HolidayGuy
Sorry it was in the wrong thread, Danny. This likely isn't a complete list, but I'm sure the biggies (100+ spins/week) are all in tact. I went through Prince's entries in the top Pop Singles book. He may have had some tracks that were R&B hits. Prince Recurrent Airplay 4/17/09-4/23/09 (Rhythmic AC play not included) 1. When Doves Cry: 657 (+13)- 4.856m 2. Guest Danny86
^Thanx a lot HG! Any reason why past hits like "Alphabet St", "Cream" or "7" barely get love from recurrent? I'd think "Cream" has that classic feel even. Surprised about "Purple Rain" not being among the top 5. It's a bit like Madonna's, they chose a couple of tracks that remain huge but the rest is meant to be forgotten.

HolidayGuy
Well, the five most-played Prince tracks are his undisputed classics. Both Prince and Madge have five tracks that get spun 400+ times (or nearly that) a week on average. "Cream" and "7" don't get much recurrent love- it's like M's post-TIC-era hits, in a way. None of them, outside TAB, Music and DTM, get a high volume of play. Though, in contrast, none of Prince's 1990-on output gets much in the way of recurrent play. His biggest hit in the last 15 years was "The Most Beautiful Girl...," and that gets recurrent play near the level of "I'll Remember," it looks. Madge has enjoyed more success in terms of hits, so it makes sense she'd have more tracks receiving higher levels of recurrent play. Jason- the Delilah effect on TPOG is immediately seen- it has 126 spins in the last week, comapred to a single spin for the prior period. TPOG went from 0 to 120 spins at AC. I'm so sad that songs like Frozen and TPOG have no airplay on AC. Is there any chance that, in the future when the AC stations are gonna focus on 90s, these songs are gonna get played more? All the huge Madonna songs on AC radio like Borderline and Holiday had big numbers on AC from the very beginning? Or during the late 90s, when the core base of AC became the 80s, there was a spin increase? For example, Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield has been doing great on AC since it was released and in 20 years it's gonna probably still be on rotation. I mean, is there any chance in 2019 to see Frozen doing well? The bad thing is that HOT AC, which focus more on 90s than 80s, doesn't play Frozen either. I found Delilah's number the other day. When I come there this summer I'm gonna ask from any friend to call her and pretend that he's in love with a girl blah blah blah and ask for Frozen... I cannot call because I have accent It's so cool when Delialh plays a song! You know that millions of people are gonna hear it!

They make it seem both of them were 80s artists and after that Prince went to obscurity (which is true, but "Cream" deserves more and the late 80s hits are not that played either) and Madonna only had 2-3 comeback singles after 1990. I'd understand if it was only the Erotica & AL singles ignored (though "Rain" was an airplay hit), but Madonna had 8 more Gold singles between TIC & Music, yet they are written out of recurrent radio history. And ROL was her biggest success in the US after TIC yet its singles barely register any airplay. You could argue that most of these hits were "short lived" and very "current sounding" to become classics, but what was "True Blue" then? I'd also argue about "Crazy For You" or "Cherish", how can they get more airplay than "Express Yourself" or "Like A Virgin"? Also, what happened to "Die Another Day"? This time last year it was repeated a million times that it was her last big airplay hit, yet songs like "Hung Up" or "Ray Of Light" are played more now? HolidayGuy
Something like DADay isn't as "pop" and mainstream as the 80s hits, though- I'd also say the same for "Ray of Light." ROL is a definite classic, acclaimed track- but its sound is a little out there compared to other top 40 fare (certainly not as out there as something like "Bedtime Story," but not as sing-songy and pop as a lot of TIC tracks, or even "Music" and DTM). The only thing I can think of RE LAV not getting nearly as much recurrent play as other IC classics is that it may be viewed as kitsch/campy, despite its classic status. Same with MG. Jason- there are songs from the 90s that get loads of recurrent airplay- Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris" and Shania Twain's "You're Still the One" being two off the top of my head. I don't think M's lack of play for the 90s hits has much to do with AC stations and any kind of decade focus. The post-TIC era just wasn't quite as mainstream as TIC era (IMO)- Madonna still crafted pop music, but it wasn't as radio-friendly for the long haul, for the most part. Make sense? "Hung Up" fits the pop mold very well, moreso thsan most of her hits from the last decade-plus, and it didn't do all that hotly in initial airplay. Will it pick up as the years go on? We'll see. Make sense? I agree that would describe the ROL era and the flop BS singles, but most of the 1993-1997 period produced some of Madonna's most radio friendly hits. But that doesn't mean much, because a radio megahit from that era like "One Sweet Day" is not that played now either, right?
HolidayGuy
"One Sweet Day" gets decent recurrent play- but nothing comprable to the size hit it was (16 weeks at No. 1). As for M's 1993-1997 hits- aside from IR, "Secret" and TAB- "Rain" is from the backlash era; BS and HN were two of her least radio-friendly, as were YMLM and DCFMA (original version; the dance mix is kinda campy, though enjoyable). YS was mainstream, but while it's a decent track, it' wasn't as big as CFY or TAB. Radio and the public just love TIC-era Madonna more than anything to come after it- that was her heyday, after all. Here are Mimi's recurrent stats for the past week ("Sweetheart" is missing, though at last check, it was gettign 3-6 spins a week). As usually is the case, anytime there's a huge gain at AC, it's more likely than not as result of syndicated-program play. I will post Madge's shortly. Guest Danny86
Well, Mariah has several hits that are not that much played anymore ("Honey" etc), but surprised that nothing from her debut is among the top 10 most played, even though that record is supposedly one of her most acclaimed and they were all #1s. Syndicated-program play at Urban AC likely accounted for those jumps. BTW, in the last 7 days, TUTBMP is up from 3 spins to 101- thanks to a 0 to 87 spins gain at AC, and a 3 to 12 at Hot AC. iasonas
I thought this video is a bit interesting. In Boston, the request song was American Life and Madonna said it was banned on the radio!!! Does she really believe it was banned? I guess we all know the reason it didn't do ok is the way the US radio works. And I guess it hit 23m of impressions, right Holidayguy? So it's not very tragic. Do you remember if any big channels like z100 and KIIS played it, at least during the first days when they hadn't had callout results yet? Could you please tell us the peak positions on each format? Please! I guess only top40 and maybe Hot AC? Did you notice any decline on her recurrent airplay back then?? Clear Channel AC, HOT AC and Rhythmic AC channels around the US are huge supporters of her older hits. Maybe more than any other american radio copany. Why did everyone blame clear channel...? I remember back in 2006, when Sorry was released, I was listening to a radio station here in Athens and the DJ said that Madonna said the US radio doesn't like her anymore. Is this true? I have never heard anything like that. I guess she was shocked people requested it! She's like she wants to delete it from her memory!

