Trying to "present" Madonna to an 18 year old...

Recommended Posts

and i have no idea what to show that could "hook" him to her...so i need your help.

He's actually opened to the idea of knowing her and her work.

He likes most pop stars nowadays and his fav is Adele. But he likes Beyonce, a couple katy songs, old school Gaga (yeah he doesn't care about her now) etc...but above all he likes to see a great show and a good voice...which is why i think he's gonna love Madonna if the right thing is shown.

Any ideas? :D

Name one tour and one performance.

Tour...i'm kinda torn between S&S and MDNA. Please don't mention stuff like Blond Ambition Tour cause he (or any 18 year old) would cringe at that Cherish performance or Material Girl, etc xD And i like the idea of showing something that will sound and look fresh, instead of trying to make Madonna an 80's "artifact".

Also, if you know a good youtube video with a retrospective of Madonna's most famous songs/singles, it would be nice as well :D

Thank you!

I can't link anything right now but I think finding a really good YouTube compilation of her greatest hits / best video / tour moments would be a really effective way to do it.

Most people these days are used to short-attention-span videos and entertainment, so something like a megamix could expose him to all sorts of her material but in a quick, entertaining way. I'd show him something like that before an entire tour all at once, etc. JMO!

One performance that I've shown to many either casual or non-fans is: Vogue, Sticky and Sweet.

They've ALL been super impressed with it. Then, to show them that she can also just sit there and sing, I show them: You Must Love, Sticky and Sweet.

Again, they're ALL left impressed and surprised by her talent and voice. It's ironic, though, since Sticky and Sweet is my least favorite of her tours. :-/

Also, I think that Frozen, live from either The Reinvention Tour or Drowned World Tour, would work really well.

From MDNA, I've shown off the whole Chearleading section with EY and GMAYL and, later, Like A Prayer and Celebration to GREAT effect. (I'm sorry, but, as much as we love it, I've noticed that the whole intro section of MDNA has left non-fans feeling cold and bewildered.)

Old-time tour performances to consider are: Oh Father/Live to Tell and Keep it Together from Blond Ambition; and Everybody from The Girlie Show.

As far as one-off TV performances go:

1) a LOT of non-fans have been impressed with Express Yourself from the 1989 MTV Awards;

2) as stated above, the 1991 Sooner or Later performance at the Oscars has left them in awe; and

3) her performance of Bad Girl on Saturday Night Live in 1993 has wowed them, too.

Hope this helps!

It's not from a tour but there's no way he wouldn't love her after seeing this. PURE TALENT right there.

it's real perfection... are there people here old enough to remember the headlines after that show? would have loved to read about the praises she got...

I remember seeing the performance live - at 12/13 years old - and remember my whole family being FLOORED at her awesome performace. We all watched it together since they knew what an M loon I was. ;)

I do remember her getting RAVE reviews, but, unfortunately, most media outlets focused on her and Michael Jackson going to the Oscars together. THAT was the big talk of the night, and most telecasts and articles glossed over her performance. But, here are some links to positive feedback of her performance:

Still say this his the best Madonna megamix I have ever seen. Wish Robin S. would do an updated one and add more songs plus some of her classic ballads.

I really am thinking about showing S&S...it has hits, voice, evergy, dance, interation with the audience. It's like a bit of old + new.

And i do agree...MDNA is good...but he'd probably fall asleep during that 1st section...dunno though.

Present something from 2006-onward, first. Showcase Madonna's timeline in reverse.

I became a fan of Madonna at 16 (back in 2008) & it was her "longevity" that I found most impressive; this woman was foxy & fit at fifty years old & unlike any other pop star out! The fact that she was older than, but still better than, the newer girls was awesome. Getting familiar with her current stuff opened the door for me to explore her back catalog (DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT burst out of the gate with her 'classic' stuff as it shows her in a nostalgic light ala Micheal Jackson).

Show the Confessions Tour, then Sticky and Sweet, then MDNA. Between the three, you get the best of Madonna. If not all three full tours, I think the Equestrian and Disco segments from CT, the Pimp and Old School segments from S&S and the Transgression and Masculine/Feminine segments from MDNA encapsulate the right about of energy, artistry, talent, and pure fun that Madonna represents. If he can fall in love with current Madonna, he can fall in love with all of Madonna.

I actually wrote an article for such an occasion. It's a countdown of Madonna's Top 20 moments in anticipation for the new album. It features YouTube clips for each moment and includes a mini-bio in there, too. I tried my best to cover her entire career, not just focus on the eighties. Here's the article:
