Madonna's relevancy

It doesn't have to be exciting for fans, but Madonna's wedding is definitely something that is meant to get a bigger splash than her music. And I didn't even talk about "bad press", just stuff happening with her and around her other than the music (but I don't believe they cut her some slack because of TNBT . She was America's sweetheart but because of what Kurt said, they were all about the "she's still around!" vibe and at that time older artists like Santana or Cher were also having successes so it was a different climate that was more supportive of longevity. I just don't believe that Madonna's music was loved by everyone for 3-4 years BECAUSE of its quality, and that would be the basis of "relevancy".

I don't think I was more out of line than any of your posts. And "people" don't have their knives out when they talk to me, certainly not the majority of the board anyway, those who do, not because of my "pompous replies", so your remark feels kinda unnecessary.

Well you were the one who got all sassy when I wrote that first post and you complained that you hated the attitude around here. That's what I meant when i said ppl had their knives out. Because you have a bit of a defensive attitude yourself. You tend to talk to people as if you think they're idiots. I am no angel myself but I've never acted that way in reference to you, so yeah...

OK point taken, but I never said I was an angel either and I guess defensive attitude is a reaction. Maybe I react in the wrong way but I don't think it's me who hinders the attitude change on the board.

That's pretty much how it was at my school too and I'm the same age as you. That's why when people talk about how she was "on the pulse" and sooooo relevant back then with the youth compared to now I just roll my eyes. Most of the people saying that must not be from the US or are 5 years+ younger and rode in on the "comeback" wave of ROL/Music, when she was getting respect finally that she had never gotten before. By that point she had done many things that were worthy of that respect but after 15 years people were finally like "OK. I guess we kinda HAVE to acknowledge her now" kind of thing. It had nothing to do with her being on the "pulse". It was more a testament to the amount of time she'd been "on top" despite having the shit kicked out of her for a good portion of the 90's and to an extent her entire career. I can assure anybody that in the US in the 1990's, Madonna may've had her finger on the "pulse" with the gays but with a lot of the YOUTH she was little more than a washed up whore that could barely sing (my friend used to always say to me "Get OVER her already! She's an 80's girl. Leave her there." back then...he was straight of course). And if we really want to take it back, my older sister has a high school yearbook from 1989 that has a section where the seniors voted on "who's hot/who's not" kind of thing and both MJ and M were "who's not".....so yes even by THAT time she was starting to lose a bit of the "cool" factor with the youth.

I remember this. I remember right after school going across the street to the record shop the day Bedtime Stories came out, and the clerk looked at me and said "you're actually going to get this?". On a daily basis in junior high I heard people telling me how she was a whore who was going to get AIDS and how Paula Abdul had taken her place, etc... I think its easy to look back on those days with rose-colored glasses, but at the time, Madonna was loathed by a lot of people, even moreso than she is now.

Paula. Its a tale as old as time. My dad came across an old recording of my sister and I when we were in the car back when I was 5 years old which would have been around 1987/88. Somehow the topic of singers came up and I said from the backseat "I like Madonna." and my sister being the cunty bitch she was back then shot back with a "Nobody likes Madonna anymore. Everyone likes Tiffany." :lmao: And we see how that turned out. People are always writing Madonna off, and still she remains.

rofl. Who cares about Madonna when Tiffany is a SUPPORTING ACT at Louisville Pride in 2009? That's the true mark of a superstar. I am sure you've taunted your sister with that, and rightfully so LOL.

It's because Madonna has been malcontent.

Why is everybody using my word? Madonna is not malcontent. She is highly contented. Although I don't know if her wounds are reeeeeeeeealllllllllllllllllly healed. She's still a very sensitive individual I am guessing and very complex!!!

LOL...yes I remember stuff like that all the time back then. People always felt the need to tell me Madonna had sex with horses and dogs. I remember a guy at school brought in this picture of a porn star (who favored Madonna A LOT in the face...I wasn't as experienced as I am now with these things and even I thought it COULD be her...this is pre internet of course) and she had her mouth open with some dudes wang in her hand with jizz all over her face and he was telling everybody that it was Madonna....you know to prove what a WHORE she was....lol. Madonna may "bore" people now or they may be "over" her for not living up to their own expectations but she is not LOATHED like she was then. She was truly hated, besides MJ, I've never seen a star get the hate Madonna got during that era by the media and just going by own personal observations at the time.

And you are right now people look back at what a underrated gem Erotica is, how she was soooo into her work, she had important things to say, she was pushing taboos, pushing the envelope, BOE has become a cult classic of sorts.....lol....I swear I see that movie on some cable channel at least once a month and it's constantly "On Demand". It's amazing how 17 years can COMPLETELY change the perspective of something. Because for all the accolades that era gets these days, as you know it was NOTHING like that actually living through it.

What that tape also proved is how fickle little kids are with music. I remember it all the time, nobody wanted to like something that wasn't current, but suddenly when the next album came out it was cool again. If it was over six months old, it was "out". Because Madonna took a break in 1988, suddenly to those kids, she was "out". I am sure she was considered "out" in early 1986 before Live To Tell and True Blue came out as well, because little kids seem to think if there isn't a current video out, that the music is old and irrelevant.

Oh lord this reminds me of this dude from years ago who was insisting Madonna had sex with a bull because he read it on Pop Up Video. I knew what he was talking about. It was during Take A Bow and one of the popups read something like,

*bloop*

"Madonna once had sex with a bull."

*bloop*

"She once dated Dennis Rodman."

 I guess he didnt get it.

So she is short and not full of wind? Oh and she likes foreskin? :D

:lmao: She is pretty short actually. That being said she has been known to let out a few good blasts of wind here and there. And her views on foreskin? I have no idea.

I remember going into National Record Mart to buy the "Rain" CD maxi, about two years after I had graduated from high school, and a guy I had gone to school with was working there. I put the CD on the counter, he picked it up, rolled his eyes and said, "You still listen to Madonna?!? She's so over."

17 years later, I wonder where the artists he used to listen to are now.

What came to amuse and fascinate me about Madonna as the years rolled on, was … the years rolled on! Despite constant gleeful media predictions that she was no longer "relevant" and soon to be "over," she never was. Massive articles were written on her career demise; obsessive, backhanded compliments to her power and cultural significance.

She is the Most Successful Female Rock Artist of All Time. Madonna has sold over 200 million albums, been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and, even today, despite the haters and critics who "don't like her new music" and "her arms give me the creeps," maintains her position as one of the most influential women in music. Not to mention the top live female concert act in the world.
