Bill Werde: Katy or Beyonce are the current Queen of Pop

M is still queen of pop despite not having had a semi-decent hit since 2008. She has achieved so much more than any other female pop artist in her career.

I would hardly call 4 Minutes a semi decent hit that song was huge internationally it went to #1 in over 30 countries and is her biggest selling single in the US.

It was huge

In fact it was the world's 4th biggest single of 2008.

With the new Billboard rules now adding streaming, 4M would have probably spent at least 1 week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, because it's streaming numbers were huge.

To be considered a 'queen' or 'king' it's not based on *current popularity*. It's longevity, changing the game unlike no other (which M, Aretha, Billie Holiday, Donna Summer, Tina Turner forever did w/in their genres) and amount of worldwide success (hit songs, albums, tours, media hype). It's beyond easier than 1+1 when it comes to 'pop' music and culture NO one has had the w.w. success *30+ years* into their career like M has! This is just an endless silly debate haters continue to have. No one came close to doing what she did before. Since then, there's def. been 100s of attempts to 'be the next Madonna' lmao. If current success made one a queen of pop, Katy or Rihanna hands down are pumping hits out gangsta style not Beyonce lol. The ONLY thing Beyonce did that was noteworthy (recently) was the execution of her album. So far (sorry) the singles have been lackluster and kinda shit. Girl could sing and perform but I think 'overall', she and this album execution thing is beyond one of the most overrated events in recent memory (up there w/ Gags BTW pre album hype). You still (and will always) need good, HIT songs. Yes, XO and DIL aren't flopping but neither of them are doing great at all. People aren't choosing to see that cause it's being overshadowed (again) by the 'innovative way' she dropped her album lol and the media/public just loving 'her'. If M dropped an album this way it would be spun into something negative, desperate etc like she's too afraid to release a single so she just dropped the album blah blah. How could one positively not agree lol

I double clap as they promptly squashed this troll. Still, its still a shame that even when one troll is squashed 10 more pop up who have jobs they don't deserve to have! lol. Only a matter of time before the biggest, fugliest troll Freidman gives his two cents shits on this 'debate' lmao.

Bill Werde is a seedy middle aged man that has official accounts on twitter and ATRL where he converses with teens, so it makes sense that he would say the queen of pop title changes. - he is a little monster after all (DOPE charting a number 8 due to youtube ads, really?!) If gaga can't have the title, in bills mind anyone BUT Madonna should have it.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what Bill Werde has to say, because Bill Werde no longer has a job with billboard due to superiors wanting to bring integrity back to the magazine.

We could examine his comment -

If Beyonce or Katy were the Queen of Pop, there wouldn’t be so much debate and arguing over it. When Madonna was coined the Queen of Pop, there was no arguing over the title: She had the hits, she had classics, she had the power, she had control over her career, she had the artistic vision, she had the humanist vision, and she realised all that in her music, videos and stage performances. And guess what, Bill? Madonna still has the power:
She says the word “reductive” and it trends not only on twitter worldwide, as it becomes to most looked up and googled word on online dictionaries across the planet on that week.
She gets out of her house and opens a gym in Toronto and she causes a frenzy (whether she’s wearing a stage outfit or a simple tracksuit).
She announces the name of her album (M.D.N.A.), it becomes headline news all over the globe.
She announces a new tour, it sells out in minutes.
Whatever she does causes debates.
It’s happened since 1983. It is happening NOW.
Her recent appearances on TV (SNL, and even the grammys) gave those shows the highest ratings they had in a long time.
In the UK, her appearance on the Graham Norton Show in 2012 pulled in an extra 1 million viewers (they had 4.3 million on the Madonna episode, they usually pull in 3 million viewers).
That’s the power Madonna has over the media - no payola, no excessive advertisement, no twitter account. She simply shows up, and the world follows.
Anyone else is only coined the Queen of Pop by their delusional fans or stupid, ignorant, misinformed teenagers.
No one with half a working brain, or a little common sense would ever take the crown off of Madonna’s head.

Most important of all: Madonna was crowned “the Queen of Pop” by her accomplishments. It was the world who crowned her “Queen of Pop”. It wasn’t Madonna who pushed it. It wasn’t her record label who tried to shove down our throats that title. The world media, reflecting the world’s response to every Madonna’s move, crowned her the Queen of Pop.

The fact that an EX member of billboard staff (Gagas BFF) say anyone else is the queen, doesn’t make it a fact.

Who cares what Bill Werde thinks? Being at Billboard gave him a valid reason to chime in with his bullshit. Now that he was canned, he's just another twitter dipshit and only an expert on licking Gaga's vacuous asshole.

I think fans try to downplay the success of that song because it was huge with the general public, but among hardcore Madonna fans it was kind of an "Eh" song. But I agree with everything you said.

I remember at the time how massive the video was on youtube. At one point I believe it was one of the top 5 most watched youtube videos of all time. Before stupid ass Warner took it down and ruined its tally.

Not to put words in anyone's mouth, but I assumed what Drama_Boy was trying to say was that 4M was her last big hit -- glossing over GMAYL as not a "semi-decent hit." That's why I think he worded it the way he did -- not to downplay the success of 4M, but to qualify it as the last truly successful hit. GMAYL technically met criteria, but it was sort of buoyed by the Super Bowl and the deal with Clear Channel in connection with the Super Bowl. Without that, GMAYL would not have added to her tally, unfortunately.

4M was huge, like it or not. It's a shame it doesn't really do well live for her -- a rendition with a live marching band would have been awesome (and the Super Bowl would have been such an easy opportunity, since she had TWO marching bands battling it out, albeit briefly -- and, oddly, the message of 4M would have fit with her "world peace" message at the end, but ...) ... whatevs! The Super Bowl was epic/awesome as it was. Not criticizing. Just thinking it's unlikely she's going to want to perform 4M much in the future. There's only so many ways to interact with a hologram of Justin Timberlake, after all.

She needs a 13th US #1. 13 is her lucky number, after all. :)

Why get PRESSED over this? Mr. Weirdo is no more relevant than the random NOBODY stans on twitter. His sliver of influence is GONE ever since he got DROPPED by Billboard. No more Interscope payola-ed Billboard articles published everywhere praising Joanne's nasty FLOP ass.

Fight the real ENEMY! :voodoo::sour:

ALL OF THIS

I'm beyond sick and tired of people thinking the King or Queen should be someone who's just successful at the moment, it doesn't work like that.
