Do you really think she can take off an Christmas album on Christmas week of #1?

I hope she could.

well, The Breakthrough sold 700k it's opening week, and that was before Be Without You had really taken off. Circuit City was already sold out of it, and Best Buy only had about ten copies left when I was there earlier

Groban's 'Noel' Makes Chart History

December 18, 2007

By Geoff Mayfield, L.A.

With a fourth week at No. 1 for his "Noel" on The Billboard 200, Josh Groban carves himself a piece of chart history.

This becomes the first Christmas set in the 51-year history of Billboard's weekly album chart to hold the top rung for four consecutive weeks, and only the second to chalk up that many chart-topping weeks. Elvis Presley's "Elvis' Christmas Album," which became the first seasonal title to reach No. 1 in 1957, was the only other one to lead the list for four weeks, but the fourth of those frames was not consecutive.

When Nielsen SoundScan refreshes its charts tomorrow morning (Dec. 19), Groban's "Noel" will show a 15% gain for a weekly sum of 669,000, the largest stanza for any Christmas album since Kenny G's "Miracles -- The Holiday Album" rang 819,000 in the Christmas week of 1994. That is the largest week measured by a holiday album in Nielsen SoundScan history.

More significantly, with this volley, Groban's "Noel" becomes the bestselling album of the calendar year, overtaking "High School Musical 2." The former now approaches 2.8 million copies since its Oct. 2 release, while the Walt Disney soundtrack has posted 2.7 million since it reached stores Aug. 14.

"High School Musical 2" holds at No. 6 on The Billboard 200 but shows a 39% increase, which takes its total to 178,000. The album’s growth was fueled by the Dec. 11 DVD release of the Disney Channel film. Regardless of whether "HSM 2" or "Noel" ends up being the year's bestseller, the winner will have the latest release date on any year's top-unit title since Nielsen SoundScan launched in 1991.

"Noel" also becomes the first album since No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom" in December 1996 to lead the chart for four straight weeks with gains in each of those weeks.

Billboard.com:

Groban Remains No. 1, Becomes '07's Best-Seller

December 19, 2007

by Katie Hasty, N.Y.

Josh Groban sets a new record on The Billboard 200 with "Noel," becoming the first Christmas album to top the chart for four straight weeks. The 143/Reprise set moved 669,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, a 15% increase from last week's sum. Elvis Presley's "Elvis' Christmas Album" also sat on top for four weeks, but non-consecutively.

With total sales at 2.77 million, "Noel" has now surpassed the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack as this year's top selling album.

Alicia Keys' "As I Am" (J) sits tight at No. 2 for a second week with 292,000, a 24% sales hike. The Eagles' "Long Road Out of Eden" (Eagles Recording Co.) stays at No. 3 with 241,000 (+18%) and the multi-label "Now 26" hits compilation keeps No. 4 warm for a third week with 191,000 (+21%).

Mannheim Steamroller's American Gramophone set "Christmas Song" rockets up 11-5 with 180,000, a whopping 98% increase as the Christmas holiday draws near. "High School Musical 2" holds tight at No. 6 for a fourth week straight with a 39% sales boost to 178,000. Moving 177,000 copies, Miley Cyrus' Disney double-disc set "Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus" slips 5-7 despite a 34% advance.

Big Machine artist Taylor Swift's self-titled debut ascends 9-8 with 139,000 (+40%), while another country effort, Carrie Underwood's "Carnival Ride" (Arista Nashville), falls 7-9 with a 29% increase to 137,000. Garth Brooks' Pearl set "The Ultimate Hits" drifts down 8-10 despite a 14% uplift to 119,000.

Bow Wow & Omarion's T.U.G./Columbia collaboration "Face Off" is the week's top debut, entering at No. 11 with 107,000. Last December, Bow Wow's "The Price of Fame" started at No. 6 with 262,000 while one week later, Omarion's "21" bowed at No. 1 on the chart with 119,000.

