10 thousands of fans gathered to see their idol at the tokyo narita airport before her landing in.
that became such news in asia and even in the mtv usa back then.
japanese local newspaper called madonna's visit the biggest event since the beatles in japan 60's

madonna was and is the first solo artist ever to tour on a full schedule of stadiums around the world in 1987 even before michael jackson!!!

she has that record.

she used to play in front of 50-80-130 thousands people.

in youtue footages, some girls even fainted.

that was mass hysteria that you can see in madonna and mj concerts only.

that explains a lot.

that means how big and massive she was back then.

madonna's popularity, immensity, fame, influence, controversy, academic researches and studies of madonna subjects at colleges, and wannabe syndrome from 85-87 is the biggest thing it ever happened for a female artist in pop history.

no other female ever matched madonna's yet!!!!

There is something I want to mention about True Blue/1986-87. Usually when Madonna releases an album, there is at least one live performance before a tour. It might be on an award show, TV, promo tour, etc...but when True Blue was released, there is no live performance of anything (that I know of) until the WTGT. I have searched over the years, that maybe there was some rare performance, but I haven't found anything. This is what I think makes TB so unique. I know we can count LMTWGR at Live Aid- but that is even unique, because we have Madonna in her post Virgin Tour look, still looking similar to VT, but with shorter hair, and colored red, (and the start of the florals) singing something from TB. Still, there was never a LTT live, a PDP live, TB, OYH, LIB, WTG live before the WTGT. I think of the award shows she just accepted an award, but no live performance (MTV VMAs, AMAs, for example). Her first album, LAV - they had live performances before the VT. Even LAP had EY at the MTV VMAs. I know there was no "need" for her to perform, because it's all about promotion, but that particular part of the era doesn't have anything live. It's cool, but not cool, because I like seeing her live performances before a tour, because they add up to what we will see on a grand scale.

Yep well spotted fact.

And get this - despite being probably the biggest star in the world in 1986 and True Blue being one of her biggest selling studio albums ever (in the UK it is)... Madonna did not do ONE single TV interview in 1986. Not anywhere in the world!

Closest she got was the brief MTV appearance to announce the True Blue video winner. (no interview there) Or her on-the-set WTG movie interview (which didn't air until Summer 1987).

(And yeah I know mega-mega-stars didn't do much TV in the 80s - but she did at least one TV interview EVERY other year of her career, as far as I know!)

Then, I listened to the B side (ShoBeDo) and I laughed, because I thought it sounded sad and dumb, and I didn't understand how one song can be sooo cool, and the other made me want to break the record.

I felt the same about Shoo-Bee-Doo... Like A Virgin was the first CD I got (not in 1984... I got it in 1986) and the CD-Technology was so new... my dad owned the portable CD player and we only had 4 or 5 CDs at the time... and I forced him to buy Like A Virgin... I remember he only listened to Love Don't Live Here Anymore a couple of times and I tried to tell him that here were so many better songs on the album...

About the transition to True Blue... well... in Germany Madonna wasn't really THAT BIG before True Blue... when it came to female singers it was all about Kim Wilde and Tina Turner and Jennifer Rush... and of course everyone loved Nena... but True Blue made her the biggest star in Germany, especially with La Isla Bonita... that song was the biggest tune in Germany in the summer of 1987 and her first No.1 single... the album was on the Top 75 forever... for almost three years consecutively...

When the Open Your Heart Video premiered on the most popular German TV Show "Formel Eins" my parents didn't want me to see that smut and Madonna was labled "bad"... oh... and I remember that I was never able to get into the Madonna Fan Club... I tried so many times... and I remember that MTV was so desperate to play Madonna videos... Material Girl and Angel were always in rotation... they made their own clip for Angel by taking scenes from previous Madonna videos...

What about the Shanghai Surprise press thing? That was sort of an interview, but not really. I know- you meant her actually being interviewed one on one, like what MTV news used to do, or a talk show. I think it's impressive, anyway- but it still will have been cool to have something live from that year.

LOL there are a few songs that are "Sho be Do" I was like oh no- not this kind of song (like Jimmy Jimmy) - but that is interesting, because not only was Madonna transitioning, but so was music formats. I wanted a CD player, but everyone told me to wait, because they heard that we can soon record on CDs (this was 1988 I am talking about) like we do on cassettes. I am glad I didn't wait, and got one for a graduation present. I used the cd long boxes as things to decorate the walls with.

As I though tit was nice Angel got "video" play- I never liked any of the clip videos (except Into The Groove somehow worked)

yep the word 'virgin' was definitely controversial in the UK! You wouldn't even really use it in polite conversation so that already started things off and appearing in her bra with crucifixes immediately grabbed headlines. Even her pink wig on TOTP was considered outlandish! Material Girl was huge because of the video and I was hooked by the time Crazy For You came out as the shaped pic disc was amazing!

The Penthouse and Playboy nudes were the next big controversy in the summer of '85. That was unbelievable that a pop star would have pictures in 'porn mag' which came just before Live Aid, ITG release and DSS (in UK) so everything exploded together. M in her bra drying her armpits in the film also became a big thing! Such a bold thing for a woman to do. It was a perfect storm. I bought both the albums (which I never did for other artists) and loved DYU, LDLHA and Stay as well as Think of Me and Physical Attraction.

