HITS:

YOUR WEAKEND TOP 10 CHART PREVIEW: Not a triple-digit total in sight for next week, kiddies, unless something unexpected happens. If anybody’s gonna be celebrating, it’s Warner Bros., which shows signs of thawing out from its mini-Ice Age with three potential Top 10 debuts, though two is a better bet. Interscope stays warm with a possible trey of its own, while RCA has a shot for two, as Kings of Leon near critical mass. Here’s a snapshot of the late-June gloom:

Black Eyed Peas (Interscope) 90-95k

Jonas Brothers (Hollywood) 70-75k

Dave Matthews Band (RCA/RMG) 50-55k

Eminem (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 45-50k

* Regina Spektor (Warner Bros.) 40-45k

* Ginuwine (Asylum) 40-45k

Lady GaGa (Interscope) 35-40k

* Dream Theater (Roadrunner) 35-40k

Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 35-40k

Hannah Montana: The Movie (Walt Disney) 30-35k

* The Mars Volta (Warner Bros.) 30-35k

Kings of Leon (RCA/RMG) 30-35k

* Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Warner Bros.) 30-35k

* Denotes debut (6/26a)

Michael Jackson Album Sales Estimated In Multiple Six Figures

June 29, 2009 - Retail

By Keith Caulfield, L.A.

Michael Jackson is about to rock the Billboard charts.

Nielsen SoundScan's sales numbers won't be released until Wednesday (July 1) morning, but industry prognosticators indicate that three of Jackson's albums -- "Number Ones," "The Essential Michael Jackson" and "Thriller" -- each sold 100,000 copies last week. The sales tracking week ended at the close of business on Sunday (June 28) night.

To compare, Jackson's entire catalog of solo albums sold 10,000 in the week that ended June 21.

The aforementioned titles will also be the top three albums on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog chart, and Jackson may lock up anywhere between six to nine slots in tally's the top 10.

Other Jackson albums looking to make a big splash on the chart include "Off the Wall, "Bad," "Dangerous" and his box set "The Ultimate Collection." Additionally, two Jackson 5 compilations -- "The Ultimate Collection" and "20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection" -- are both doing brisk business.

Previously, the record for the most concurrent top 10 titles by an act was five. Both AC/DC and the Beatles managed that feat. There is also the chance that the entire top 10 on the Pop Catalog chart may be filled with Jackson-related titles, counting the two Jackson 5 compilations.

Last week's No. 1 on the Pop Catalog chart was TobyMac's "Portable Sounds" with 9,000 copies sold. The Pop Catalog chart, established in 1991, houses albums that are at least 18 months old. Catalog albums are ineligible to appear on the Billboard 200 albums chart, though they can chart on the all-encompassing Top Comprehensive Albums list.

Last year, Jackson's expanded reissue of "Thriller" pushed the set to a

re-entry at No. 1 on the Pop Catalog tally with 166,000 copies sold in its first week.

With the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." looking to recapture the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 chart with slightly less than 100,000, this week will mark the first time a catalog album has sold more than a current release.

The bulk of Jackson's album sales came from digital retailers, as many brick and mortar stores quickly ran out of available stock. Sources say his "Essential Michael Jackson," "Number Ones" and "Thriller" each sold more than 30,000 digital albums, with "Essential" moving more than 70,000 downloads alone.

The digital impact will also be felt on our Hot Digital Songs chart, where

the King of Pop is certain to make a big splash. His digital track sales

went from about 40,000 the week ending June 21 to around 1.8 million last week. His top sellers will include "Man in the Mirror," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Billie Jean" and "Smooth Criminal."

Very impressive sales from MJ!! It's pretty much underheard of what is happening with his sales worldwide...and that with only 3 days of sales!! I wouldn't be surprised that next week some of his albums will sell in 200's K each.

This said I'mpfretty sure that Thriller will reach the 30 million copies in the US within the next 2 years. If some of those saleslast for a few weeks I wouldn't b surprised if at least 5 of his albums get 1 to 2 additional certification each within the next 18 months.

^ don't get your panties wet with excitement though, the sales already have shown signs of decline, both in digital downloads singles and albums... BBP have regained #1 in iTunes and the other contemporary songs have started to climb again because of MJ's waning sales...

But who knows, maybe Joe Jackson will have a funeral extravaganza in blue-ray broadcast or whatever and re-ignite a buying frenzy...

Billboard is irrelevant IMO if they do not change their rules after this. I understand why they changed it to begin with, so many old albums were clogging #101-200, but the industry has changed, with the fall in sales, catalog albums are more comparative with current releases than they were ten years ago.

^Even if there was, it's not near the top of the must-have MJ albums list.

nfails, Billboard is not going to change the rules, at least anytime soon- catalog albums, in general, do not sell enough to approach topping the Billboard 200. This is the first time a catalog title has sold enough to be #1 on the Comprehensive Albums chart- and it's because of extraordinary circumstances. Same with the Hot 100, and older titles- unless they're actively promoted, they will not appear on the Hot 100.

Pearl Jam's recent Ten reissue sold near 60K or so, but, again, that wasn't close to being the top-selling album in the country for that week.

If the rules were changed for The Eagles, then they should be changed for MJ as well.

The album charts aren't even that exciting to look at anymore since most of the real sellers aren't even eligible to chart. I'm so sorry that on a typical week more people want Back In Black or Dark Side Of The Moon than a current release, they should be rewarded for this instead of punished by being relegated to pop catalog chart, which is NEVER represented in the Billboard books as a footnote. BEP's not #1 in my opinion or anyone elses except Billboard's. This was Michael's week and everyone else was behind him.

