I'm not saying Ukraine should be excluded from discussing the possibility of being a neutral country, but for that to happen at all it needs to not be used by others as a proxy to exert power. Ukraine should first try to solve the civil war that's been going on on its territory for years. As for the military base, the Sebastopol naval base is roughly 1500 km from Moscow. In 1962, Russia placed missiles in Cuba. That was roughly the same distance from Washington DC. The US found that absolutely unacceptable, therefore the crisis that followed.

Ukraine has the right to live how they want. They are their own country and Russia has no right to dictate anything to them.

Ok. Sure. Let’s fear that Putin invide us. Just like far right in Spain claims that Morocco will invide us. Or European xenophobics fear that Europe will be Muslim in 2075.

Putin HAS invaded Ukraine despite virtually the entire world pleading with him not to.  Yet, I am constantly reading borderline excuses for him and also others ( NOT referring to you ) posting obscure anti Democrat USA links instead.

Don’t mind. It is no use to discuss with these people. They have made up their minds long time ago that evil Russia will “invade” their homes and kidnap their children even if that means World War 3. Putin is the boogymen portrayed by the US press. There is no rational logic behind these thoughts, they do not abide by any reason, even if you present them facts right in the face there is no discussion just bias and hate bandwagon. No complexity, no knowledge of the subject, it is just black and white thinking, good and evil, very simple and very palatable for digest.

Garbage.  People can make up their own minds.  The lecturing from the anti USA brigade on this thread is staggering.

There’s this rumour, spread by Fox news, saying Trudeau is Castro’s son, :rotfl:

Talk about being so fucking idiot !!! :lmao: I laugh, but it’s not funny because every Fox news watchers think this is true,

I detest these morons who live in democratic countries such as Canada, USA and Australia who go out protesting their lack of “freedom” due to a global pandemic and compare their democratic countries unfavourably to China, North Korea and support Putin etc.

Can you imagine what would happen to them if they actually protested in China, North Korea or Russia ?

  5. So ashamed of my country - This has been talked about with people pleading for actions for years.  Australia's precious unique icon is now officially endangered.  Shameful

Koala listed as endangered after Australian governments fail to halt its decline

No recovery plan for the Australian marsupial was in place despite it being identified as a requirement nine years ago

    gettyimages-1304812496-458066268701cf97c

Government officials have declared koalas endangered across much of eastern Australia, citing the impacts of drought, bush fires and habitat loss on the country's dwindling marsupial population. But some conservation groups said the action is too little, too late.

Environment Minister Sussan Ley announced on Friday that she is increasing protection for koalas in New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory by changing their status from vulnerable to endangered. The government is also providing millions of dollars in conservation funding and seeking states' approval for a national recovery plan, she said.

"Together we can ensure a healthy future for the koala and this decision, along with the total [$53 million U.S.] we have committed to koalas since 2019, will play a key role in that process," she said.

The move comes a decade after koala populations in those three regions were first classified as vulnerable, meaning they faced a high risk of extinction in the wild in the medium term. Their endangered status connotes a much more imminent risk.

Without urgent government intervention, New South Wales' koalas would become extinct by 2050, a parliamentary inquiry released in June 2020 found.

The Koala population has seen a dramatic decline

Koala numbers have dropped dramatically in recent years, due to climate-driven weather events and rampant land-clearing for agricultural and urban development. Koala populations in Queensland and New South Wales, for example, were recently found to have decreased by 50% or more in the last two decades.

The deadly bush fires in 2019 and 2020 — which scorched millions of acres over several months — further exacerbated the decline. Some 60,000 koalas were "killed, injured or affected in some way" by the fires, according to a report commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund Australia.

"The bushfires were the final straw," Josey Sharrad, a campaign manager with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said in a statement issued Friday. "This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect critical habitat from development and land-clearing and seriously address the impacts of climate change."

The country lost 30% of its total koala population between 2018 and 2021, according to a report from the Australian Koala Foundation. That loss was particularly stark in New South Wales, which saw a 41% decline.

While the bush fires contributed to the population drop, AKF Chair Deborah Tabart said last year that they were far from the only driver.

"We have witnessed a drastic decrease in inland populations because of drought, heat waves, and lack of water for Koalas to drink," she said. "I have seen some landscapes that look like the moon — with dead and dying trees everywhere."

Land clearing has been a major factor

Land clearing has ramped up in recent decades, with the World Wildlife Fund Australia noting that it has increased 13-fold in New South Wales since the government weakened native vegetation laws in 2016.

Conservation and animal welfare groups have long urged Australia's government to take more action to protect the species.

In April 2020, WWF-Australia, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Humane Society International jointly called on the federal government to reclassify koalas as endangered, saying the move would mobilize funds, spur public support and increase protection for the forests and woodlands that koalas call home.

The Australian government has allocated some funding for koala protection efforts in recent years.

It committed $13 million in 2019 for habitat protection and restoration, health research and medical support and the federal koala monitoring program. And last month, the government announced it would direct another nearly $36 million toward recovery and conservation initiatives over the next four years.

Conservation groups welcome the reclassification but say more action is needed

The three groups welcomed Ley's announcement on Friday but stressed that the status change alone is not enough to save the koalas.

They called on the government to take a stronger stand against deforestation and refocus its efforts on forest protection and restoration, saying its words would be empty without action.