After Live Aid, it was more the filming of Shanghai Surprise that was controversial as it was supposedly going badly so that made great headlines whilst the hits kept coming. M actually disappeared from public though.

I must admit, I was disappointed with the new look and video for LTT but in a way it let the song rise above the image. I loved the jewellery previously and all of a sudden she's in some charity shop dress. Then she cut all her hair off for PDP! However, the music was great and PDP was OK. That did make the press too as her nipple slipped out!

The transition was a massive change and it did take me a while to get over the old look but the True Blue cover was so stunning, it moved things along well and the OYH video came which was stunning. By then, the old look seemed like a thing of the past.

Was South America the only territory where "Shanghai Surprise"'s title was changed to "The adventures of Madonna in Shanghai"?

1985 I was 7 my sister was 16 and Madonna was EVERYWHERE.

Songs all over the charts, number one and two at the same time. Live aid .desperately seeking Susan. Then in early 86 Borderljne being everywhere and then Live to Tell coming out where she looked totally different and then Papa and the short hair.

As far as I remember everyone loved her . She was a phenomenon.

I'm the same age as you, Dr Lecter. :) I became a fan probably sometime in late 1984. I feel like her stardom exploded out of nowhere and before you knew it she was EVERYWHERE. From what I remember, she really struck a chord with the young girls, as I remember we ALL wanted to be her. To look like her, dress like her.

This is the oldest piece of memorabilia that I own (besides my old cassettes), that kind of gives you an idea the beginnings of the phenomenon. It was published in 1985 and the most current thing in there is the Live Aid concert.

I'm always curious as to when Madonna's face became known by the GP

She always said that with the 1984 Borderline video they could put a face to her name

I suppose with 1986 and 1987 THE FACE was born worldwide

The first time I remember being conscious of the name Madonna was when I heard Material Girl in early 1985. I was 8 years old. Of course, later I would realize that she was the singer of Lucky Star and Borderline, which I knew well. But Material Girl was when I made the connection between the singer and a specific song. I was obsessed with her in 1985 as well as Cyndi Lauper and Tina Turner. I used to pretend that three of my Fisher Price toy people were them.

I know there are several of us members who were kids when she became famous, but I'd like to hear from some who were teens; specifically, what you thought of the new look in 1986.

I remember when Papa Don't Preach came out on the radio, being so taken by the orchestral introduction. I also remember that I bought the cassette of True Blue in September of 1986 when only LTT and PDP had been released. So that allbum was my first introduction to the concept of "singles," and it was interesting as I would hear them pop up on the radio one after the other: title track, then Open Your Heart, then La Isla Bonita. I learned what it meant for a song to be "released" as a single via the True Blue album. My local station even spun Where's the Party a couple of times before the WTG singles took over.

This was THE era of Madonna being on all of the teen magazines like 16 and Tiger Beat, and you'd eagerly hope that the new issue would have a "pinup" for your wall.

I know I was only a kid, but let me tell you Papa Don't Preach single and video were THE big deal that summer.

This was a different era, and we didn't have MTV yet at my house. So when Madonna made a surprise appearance at the 1987 American Music Awards to accept an award, that was like a HUGE DEAL. OMG that's Madonna on my TV, not just a video but the actual woman on stage.

WTG amd CAC were HUGE. My friend bought me the singles for my 11th birthday. Didn't feel like place holders at all; they extended naturally from True Blue and continued her dominance on radio.

That is interesting. What I wrote at first about Into The Groove is what connected me to Madonna, I all ready knew Everybody, Burning Up, (basically her first two albums) - but I didn't realize they were "Madonna" until later on when I was a real true aware fan. I can technically say I liked her since 1982, because my brother's girlfriend used to play the everybody 12" all the time, and that is when I was 8, but it was also surrounded by the other music they played, but Everybody stuck out for me. My uncle had her first two albums, and he played them a lot, but again, I wasn't like "who is that", not did I bother looking lol. I used to like looking at album covers of their collections, but the album covers I liked were Yes, or Led Zeppelin, because I liked the art work. I didn't pay attention to the album covers with "people" on them. Still, I didn't connect the Madonna of Into The Groove until way later, and I was like duh, i have liked her all along without realizing it. This happened a lot with bands/performers as I grew up. I didn't start watching MTV until I was 14. It may have been on TV as the older siblings watched, before I was 14, but I went through a few odd anti music phases as I grew up, too.

I loved Cyndi, and Tina, too. I wanted their hairstyles. I used to style my nieces Barbies like Tina, Cyndi, and Madonna lol. Permanent marker and blow dryers did wonders for their hair lol. When Madonna cut her hair off, I got screamed at by my sister for cutting one of the barbie's hair off (even though i bought the dolls for them).

I was and 12 in 1985, so that's pre teen, and 13 in 1986, and that's early teen. I know I all ready answered, but I thought I will share a bit more of the experience.
