MADONNA RUMORED TO BE PLAYING AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CONCERT IN BROOKLYN

Earlier this week it was announced that the massive Amnesty International concert at Barclays Center on February 5th will feature two members of Pussy Riot, who were just released from Russian prison camps last month. The concert is a return to the Amnesty concerts of the 1980s and ’90s (they stopped in 1998), and in that spirit some legendary talent has been expected to return with it—we now have it on good authority that Madonna has been confirmed to play at the show.

She also issued this call to action at the time: “I protest the conviction and sentencing of Pussy Riot to a penal colony for two years for a 40 second performance extolling their political opinions. Even if one disagrees with the location or how they chose to express themselves, the sentence is too harsh and in fact is inhumane. I call on all those who love freedom to condemn this unjust punishment. I urge artists around the world to speak up in protest against this travesty. They’ve spent enough time in jail. I call on ALL of Russia to let Pussy Riot go free.”

Organizers have promised big announcements up until the date of the show, so expect more of these surprises in the next week

We're hearing yes. Earlier this month it was announced that weirdos (Flaming Lips), jocks (Imagine Dragons), legends (Ms. Lauryn Hill), and the recently released from prison (Pussy Riot) will take the stage at Barclays Center on Feb. 5th for Amnesty International's Bringing Human Rights Home concert. Then it was announced earlier this week that Pussy Riot would also be on hand. Now we're being told that Madonna will be making an appearance as well, possibly joining Pussy Riot on stage.

Of course, Madonna has long been a supporter of the group, shamelessly exploiting writing "Free Pussy RIot" on her arms and back all during her MDNA tour.

We'll keep you posted if anyone else is added or if this (very likely true) rumor turns out to be just that. Full original press release about the concert and a video of Madonna's impassioned Pussy Riot speech in Moscow after the jump.

Twenty-five years after its initial concert series, which featured U2, Sting, Lou Reed and others, Amnesty International is redeploying the concert-with a digital twist-to bring awareness about human rights to a new generation.

"The fight for global human rights begins at home," said Steven W. Hawkins, Executive Director for Amnesty International USA. "This concert is part of an evolving conversation about human rights that grounds the universal struggle for dignity and freedom in the injustices we see every day in our own backyard in the United States. We're bringing back the concerts to show a new generation of activists how to stand up for justice at home and abroad-whether it is fighting for the right to voice dissent peacefully on social networks or in the streets, protecting the rights of women and girls, or standing in solidarity with individuals persecuted for who they are or what they believe."

"Amnesty's past concerts have featured some of the greatest artists of our generation and have been catalysts for real, measurable change," said Dan Reynolds, lead singer of Grammy Award-nominated rock band Imagine Dragons. "It's an honor to perform as part of this event and continue the cause of championing human rights around the world."

Between 1986 and 1998, Amnesty International held 28 concerts around the world with over 1.25 million attendees. The most high-profile component of the concert series was the six-week, five-continent, 20-concert "Human Rights Now!" world tour in 1988 - headlined by Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Tracy Chapman and Youssou N'Dour. Those concerts directly helped triple the movement's worldwide membership and mobilize a generation of human rights activists.

The Bringing Human Rights Home concert is being produced by CBGB Productions, the live event and music production affiliate of CBGB & OMFUG.

Why do they always have to be so goddamn negative about every good thing she does?

ugh i know. i once read an article in a stupid magazine waiting at the office and they were going on about how madonna "uses" pussy riot for attention while celebs who tweeted about pussy riot one time were "really" sincere. as if. madonna talked about pussy riot on almost all her shows. ugh I hate the media so much.

Which is hilarious Nikki since most people in the world have no damn clue who Pussy Riot is, so why would Madonna the Most Famous Woman in the World, be exploiting THEM for publicity?

Also on what planet is "one album wonder" Lauryn Hill a legend?

Show some respect! She was in jail. In some circles that gives you a lot of credibility. And isn't she a total bitch? Allegedly.

She's also said racist things against whites and wrote a very homophobic song

If that makes you a "legend" than Justin Beiber is one too.

yep! she even spoke out where it mattered and not just in the US like so many others do, behind their computers.

So far I've seen a mix of both. I don't even get that reasoning, because these types of events takes a while to plan, so they have probably negotiating this for a while and we are getting the news just now.
