Nicki Minaj Talks Super Bowl Performance, Madonna and M.I.A.

Nicki Minaj called into Ryan Seacrest to talk at length about how Madonna changed her life (and her wig) and her disappointment in M.I.A.’s finger flipping at the Super Bowl…

On Madonna’s influence…

“Meeting Madonna changed my life.

Working with Madonna changed my life.

Rehearsing with Madonna for two weeks changed my life.

When you look at these amazing women, you have to realize that a lot of work goes into this. I, for the first time, refused to go to any parties. This performance was it and this is the first performance that I’m proud of in my entire career.

I saw how much Madonna sacrificed and how much she rehearses and rehearses and rehearses and rehearses, and everyone there was like, ‘We got it.’ But she was like, ‘No, I want you to know this choreography in your sleep.’ We did know it in our sleep by the time we got on the Super Bowl stage. But when I saw that, it inspired me so much, the same way Wayne inspired me to start really becoming a beast as a rapper.

The Madonna situation inspired me to give it my all and put that work in.”

On how Madonna got her to change her wig…

“Madonna was the first person in history who was able to make me change my wig.

I had some choices in terms of color and she was like, ‘Nicki…’ She has a way with words. She’s a monster, but when she’s speaking to an artist, she’s really sweet and she knows how to word things so you don’t feel uncomfortable.

She was like, ‘I don’t know about it.’

So I really went through four color changes on my wig for the Super Bowl. We got the platinum blonde and she smiled. Once she smiled, I was like, ‘Thank you Jesus.’ I couldn’t take it anymore.

She was one of the only people who could get me to wear red lipstick and when I did it, I ended up loving it, so I told her, ‘I’m so glad I trusted you. You’re amazing, you’re the queen, and everybody has to bow down.’”

On M.I.A.’s Super Bowl stunt…

“My first feeling was disappointment, only because of my respect for Madonna.

I’m a cuckoo lady too, but I would never be able to do it off the strength of Madonna.

There are fines that go into these things, and I just thought, ‘Oh my God. I hope they don’t penalize Madonna.’

Madonna knows the artist that M.I.A. is and it was her decision to take the risk with all of us. We were kinda all firecrackers and she took that risk.

She’s done some crazy things becoming the icon that she is, so I think that’s why she was able to forgive M.I.A.

I love M.I.A. and I don’t want to say anything that is the wrong thing, but me personally, I couldn’t see myself doing it, just for the respect for Madonna.

I wouldn’t want any backlash to come back on Madonna.”

Riccardo Tisci: Madonna Was so Beautiful… Like a Goddess!

Madonna impressed Riccardo Tisci so much his hands shook when he was measuring her.

The Givenchy designer created all the looks for her “Sticky & Sweet World Tour”.

They first met three years ago, and he was totally overcome, when he realised she wanted to work with him.

He told Grazia UK…

“She asked me to do the costumes for her ‘Sticky & Sweet Tour’.

We met in the middle of nowhere.

She was rehearsing in a basketball stadium somewhere outside of New York.

I watched the show, and she was so beautiful, like a goddess.

They she stepped off stage, came up to me and asked ‘Do you want to take my measurements?’.

So I’m taking her measurements, and my hands are shaking!”

“[For the Super Bowl], I did all the outfits – the clothes, gloves, belt, hat – even the underwear.

Oh yes! When she was dancing, you could see her underwear. So I made her an embroidered pair. I call it couture chic.

She also chose a cloak, which was gold and handmade over several weeks.

It was like a museum piece; the mix of palettes with the fabric, crystals and discs.

Even Madonna was like ‘Wow!’ – and it takes a lot to impress Madonna.”

Madonna’s halftime quiz

Madonna, the material girl, posed the question of “what do I believe ” in the halftime show of the Super Bowl.

As a life-time critic of the American icon, she presented a conflicted message in five parts, ultimately seeking the viewer’s answer to the question above.

First, the Roman centurions, marching in close columns symbolized the beginning of Western civilization.

Next came current American culture with cheerleaders, extreme gymnastics, pom-poms and cheers, seeming a statement of present day history.

Third was a song to promote her new album. Crass commercialism. Ignore this.

Then came the glorious gospel music and choir. Yet Madonna, clad in funeral black, kept singing something like “Live your life as you will.”

Lastly, she dies. Disappears in smoke.