Are you sure you're not confusing Madonna mentioning about the original video being banned? Then again, the video wasn't either. It just never was released. I recall American Life getting a few spins in my neck of the woods and I live in middle America where Madonna is hardly played. I remember being shocked of hearing it because I didn't expect to get any airplay. Though, DIE ANOTHER DAY got decent airplay and I supposed they were giving AL a chance before cutting it from their line up and I didn't hear it much after it's initial release to radio. I do believe U.S. radio is no longer interested in playing her, especially on the pop stations that play new and current music. And I do recall Madonna stating that radio has pretty much abandoned her.
HolidayGuy
AL got a terrible reaction from listeners, hence its No. 61 peak (and just 3 weeks charting) on Hot 100 Airplay. Age pretty much is Madonna's main issue- what females over a certain age consistently get strong airplay in the USA? Even when Cher had her "Believe" comeback at 53 or so, it was just that one track- the follow-up "Strong Enough" then peaked at No. 57. Since Janet Jackson turned 40 (and even before), she hasn't been able to rack up any notable hit at top 40 radio (urban occasionally tosses her the bone- i.e. with "Call on Me," though that featured Nelly). Mimi just turned 40, so we'll see how she fares. She still may be able to rack up some decent play, though, cosnidering she crafts music for mass radio consumption. But it won't be as sure a thing, I'd think.

HolidayGuy
LOL Jason- you are some dedicated Delilah fan. It doesn't look like the Delilah play impacted, unless "Borderline" had an overall drop in general, and was boosted by Delilah to a 26-spin gain. Last night's airplay should be included in the latest update. 5/18/09-5/24/09 (Monday-Sunday period) (Rhythmic AC play not included- tracks usually getting OK play at this format include Holiday, Borderline, LS, ITG, LAP, Vogue, Music) Recent Track Miles Away: 25 spins (+2)- .088m audience 1. HolidayGuy
As an FYI for those who like to compare stats, here are Mimi's airplay stats for the past week. Mimi's 10-most-played recurrent tracks (excluding the recent "My Love") garnered an impressive 3,596 spins, compared to Madonna's 3,972. Mimi's audience for the 10 tracks was 22.05 million, compared to Madonna's 30.02 million. When you expand to their 25 most-played tracks, Madge's lead increases- 5,033 spins vs. 4,394. iasonas
Much better numbers for Madonna! Also, very interesting that even though We Belong Together has like 200+ more spins than Madonna's no1, their million audience is almost the same. The big markets are clearly supporting Madge more. 106.7 Lite Fm in NY, for example, the nation's no1 AC station is playing way more Madonna that Mariah. They even supported Jump just a little back in 2006 when Warner released it first on Ac and Hot Ac stations:)