Other debuts this week, which are largely hip-hop and R&B efforts, include Birdman's "5*Stunna" (Cash Money) at No. 18 with 86,000, Mario's "Go" (J) at No. 21 with 77,000, the Wu-Tang Clan's reunion album "8 Diagrams" (SRC Records) at No. 25 with 68,000, The-Dream's "Love/Hate" (Def Jam) at No. 30 with 59,000 and rapper Beanie Sigel's "The Solution" (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam) at No. 37 with 49,000.

Sales this week (17.98 million units) are down 23.1% compared to the same week last year (23.39 million). This week's sum is up 24.4% from last week's.

INDUSTRY'S HAIL MARY PASS

Growing Pains Looking Like 600k, but Not Enough to Top Groban

December 19, 2007

Ordinarily, Josh Groban’s Noel, which just notched its fourth consecutive trip to the top of the HITS Album chart, would start to slow down as Christ’s birthday approaches, but that’s not the case, as it soars towards the 700k sales mark on next week's chart, according to reports from retailers around this great, big consumer country of ours.

That looks like it will be enough to hold back Mary J. Blige, whose Geffen album Growing Pains, which hit the street yesterday, is on target for 600k, give or take, with a full week of pre-Xmas foot traffic in front of her.

As for the other expected chart debuts, Atlantic’s R&B star Jaheim (180k) and rapper Lupe Fiasco (150-160k) are next up, followed by GospoCentric/ZLG’s Kirk Franklin (70-80k) and hip-hopper Chingy’s first album for Ludacris' DTP/IDJ label (30-35k).

As we swing into the busiest retail week of the year, the market was up 24.4% vs last week, down 23% vs. same week last year and now down over 15% year-to-date.

It’s getting so bad we can’t afford a stocking for the requisite lump of coal.

oh well, 600k is still respectable. It's funny how this and The Breakthrough's openings were almost as large as Love And Life (her 2003 flop)'s total. L&L was around 850-900k total.

2002-2003 was a really bad time to be a "diva"

I hate to say it, but I love that song Superstar by Lupe Fiasco, and the video.

He's a very good, thoughtful and under-appreciated rapper who gets a lot of love from music critics. He'd have bigger commercial success if he was a thug, dumbed down his lyrics, sang about doing drive-bys and smacking around his hoes. :dramatic:

From HITS:

IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMA$: You want big numbers? We got big numbers. Thanks to the pre-Xmas shopping frenzy, it’s the same as it ever was (to borrow David Byrne’s line), albeit for one week only—so enjoy it while it lasts. Here’s what we’re projecting as we head into the big weekend:

1. Josh Groban (Reprise), 700-725k

2. Mary J. Blige (Geffen), 600-625k (debut)

3. Alicia Keys (J/RMG), 450-475k

4. The Eagles (ERC), 325-350k

5. Hannah Montana 2 (Disney), 275-300k

6. Now 26 (EMM), 225-250k

7. High School Musical 2 (Disney), 200-225k

8. Carrie Underwood (Arista/RMG), 200-225k

9. Taylor Swift (Big Machine), 180-190k

10. Rascal Flatts (Lyric Street/Disney) 170-180k

11. Mannheim Steamroller (AG), 160-170k

12. Chris Brown (Jive/ZLG),160-170k

13. Colbie Caillat (Universal Republic), 160-170k

14. Jaheim (Atlantic), 150-160k (debut)

15. Led Zeppelin (Atlantic), 150-160k

16. Lupe Fiasco (Atlantic), 140-150k (debut)

In an active week like this one, things can change dramatically, of course. But if this heat holds up, we’ll be looking at more triple-digit totals than we’ve seen since President Kerry took office and withdrew our troops from Iraq back in 2005. Amen. (12/21a)

It's incredible that an album can scan close to 3 million in 6 weeks in this day and age. Can someone post Josh Groban's weekly sales please?

It is pretty crazy & nice. If his numbers hold up over the weekend he will have sold approx 3.5 million units

in this short time!

although I don´t like those kind of albums, I´m happy to see somebody selling that much, without being an American idol contestant or using a rapper