So the question is: Do I, born of Western civilization, live only for myself or do I recognize the dual Western religious principals of honor God and love thy neighbor?

Madonna, fully clothed, earned my respect by asking this question. Or did I imagine this?

The Startup Lesson of Madonna, M.I.A. and the Super Bowl

A week has passed since Madonna’s headlining Super Bowl 2012 halftime show was “disrupted” by the crude gestures of M.I.A. Madonna has been outspoken in her criticism of M.I.A. this past week, citing how she took away from the feeling of “love and happiness” that was otherwise the theme of the performance.

Such is the challenge of having a partnership. It was Madonna’s show but she felt she couldn’t do it all on her own, so she called in help. I have no doubt that the rehearsal went off without a hitch and either M.I.A. stayed on theme or quality control didn’t catch the offending moves.

Either way, whether for self-promotion or simply caught up in the heat of the moment, it happened during the live performance on one of the biggest stages in the world.

Partnerships must be built on trust. Madonna put a lot of trust in M.I.A. and it didn’t work out. Partnerships are difficult for this reason. When they work, they enhance the strengths of all involved. But in order to work, there must be trust and a sense of team over self.

Business partnerships should not be rushed into. Everyone must be on the same page and have the same end-goal in mind. In startups, there will always be periods of great stress and people do not always behave the same when placed under these kinds of stresses.

When entering a partnership, don’t look simply at the value of the partnership on the surface but think through the “what if” scenarios where you might be under great stress. It’s while under stress when you need to be able to trust your partners the most. And in that trust, you must know that they will each hold it together and do their part under the stressful situation.

Startups are hard work and they take an emotional toll. A great partnership can sail through stress more easily than an individual can alone, but a bad partnership will implode under pressure.

MADONNA has always been in full clothing since Bedtime Stories, why do people keep on commenting like it's Penthouse or Erotica years still... unless they classify leotards as a naked dress...

LMFAO's Redfoo Talks Madonna, Mitt Romney

On rocking the Super Bowl and annoying a presidential candidate

Redfoo also talked about the band's run-in with a presidential candidate.

Sky Blu once got into an altercation with Mitt Romney on a plane. What happened?

It was about how he reclined his seat. Romney was sitting behind him – he didn't know we were LMFAO, and we didn't know he was a governor. They talked it out. It's a sensitive situation, because he's running for president.

The pair blew up last summer with their Number One mega-hit "Party Rock Anthem," the year's second-best-selling single after Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." "Our mission," says Redfoo, "is to make the world a party planet."

This Q&A by Austin Scaggs is excerpted from the March 1, 2012 issue of Rolling Stone.

Percussion director Josh Torres Talks About The Super Bowl

Center Grove High School percussion director Josh Torres, 30, has been keeping the beat with drums and other instruments since the fifth grade.

It was those ties that led him into an awesome opportunity – he assembled and directed the 100-member drum line that performed along with Madonna and other artists during the Super Bowl Halftime Show last week.

Torres said to Indystar…

“Each year, the NFL hires a performer (and) a production company that helps make sure that artist fits into the scheme that the Super Bowl Halftime Show requires. At some point, the phone call came from Madonna’s people that they need a 100-member drum line for the halftime show. The production company then called looking for local talent that could help make the event a reality. DCI recommended me based upon my track record with Center Grove High School’s percussion program. I was completely stunned to receive the phone call. I keep telling people it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event, but the reality is it’s a never-in-a-lifetime event. So, my first reaction was, I don’t care what you say next, the answer is yes.

Indiana is a hotbed of talent when it comes to high school drum lines. Initially, I thought that she just needed a normal size drum line. What was I thinking? This is Madonna. Of course, it’s going to be larger than life. As soon I found out that we needed 100 performers, I got on the phone and called a few of the directors that Center Grove regularly competes against. I told them ‘I know that we are busy preparing for competition season, but how can anyone pass this opportunity up?’

Madonna’s people made it clear from the start: No details could be leaked. They told us that we would be removed from the show, if the details were leaked to the press or social media. Everyone that participated in the event had to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Even our principals had to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Then, once we started rehearsing, they had to sign a five-page packet full of non-disclosure agreements and waivers. Finally, we had to fill out another agreement the day before the game.

I basically just told all of the students they could tell their parents, and that was it. They couldn’t tell their friends, extended family or even teachers. We kept it a secret from the entire community. I was very proud of the kids for sitting on the details of this event. It was a very hard secret to keep.”
