What I find interesting is True Blue's high placing. Although I'm still suprised Beautiful Stranger sold as much as it did, it's understandable as there was no parent album to take away from its sales. But True Blue, the third single from an album where the two previous singles were major hits, is remarkable.

Don't forget that Holiday's sales are a culmination of THREE seperate chart placings (the original and the two subsequent re-releases).

And no matter what anyone says, 4 Minutes really was a bona-fide SUCCESS. To rank that high in the diminishing sales climate of 2008 with little promotion is a real achievement. On the programme Paul Gambaccini remarked that Like A Prayer was her "imperial album", where no matter what she released would have been a massive success. Hard Candy though, he said, was her "holding album", neither good or a disaster and simply "held her position" as a relevant chart act and kept interest in her as a major touring act. He said it wasn't an encouraging sign for the sound of future albums.

Whilst Madonna's Top Ten biggest-sellers are in now way a definitive overview of her career, at least the entries prove Madonna has been a big-seller over a 25-year-time-span and not just at the beginning of her career. The Top Ten includes her earliest throw-away hits (Holiday, ITG), her position as the biggest act in the world (PDP, True Blue), her critically-acclaimed masterpieces (LAP), her first foray into electronica (ROL, BS) and her most culturally resonant track of this decade (Hung Up). Poor Michael Jackson's Top Ten is no way as reflective of his legacy. His top two biggest-sellers, as revealed by Radio 2, are Ben and Earth Song. Heal The World and You Are Not Alone are also in the Top Ten over his more iconic tracks such as Beat It, Rock With You, The Way You Make Me Feel, Thriller etc.

i think most people here hate TB, the single, because of the video which they say is awful... TRUE BLUE's UK chart achievement is indeed remarkable, look how it is lumped in there with 1st album releases and soundtrack cuts...

Both Jackson and Madonna lists are full of surprises.

CFY was aslo re-released.

I find it funny in a way that 2 of her longest running no1's are lower down the list.

Actually singles sales are healthy - they have increased overall - more have sold over 250,000 than the last few years. 4mins is a success theres no doubt about that. 4 weeks at no1, top 10 of the year.....all good..

I would disagree that HC held her position - it definitely lowered it. Will madonna scrap albums for touring?

I chanced upon that Radio 2 show from the top 20 onwards and it really was excellent. I had no idea Frozen was inspired by The English Patient - I'd never heard that clip and wondered if it was an outtake from the Mark Goodier interview she did in February 1998.

The biggest unfathomable about Madonna's UK sales is that Vogue is so low down - LAP etc can be explained by its parent album being a big hit but it wasn't the case with I'm Breathless. I often wonder if it was due to the fact that the US maxi was readily available for £5.00 (£1.00 more than the UK CD single) and had a much better track list, so people were buying that and it didn't count towards the chart.

You know QB,i thought the same thing, the UK CD single for Vogue was rubbish, the MAXI was FAB

I have yet to hear this show, its still in iplayer for a couple of days, ill listen to it later, its a shame its not as a podcast.

Any other interetsing notes ?

OT: I remember when ROL was released they did that Madonna Sunday, that was excellent, where they played clips of her interviews along with classics and the new album tracks, i was out driving that day, i was in my car for ages listening to it, back in the days of not having the net and leaks etc, hearing the ROL single for the first time was :wow:

Some very pro-Madonna quotes without being arse lickers. Someone said that Confessions was Madonna realising she needed a number 1 after the AL catasthrope and she pulled it off adroitly.

Paul Gambaccinni had a realistic take on Hard Candy - he said it wasn't a disaster but it suggested that she no longer had her pulse on what's current - which is what has always been the key reason she's stayed on top. I think it's too early to say that - I'm hoping that HC was Madonna wanting to fulfil her contract and took an unispired route to expedite it.

The thing that pisses me off about these shows though is that they get so many of their facts wrong - Music was her 12th UK number 1 and a few other anomalies which I can't remember right now.

I too remember that Madonna Sunday and went BALLISTIC when I heard ROL for the first time - I was playing ROL and DW/SFL all day after taping them - it was the day that I knew she was officially BACK ON TOP :wow:

I have an INKLING that HC may have been her just doing what she can to get one last album out, and saving her creative juices for her first album with LN

It is refreshing when you hear or see a documentary about her which concentrates on the music

The early 90s were a very low sales period for singles. It was before when CD singles took off and 7" were becoming less popular. The top singles of 1990 all sold around 500000 and total weekly sales for singles fell below 1 million on average. I also recall NKOTB having a very low selling number 1 with Hang Tough.

This is why Vogue did not sell more as otherwise it was a massive song in 1990.

NKOTB were no1 with Hangin Tough in Jan 1990 for 2 weeks - a traditionally low period for single sale and then knocked off by Kylie Tears On My Pillow.

In the early 90's we had Unchained melody, Everything I do, Im too sexy and so many more. Vogue was a top 10 seller in 1990

Maybe there was a slight backlash against Madonna because of the LAP video. Controversey must have put some people off.