How do we even know these days if a song is "repromoted" when physical singles are dead? When Freddie Mercury died, they reissued Bohemian Rhapsody on single and it recharted. But those days physical singles were still a relevant format. How do we know today if an old single is "repromoted"? Reminds me of the big boost Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" received when it was featured on The Sopranos finale and The Hills around the same time and the song exploded again, but it wasn't eligible to chart again even though the exposure on those two shows made the song once again as popular as a current song.

the eagles album was a new release though.

Yes, but it was only avaliable at one retailer, Wal*Mart.

In the past if this was the case you were disqualified as they considered it unfair that one retailer have the monopoly on a new product.

In that week The Eagles sold over 700k while Britney did just shy of 300k so they changed the rules at the very last minute.

In this case Michael Jackson has the # 1 selling album but is denied that glory, however in the UK and other countries it's a different story.

Michael Jackson Breaks Billboard Charts Records

As predicted, Michael Jackson is once again the King of the Pop charts.

Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, the entire top nine positions on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Albums chart will house Jackson-related titles when the tally is released in the early morning on Wednesday (July 1). Nielsen SoundScan's sales tracking week ended at the close of business on Sunday (June 28) night.

Jackson himself has a record eight out of the top 10, while a Jackson 5 compilation also finds its way into the upper tier.

The King of Pop's "Number Ones" will fittingly lead the pack at No. 1 with 108,000 (an increase of 2,340%) while "The Essential Michael Jackson" and "Thriller" are in the Nos. 2 and 3 slots with 102,000 and 101,000, respectively. Last week "Number Ones" was the only Jackson title on the chart, at No. 20 with 4,000 copies; both "Essential" and "Thriller" re-enter the tally this week.

Additionally, his classic 1979 studio set "Off the Wall" re-enters at No. 4 with 33,000 while his 1987 album "Bad" returns at No. 6 with 17,000. At No. 5, the Jackson 5's "The Ultimate Collection" debuts with 18,000. Jackson's fourth studio album for Epic Records, 1991's "Dangerous," re-enters at No. 7 with 14,000 while his 2001 compilation "Greatest Hits: HIStory -- Volume 1" also comes back to the list at No. 8 with 12,000. Finally, Jackson's 2004 box set "The Ultimate Collection" charts its first week on the Pop Catalog chart, arriving at No. 9 with 11,000.

The lone non-Jackson-related set in the top 10 is a reissue of the "Woodstock" movie soundtrack, which bows at No. 10 with 8,000.

Collectively, Jackson's solo albums sold 415,000 this past week. That's extraordinary, since his titles sold a combined 10,000 in the week that ended June 21. Of the 415,000 total, 58% were digital downloads.

Additionally, the 415,000 albums sold just last week is nearly 40% more than what Jackson's catalog had sold the the entire year up through June 21 (297,000).

Speaking of digital albums, on the Top Digital Albums chart, Jackson has a record six out of the top 10 slots, including the entire top four. "The Essential Michael Jackson" leads the Top Digital Albums list with 80,000 downloads sold, while "Thriller" is No. 2 with 57,000.

With the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." moving back to the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 chart with 88,000, this week marks the first time that a catalog album has sold more than the No. 1 current set on the Billboard 200 albums chart. (All three of Jackson's top sellers on the Pop Catalog chart outsell "The E.N.D.")

Ironically, the feat almost occurred was when Jackson re-issued "Thriller" in February 2008. The set relaunched with 166,000, re-entering at No. 1 on the Top Pop Catalog chart. That week, Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" led the Billboard 200 chart with 180,000 while Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" was at No. 2 with 115,000.

Catalog albums are ineligible to appear on the Billboard 200 albums chart, though they can chart on the all-encompassing Top Comprehensive Albums list. On the latter chart, Jackson's "Number Ones," "Essential" and "Thriller" are at Nos. 1-3, followed by the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." at No. 4.

Jackson places a record 25 songs on the 75-position Hot Digital Songs chart (21 solo hits and four with his siblings), smashing the mark of 14 charting titles established by David Cook in the June 7, 2008 issue. Jackson's Halloween radio staple, "Thriller," moves 167,000, which is good for second place on the chart behind the 203,000 shifted by the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling."

"Thriller" was also Jackson's best seller in the week before his death with 5,000 downloads, which translates to a 3,551% jump. Jackson's total volume of downloads this week -- including his tracks with the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons -- account for 2.6 million downloads, a remarkable number considering last week's cumulative sum was 48,000. Moreover, Jackson becomes the first act to sell more than 1 million song downloads in a week.

Besides "Thriller," Jackson places five other songs in the top 10 including "Man In The Mirror" (No. 3, 165,000), "Billie Jean" (No. 4, 158,000), "The Way You Make Me Feel" (No. 6, 136,000), "Beat It" (No. 7, 134,000) and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (No. 8, 125,000).

Not surprisingly, each of the tracks in the top 10 of Hot Digital Songs were among the top 10 most-played Jackson selections at radio following his passing. According to research provided by Nielsen BDS of monitored airplay from over 1,600 terrestrial and satellite radio stations and cable music channels, "Billie Jean" was the Jackson track with the most spins for the week ending June 28 with 4,540 -- 97% of which occurred after news of his death became public. The track posted only 318 plays in the prior week.
