Shane
it's quite surprising nobody acknowledged Rain as one of her finest ballads... "Rain" is at the top of my list. I think Madonna's voice shines on this song ... a great example of her vocal style post-LAP but pre-Evita, a style that offered a lot to the listener. The lyrics on this ballad are exquisite, and I always loved the production. The live version on TGST is amazing. "Live To Tell," "Promise To Try," "This Used To Be My Playground," "Frozen," "What It Feels Like For a Girl," "Intervention," and "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You" also rate high on my list. Guest ursaminorjim
Technically speaking, the only ballad I think she's ever done is "X-static process." But if we're just talking about slow, romantic songs? I gotta go with "Live to tell."

Lucky guy
It's probably not the best, but my favourite is Time Stood Still, simply because if you asked me now what Madonna ballad I felt like listening to, that would be it. That or TPOG.

Guest MLover
I'm bored at work and this thread has inspired me to post my latest Madonna Collection. I like to play DJ a lot and love to make playlists on my iPod - to me the ORDER of the music is just as important as the music itself (it can make or break). So, my latest playlist is the best collection of Madonna Ballads, or "Light" music. I call it: "106.7 Madonna Lite FM" (the biggest "lite music" station here in NYC - I know I'm corny). Tell me what you think: 1. Borderline 2. Crazy For You 3. Take a Bow 4. Frozen 5. The Power of Goodbye 6. Secret 7. Miles Away 8. Love Profusion (Headcleaner Rock Mix) 9. Candy Perfume Girl 10. Skin 11. Voices 12. Like A Prayer 13. Mother and Father (Live from RIT) 14. Nothing Fails 15. Deserve It 16. Nobody's Perfect 17. Love Tried to Welcome Me 18. One More Chance 19. Hollywood 20. Don't Tell Me 21. Gone 22. Easy Ride 23. Drowned World/Substitute for Love 24. Paradise (Not for Me) 25. Live to Tell 26. Oh, Father 27. Promise to Try 28. Secret Garden 29. Waiting 30. Erotica 31. Justify My Love 32. Forbidden Love (Bedtime Stories) 33. I Want You 34. You'll See 35. Love Don't Live Here Anymore 36. Bad Girl 37. Rain 38. Rescue Me 39. Devil Wouldn't Recognize You 40. X-Static Process 41. Intervention 42. I'll Remember 43. Cherish 44. True Blue 45. This Used To Be My Playground 46. Time Stood Still 47. Shanti/Ashtangi 48. Sanctuary 49. Bedtime Story 50. Like It or Not (If you listen to them in order, you'll see how the songs "go", and meld together nicely. There's a flow to it all)
StrawberryBounce12
LIVE TO TELL, TAKE A BOW, THIS USED TO BE MY PLAYGROUND and LOVE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE. All top notch songs and her best ballads to date imo.
