album, she should promote (in the US) like crazy. I get the feeling that she and WB thought that, in addition to things like Sunsilks ads/radio interviews, 4M would practically sell itself—with Madonna, JT, and Timbaland all on one track—and it did, but I imagine that if Madonna (and the two Tim’s) had been everywhere promoting it, it would have only helped at radio, sales…and perhaps chart positions.
