In 1992, actress-model Isabella Rossellini made headlines when she collaborated with Madonna on what was to become the Material Girl's most controversial project to date, the Sex book.
HuffPost Live's Ryan Buxton grilled Rossellini on her feelings on Madonna's Sex now, 22 years after its release. In recent years, the star, now 62, has been critical of the book, calling it "moralistic" in its approach to the subject matter.
"I was delighted to be able to work with [photographer Steven Meisel] and I was delighted to work with Madonna, because she's a very interesting woman," she said. "I wanted to be part of it when they asked me to be part of it."
As for the final product, she said, "If you see a businessman -- or me, an older woman -- naked, there is a vulnerability. I thought that the book lacked that."
She added, "Madonna was almost too beautiful, too perfect ... too shaped, to have that vulnerability or the sense of shock that a regular, more normal, not so professional fitted body, could convey."

Classy woman with a an articulate and intelligent opinion.

Totally agree. Always love hearing Isabella's views. She really inherited so much class, intelligence and beauty from her mother Ingrid Bergman while having her own strong identity and views.

Madonna looked so hot in the Sex book but I think the virgin tour body would have looked so much hotter.

Madonna had no ass in sex it was the only let down ( and the old man picture)

That's so anachronistic

The Virgin Tour body was amazing

But it looked great within that context in Madonna's career and the general context of the early to mid 80s

It would have been out of place in this early 90s project

Wasn't this posted before?

Baby I swear it's déjà vu :dramatic:

I don't know if this one in particular was posted before

This Huffington Post UK interview is from a few days ago

Apparently she spoke on this subject before

This is another interview from last year

This is what she said about SEX in 2010:

''I was working a lot with the photographer Steven Meisel. I didn't know Madonna and Madonna had approached Steven to do a book about sex. And of course, sex is very interesting. Even me, when I'm making my own little films, I address how animals have sex. It's very interesting, sex. And Steven was tempted -- instead of doing a book about all his photos he did for Vogue and all the past photos as a r'sum' of his life -- to do something challenging. So I thought he had a point. Sex is interesting.

But I don't think the book worked, even though the photos were extraordinary and some of them quite memorable. I think there was a little bit of a moralistic sort of "I'll teach you how to be free!" and that bothered the hell out of me. Because I think if you want to practice abstinence and that makes you happy, you are OK. If you want to be gay, that's OK. If you want to screw anything that moves, that's OK. It's funny to use the word moralistic for that book because people probably don't put those together, but it was a little bit of "I know better!" and didn't like that.''

That's so true, and sums up Madonna generally during 1992-1993. She learned and moved on. Good for Madonna, and Isabella for being on point.

Isabella is so great, and beautiful and bright. Although i don't agree with her opinion (i think that Madonna was mocking us all and simply trying to shock, i dont' find anything moralistic about the book) i love it that is a very respectful critic.

I like Isabella & much of the book. I think one of the most interesting things regarding the book is how fast M appeared to move on very quickly after the erotica era. She did not allow any setbacks with the book to hold her back creatively or in her career.

I agree. Her body during the Sex era was perfect for it.

Also am i the only one who kinda like the old man pic? :chuckle:

Total rubbish about Madonna not having an ass in SEX. In 1992 you didn't have to have an ass like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez because they didn't exist yet. Perhaps today's pop culture obsession with having a tiny waistline with a huge ass has clouded perception somewhat. I actually have a little newspaper clipping from 1994 where Madonna was voted 'Best Bum' by a collective of US trainers and showbiz types.

The photo of Madonna in the US Vanity Fair cover story where she is wearing an assless outfit also comes to mind in proving what a great bum she has.

Signed !!
