thebigham
HITS: YOUR MIDSUMMER WEAKEND TOP 10 CHART PREVIEW: We’ve had some atypically big weeks this summer; this will not be one of them. The only album definitely headed for six figures is Decca’s soundtrack to Mamma Mia, which is riding the wave of the movie and should grow to125-135k. Hollywood’s Miley Cyrus has a shot to hit 100k, while the 2007 album from Atlantic’s Kid Rock continues to rise from the dead on the strength of a grass-roots hit single and will fight it out with Mercury Nashville’s Sugarland as both trend toward 90-95k. Hip-hop phenom Lil' Wayne (Cash Money/Universal Motown) should round out the Top 5 with 70-75k, followed by Coldplay (Capitol) with 60-65k. Next week’s top debut will be Lloyd (The Inc/Universal Motown), who could finish anywhere from #7 to #9, depending on how Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) and Camp Rock (Walt Disney) wind up; all three are projecting 40-45k. Another debut, this one from country vet Keith Anderson (SBMG Nashville), should secure the #10 slot with 35-40k. Nipping on the heels of next week's Top 10 are four releases lined up to land in the neighborhood of 30-35k: Now 28 (Capitol), Jonas Brothers (Hollywood) and bows from Heidi Newfield (Curb) and Trapt (Eleven Seven). You may now return to wondering how an album featuring film actors butchering Abba songs (if such a thing is possible) could possibly cartwheel to the top of the charts. Lucy Goosie
Looking forward to the final numbers as Shelby Lynne's latest album is Top 10 at Itunes thanks to a piece on her on CBS's Sunday yesterday. Her 2000 album I Am Shelby Lynne is Top 50 too but that will be ineligible to chart. I really hope her two days of sales can return her to the Top 200. While Kid Rocks song has really grown on me, and I "get it" why its so big, but why and how is the actual album selling shitloads week after week? lol because he's a greedy little shitbag who won't let his fans decide between downloading the single or buying the album (ie, the record label mentality which led to downloading) and they have to buy the album
HolidayGuy
Why hasn't Kid Rock followed the same practice in other countries, in terms of iTunes? He says how iTunes shouldn't be able to tell him how it wants to sell his music- is it any different in other countries? (I imagine not, since one can buy the track individually in other laces)

He says how iTunes shouldn't be able to tell him how it wants to sell his music- is it any different in other countries? (I imagine not, since one can buy the track individually in other laces) Kid Rock isn't well-known in other countries. Friends in Europe say this is his first hit single there, compared to the decade he's been successful in America. I understand Kid's frustration, but at the same time, the whole "you can't have a single, you have to buy all twelve songs at $15 to get this song" thing really hurt the industry in the long run because people were fed up with having to buy entire albums to get one good song and it was a justifyable excuse to downloading when it took off IMO. He should do a regular US single or something then (like he did with "Picture" several years back) if he wants to prove he's not just some greedy prick. A lot of recordbuyers from the 90's are still bitter at some of the crap we wasted money on, when a simple single would've sufficed, lol.

thebigham
Billboard.com: 'Mamma Mia!' Leaps To No. 1 On The Billboard 200 August 13, 2008 by Katie Hasty, N.Y. It took five weeks, but the ABBA-led soundtrack to "Mamma Mia!" has ascended to the summit of The Billboard 200 for the first time. Moving 130,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, the Decca effort climbs 3-1 and becomes the second soundtrack this year to take No. 1, behind Rhino's "Juno" soundtrack in January. The film soundtrack to "Mamma Mia!" also crowns Top Internet Albums and Top Soundtracks, while the original cast recording of the stage musical continues its reign on Top Cast Albums for a third week. The last year two or more soundtracks earned the top spot on The Billboard 200 was in 1998, when "Titanic," "City of Angels" and "Armageddon" all had their turn at No. 1. ABBA has never had a top 10 album on the Billboard 200; the Swedish pop act's highest charting set is 1978's "The Album," which peaked at No. 14. However, the group is No. 1 on Top Pop Catalog albums with its greatest hits package "Gold," which jumps 37% to 33,000 copies. Miley Cyrus' "Breakout" (Hollywood) sits at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 for a second week after a 37% sales decrease to 102,000 copies. Last week's chart-topper, Sugarland's "Love on the Inside" (Mercury Nashville), falls to No. 3 with 91,000, a 47% sales slide, while Kid Rock's "Rock N Roll Jesus" (Atlantic) takes a 6% sales hit to 90,000 and holds steady at No. 4 for a third week. Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" remains at No. 5, also for a third week, after selling 67,000 (-15%). Despite a 21% sales loss to 55,000, Coldplay's "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" (Capitol) climbs a notch 7-6. R&B star Lloyd's third album, "Lessons in Love" (The Inc./Universal Motown), is this week's hottest debut, bowing at No. 7 with 51,000. His last set, 2007's "Street Love," began at No. 2 with 144,000. The Jonas Brothers-led soundtrack to Disney's "Camp Rock" ascends 9-8 with 47,000 (-18%). Rihanna's newly reissued "Good Girl Gone Bad" climbs back into the top tier 12-9 on a 18% sales surge to 44,000; the album likely picked up steam from the latest single "Disturbia," which climbed 4-3 on the Hot 100 with a bullet last week. Former Trick Pony vocalist Heidi Newfield's Curb solo debut "What Am I Waiting For" lands at No. 10 with 34,000. The album also lands at No. 2 on Top Country Albums. Another country artist, Keith Anderson, notches his highest charting album and best sales week with the Columbia effort "C'mon!," which debuts at No. 12 on The Billboard 200 with 32,000. His last offering, 2005's "Three Chord Country and American Rock and Roll," debuted and peaked at No. 77. Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst's self-titled solo debut for Merge begins with 29,000 at No. 15. Moving 25,000 copies, Eleven Seven rock act Trapt's third studio effort "Only Through the Pain" bows at No. 18. The second volume of "Total Dance 2008" (Thrive/Red) bows at No. 21 (23,000) and features Stryker's remix of hits like Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" and Missy Elliott's "Shake Your Pom Pom." Other debuts this week include Hawthorne Heights' "Fragile Future" (Victory) at No. 23 with 20,000, country singer Jamey Johnson's "That Lonesome Song" (Mercury Nashville) at No. 28 with 17,000, rock act Norma Jean's "Anti Mother" (Tooth & Nail) at No. 29 with 16,000 and Randy Newman's "Harps and Angels" (Nonesuch) at No. 30, also with 16,000. At 7.16 million units, sales this week are down 2.7% from last week's sum and down 10.9% from the same week last year.
Guest nothingfails0603
^ why is Rihanna's reissue still doing so well? The DVD on that is not worth the upgrade at all. Maroon 5's reissue had more to offer and it hasn't done nearly as well.
thebigham
HITS: JONAS TOPPING 720K, CAN IT BEAT COLDPLAY? Hollywood Records Group Challenging for #2 in Overall Sales for Year August 13, 2008 Call them the boys of summer. Adding some extra heat to the August dog days. Hollywood’s sizzling Jonas Brothers are poised to top next week’s HITS Album Sales chart, with a total that, as of the moment, looks in the 725k area. That total would put it well in range of the year’s second-best debut, Capitol’s Coldplay with 721k, though it still trails by quite a bit Lil Wayne’s still-dominant first week tally of a million-plus back in June for his Cash Money/Universal Motown album Tha Carter III. There are still a number of variables to consider, though. There are a good number of non-traditional retailers involved, which makes the final number difficult to predict. Also, Hollywood did not make the album available on pre-sale at iTunes, releasing four separate tracks over the month, selling 1.3 million single downloads, all of which could be converted into “complete album” sales. No matter how you slice it, the Jonas Bros’ big week evidences the unmatched power of the Disney multimedia platform. Bob Cavallo’s Disney Music Group has taken full advantage of the parent company’s unique combination of media outlets, including the Disney Channel, Radio Disney and the ABC TV Networks, in launching its string of hits. The synergy between these platforms is responsible in large part for DMG’s healthy current marketshare of nearly 5%. Other titles which hit the street this week include Interscope’s Daddy Yankee, Bad Boy’s Janelle Monet, Epic’s Yung Berg and MTV’s American Mall soundtrack. In all, the market was down 3% vs. last week, down 11% vs. same week last year and still down 11% year-to-date. You may now continue blogging to your favorite Chinese gymnast. Guest nothingfails0603
I am still baffled by the popularity of the Jonas Bros. Ten years ago when it was all about BSB and N'Sync, those artists had widespread airplay and people well outside of their target market knew their songs. With the exception of Perez Hilton (who is obviously on a payroll), I don't know a soul in my age group who likes them.... whereas ten years ago, I knew 30 year olds who went nuts over Backstreet and N'Sync. HolidayGuy
30 year-olds who were nuts over BSB and N Sync? Oy. haha Out of all the teen-pop acts of that time, BSB was the act who saw decent airplay outside the mainstream and rhythmic top 40 formats. BSB did well with a few tracks at Adult Contemporary, for instance. Right now, Jonas Bros. is all about mainstream top 40. "Burnin' Up" is getting light play at rhythmic (though moving in the right direction, at 200+ spins), and it's moving up at Hot AC (472 spins at the moment). HolidayGuy
So close to a top 10 debut for Jonas! Billbosrd made a mention in this week's issue that Madge was the last to score two top 10 debuts on the Hot 100 in a calendar year (since JB also have done it this year). Course, the Hot 100 in 1998 was different than it is now...
