^Exactly!!!! But that mentality has to change! Its time to start, this is a different time than the past. She needs to step up her game.

Why does it have to change now? This is her last album under a regular label, and as others said, she doesn't need to care about CD sales because compared to her huge tour grosses, those sales are irrelevant. It's more important to worry about if we're gonna get a regular Madonna CD-album for the first LN album or not, because by 2011, these sales will be even more irrelevant.

She doesn't care about album sales. I think that's obvious, and has been for some time, probably since before "Music" (remember WIFLFAG was single #3, and that effectively killed the album).

Well, if she didn't care about album sales then why the abrupt shift from her Mirwais-acoustic techno of American Life (which bombed) to the ultra-glossy ABBA-infected Confessions? Why team up with Timberlake and Timbaland - arguably the best selling popsmiths of the moment? Why admit crying with happiness when your album hits #1 in over 20 countries?

I think she cares about album sales, but not so much as to bury herself in a promo schedule like Mariah Carey's. Although part of me wishes she would, she does have three kids too.

I think it has to do more with staying relevant, being popular and being played on radio. Of course sales matter, but that's more for her record label, she's probably not allowed to record a totally un-commercial album. But I doubt Madonna personally cares if Hard Candy is 1x or 2x Platinum in the USA. She's more interested in touring and she knows many people will go and see her, so her latest music will be heard that way.

Lil Wayne seems to be coming up short of the one million.

To be honest, I am surprised he is doing so well while Alanis is doing so badly. I do not know one person who likes Lil Wayne more than Alanis. Her album was the "major release" of the week to me, not his crap.

yay!!!! 70k is MUCH better than 45-50k. Granted, it's sad that Alanis' days of #1 debuts are behind her, but 70k is closer to Sheryl Crow's last album than Tori/Bjork.

Why did HC have such a collapse this week?

Why did HC have such a collapse this week?

Good question, especially with the LP set released (good for a few thousand units).

Well, she definitely didn't get the Father's Day bump that most albums received.

the success of the new Journey album surprises me

I know they are one of the most beloved bands of the 1980's and that Greatest Hits album continues to sell in major quantities. But, I remember the albums they released with the lead singer who replaced Steve Perry (who was the voice of Journey as far as most people are concerned) were outright bombs that didn't even make the top 40. Yet this album with another new lead singer is selling very well and had one of the smallest second week drops on record in the past year?

It's a bargain. 2 CDs + 1 DVD for something like $15. One of the CDs is of greatest hits, albeit with the new singer (who has an amazingly identical voice to Steve Perry's).

I'm glad to see any 80s artist/band make a comeback. I have a soft spot for everything 80s. ;)

These Wal-Mart deals, for the artists, can't be beat. Rather than making royalties, the artist gets a flat fee for a certain amount of pressed units. Wal-Mart takes the risk.

Maybe the album will see a small bump from Get Smart which comes out this weekend. Isn't "4 Minutes" featured in the film? I realize that is probably wishful thinking.

its going to be VERY close to AL #s . It *all* come down to IF GI2M has any impact. If it does, HC clearly will blow AL US#s aside. If not than :( ouch!

She didn't work with US top hit makers on American Life, though. Hard Candy's obligation is to perform better. It has chart-wise but not sales-wise.

Yet it spawned her soon-to-be best selling US single! That's pretty much enough for those so called "obligations". By the way, shouldn't you be more worried about Mariah, who needs to do 6 million again, because she worked with the same people, so it would be her obligation to at least match that, no? :dramatic:

I was thinking Hard Candy would probably be poison for fathers day shopping.

I think if anything 4 Minutes has run its course. I heard it like CRAZY on the radio for weeks on end and now I hear it every so often. Like I said. Its all up to GI2M to give the album a boost again.

On a sidenote, if Kid Rocks album can fly back up the charts again like it seems to be doing, anyones album can cause its been out for awhile now. I guess his latest single (the one that sounds like Sweet Home Alabama) is really hitting a nerve.
