Skin
24. Ray of Light: 38 (+11)- .198m My only hope is that when HotAC and AC stations start to faze out spinning songs from the 80s and focus more on the 90s is that they see that this was a groundbreaking song from that decade and it starts to get the recurrent spins that it deserves. Guest boytoyville
I really am suprised that Rain doesn't get more recurrent aiplay. It's like it was made for AC. Wierd. Oh well, still one of my most cherished tracks.
HolidayGuy
More? Don't ya mean any? It didn't even register a single spin in that report! I think the Erotica association hurt "Rain" as far as recurrent airplay goes. Then again, you have something like "Frozen," which was an even bigger hit than 'Rain" and from an acclaimed album, and it barely gets any recurrent play, as well. Guest nothingfails0603
I am surprised Like A Virgin is usually only in the 20's with her catalog tracks considering it's not just one of her most iconic songs, but one of the most iconic and defining songs of the 1980's as a whole

And generally what was its peak on millions of impressions??! It's weird I too have always wondered about this. "Frozen" peaked at # 2 in March 21, 1998. Yet, that same week, Frozen was #7 in AIRPLAY and #10 in SALES. I have never understood that.
HolidayGuy
There is a "Frozen" edit, of course. Frozen peaked at No. 4 at top 40 mainstream, No. 15 Rhythmic Top 40, No. 8 AC and No. 9 Hot AC (the last 2 positons might be reversed). Its audience peak probably was around 60 million. Skin, in the latest 7-day report, Angel has 13 spins- 10 at Hot AC and 3 at AC. it may have a few rhythmic AC spins (WKTU is that format), but less than 30 (since it doesn't show up in the Rhythmic AC Golds list). The Rhythmic format was always dominated by Urban sounds and artists? Or it was influenced by the POP top40?
HolidayGuy
The rhythmic chart started as Top 40/Rhythm-Crossover. It was re-titled Rhythmic Top 40 in 1998. Teen-pop acts would appear regularly on the chart, until that fad grew stale. It's just since 2003 or so that rhythmic rop 40 has begun to have more in common with urban playlists- the occasional pop track fares decently ("Toxic" made it to No. 16, for example; and "Bleeding Love" fared OK)- but for the most part, non-urban tracks struggle at rhythmic these days. Holidayguy can I ask you something? Do you think that the urban sound became very radio friendly in the US just because the singles sales collapsed? I mean the sales benefit almost always white artists and more POP sounds. Since the single sales has died and the hot100 has been dominated by urban artists do you think that this fact influenced the radio(Especially the top40 and Rhythmic formats)? I mean, looking at a HOT100 full of black artists in the top10 makes you believe that that's what people want to hear. Now that we have a rebirth on sales due to the digital explosion do you think that is going to influence the radio? I guess it's already happening!? The top40 format has become POP enough again. What do you think?

Guest Danny86
HG, any updates from the past 2 weeks? I was wondering if "Human Nature" ever gets any spins... Somebody in the tour forum made a comment that "Dress You Up" is barely played on US radio. Well you can see that's not true, and the title track of Ray Of Light is the only song that's still played from that album, so maybe that justifies why Madonna is overperforming it? HolidayGuy
As you can see via a lot of these updates, HN doesn't get played. I'll try to do an update next week.
Guest Danny86
Yes but I hoped it gets a few plays then and now. I understand that "Bedtime Story" never gets played though, but "Human Nature" shouldn't be having the same fate...

iasonas
HolidayGuy can you give us information about You'll see's airplay in the US? Is it true that it peaked at no1 in the hot100 airplay? The hot100 airplay before 1998 was based on everything except for country and Urban formats?

The hot100 airplay before 1998 was based on everything except for country and Urban formats? I'm pretty sure You'll See peaked at #10 on the airplay list. Guest Danny86
"You'll See" indeed peaked at #10 on Hot 100 Airplay, which I always thought was a disappointment, considering how radio-friendly the track is and was promoted as the follow-up to a song that spent 9 weeks at #1 on Airplay. Thanks for the update HG! I'm surprised that there are weeks when "Die Another Day" gets no spins at all!
Skin
I wonder if when radio formats change when this decade is over and the 80s songs gets shipped to the oldies stations (how scary) do you think Madonna's 90s songs like Secret, ROL, and Beautiful Stranger will get more play when stations only focus on the 90s and the 00s? It really is sick when you see the low spins for Ray of Light, but if you ask me this song is such a staple of the 90s.
HolidayGuy
Yes, YS peaked at No. 10. It charted at No. 7 Mainstream Top 40, No. 21 Rhythmic Top 40 (I believe), top 10 AC and top 20 Hot AC. YS really wasn't promoted as the follow-up to TAB (as there were 2 singles after TAB). The video, yah, that was looked at as a sequel to TAB. I dunno if stations will foucs moreo n 90s tracks, Skin. "Secret" gets Ok recurrent play, but I agree that ROL should get more. It's definitely one of THE greatest singles of the 90s (but that doesn't always translate to high airplay).