Guest nothingfails0603
30 year-olds who were nuts over BSB and N Sync? Oy. haha Out of all the teen-pop acts of that time, BSB was the act who saw decent airplay outside the mainstream and rhythmic top 40 formats. BSB did well with a few tracks at Adult Contemporary, for instance. Right now, Jonas Bros. is all about mainstream top 40. "Burnin' Up" is getting light play at rhythmic (though moving in the right direction, at 200+ spins), and it's moving up at Hot AC (472 spins at the moment). well, the 30 year olds were horny gay men who thought they were sexy, LOL. I knew a lot of then-30ish gay men who were all about Nick Carter, JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake. I don't know anyone who wants any of the Jonas bros like that
thebigham
Ed Sadtler from the 8/23 charts: Full trajectories below. "Hard Candy" falls to No. 110 on the Billboard 200 after 14 weeks in the top 100. "4 Minutes" is removed from the Billboard Hot 100 and Pop 100 after 20 weeks on both charts (songs that have fallen outside the top 50 after 20 or more weeks on the chart are no longer eligible to chart). "4 Minutes" refuses to give up its spot on Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks, moving 40-39 in its 20th week on that chart. "Give It 2 Me" gets a boost on the Hot Singles Sales and Hot Dance Singles Sales charts from the release of the physical maxi-single, but not enough to help it regain a bullet on the Pop 100. It also regains some momentum on the Canadian charts. Guest tassilo3001
1. hi ABBA has never had a top 10 album on the Billboard 200; the Swedish pop act's highest charting set is 1978's "The Album," which peaked at No. At 7.16 million units, sales this week are down 2.7% from last week's sum and down 10.9% from the same week last year. hi are the 33000 copies of abba gold not enough for the hot 200 charts or is gold just counted on the catalog charts??? Lucy Goosie
It's funny that while ABBA Gold is #1 in the UK it is ineligible to be on the US Charts. Kind of similar when Now Thats' What I Call Music is #1 in the US, the British versions are disqualifed in the UK and go on the Comptilations chart. Guest Danny86
How often does it happen that the same act holds the top spot of Sales & Airplay but with 2 different songs? Chart Beat only discusses this: FOURSOME: Rihanna may have started her career with a No. 2 hit ("Pon de Replay" in 2005), but she's made up for it since. This week she earns her fourth chart-topper on the Hot 100, as her 12th chart entry, "Disturbia" (SRP/Def Jam), takes a 3-1 hike. That puts Rihanna into a three-way tie with Mariah Carey and Beyonce as the female artist with the most No. 1 songs on this tally since January 2000. "Disturbia" is the follow-up to "Take a Bow," which occupied the penthouse in May. This is the first time that Rihanna has had back-to-back No. 1 hits, although she did have another chart entry between "Take a Bow" and "Disturbia," when she was listed as a featured artist on Maroon 5's "If I Never See Your Face Again." That title is the only one of Rihanna's 12 chart entries in which she is not the lead artist. Rihanna's other two songs to reach the apex were "SOS" in May 2006 and "Umbrella," which featured Jay-Z, in June 2007. Since "Pon de Replay" entered the Hot 100 the week of June 11, 2005, Rihanna's chart span now stands at three years, two months and two weeks. Guest nothingfails0603
Who would've ever guessed three years ago that Rihanna would become such a chart-topping hitmaker? I remember thinking Pon de Relay was catchy when it was current, and figuring that after that song faded away, she would go the way of Nina Sky and Lumidee