Tabart, with the AKF, called the reclassification "nothing but a token gesture," saying it was "too little, too late" and calling for meaningful legislative change. The organization has long advocated for a Koala Protection Act, which would focus on protecting koala trees from developers.

"A status change is just a word," the AKF tweeted. "It does nothing legally to stop land clearing, which is the key reason for Koalas becoming homeless and then getting sick with disease."

The foundation also criticized the government for choosing not to list koalas as endangered in Victoria and South Australia, saying the decision shows "how out of touch our political leaders are with the current state of the koala."

Sharrad, with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, praised the decision but also described it as a "double-edged sword."

"We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national icon," she said. "If we can't protect an iconic species endemic to Australia, what chance do lesser known but no less important species have?"

  6. It is when Charles becomes King and that will either be if the Queen dies or steps away voluntarily due to ill health.  She is not replacing the Queen herself.  I think it is fair, she is Charles’s wife. Many people don’t want to accept it but she is the woman he loves and they have been married now for years.  I wonder in years to come if people will accept that their love story is true and really has stood the test of time. Unpopular opinion, but I think these two really do love each other deeply. They should of married years back before he met Diana and saved so much heartache for them both and for Diana. All 3 would of been much happier in their lives instead of living out a lie.

He is a national hero. Especially among the right wing supporters. He is very beloved by ALL from all political tendencies but they are the core fans. He’s a bit ambivalent about it too.

Important is that he’s a WONDERFUL tennis player ❤️

His political leanings are never published or commented on here. He just is known as an incredible tennis player and passionate polite sportsman. Australia has an absolute obnoxious brat who gets too much publicity called Nick Kyrgios. When compared to Nadal, he is an embarrassment and Nadal is such a contrast.

With Nadal, It is sad as I never would have thought of him being a right winger.

What an absolute legend! He wins this year's Australian Open, coming from 2 sets to love down and eventually winning in 5 hours 30mins. This gets him to 21 Slam wins (he has won exactly 33% of all Slams he has entered - 21 of 63)

    Vamos!!

I don’t like him much outside the court but he is truly amazing as an sportsman. I am very happy that he won. I know @Jazzy Janlikes him a lot so I’m sure she was thrilled with the match !!!!!

Was so emotional watching that match last night. What an amazing achievement. Now the record holder of having won the most grand slams. His elation was obvious and he always praises and respects his opponents.  I am going to be very tired at work today.

    I'm so angry and disappointed.

He was such a good representation for our country. We are usually just known for bad stuff (cough* wars *cough).

I'm shocked how all this turned out I really thought he was smarter than that. And our president is such a joke saying he was tortured in Australia. Seriously???

Ugh, no wonder I have no connection to my family there anymore.....

Don't worry xx  He will always be a fantastic tennis player and one of the greatest players ever.  Every country has the same problem with their superstars. .  Australia has some absolute moronic stupid tennis players.  Don't feel too disappointed.

For 48 hours it truly felt like a 9/11 type moment. We all were watching the same horrific images on screen and for the first time in a LONG time we were collectively horrified as a nation.

Then the Trump propaganda machine kicked into overdrive. And his minions got out there to deflect, blame, and shrug their shoulders.

I don’t believe this country is able to come together for anything anymore. If NYC got nuked tomorrow, it’d be politicized within a couple days. If a god damn pandemic and something as simple as wearing  a fucking mask is controversial & political, well, there’s just no hope anymore.

This sounds so bleak and helpless, yet it's so very true.

I honestly don't know what it will be to finally tip this over the edge, but I feel like it's not in the too terribly distant future. We've been able to withstand a lot as a nation over the past nearly 250 years but this current assault on truth and facts to the degree that it is thanks in large part to social media, is just something I just don't think we'll be able to overcome. It's not that we just disagree on issues, we live in two completely separate realities.

Seeing the people throwing hissy fits over masks, saying with a straight face COVID isn't real....or is just a "flu" and how short sighted people seem to be about 1/6 has just been really really disheartening to me. As horrible as it was 2016-2019, 2020 and 2021 have been so eye opening at just how SICK we are as a nation....literally and figuratively.

Agree with both of you. I truly thought the whole of America would of been so horrified by the sickening events last year which were shown everywhere. I really thought it would bring America together in disgust at the heinous attack on their country’s democracy. Yet, more and more I see crazy far right conspiracy theorists who deny facts and science gaining popularity and support.  It is extremely frightening and so hard to understand. It is if human intelligence is receding and we are heading back to barbarism.

I guess this is the problem when issues are boiled down to culture wars. So incredibly toxic while real and important issues like healthcare, education, wealth inequality and the climate get pushed aside for yet another election cycle.

I'm not American but I love visiting and it’s terrifying watching their system unravel. It’s been a long time coming and is far more complex than my post obviously. Sadly similar situations can be seen in the UK and Australia - coincidently where the poisonous hand of Murdoch media has also been gaslighting people for decades.

50+1 is a pretty blunt assessment but ultimately you’re right. Enacting real change though requires so much more but there are very few politicians willing to walk the walk when it comes to long term vision.

I have stopped watching coverage of USA politics. Too frustrating and frightening. So many far right, conspiracy theorists in the Republican Party who seem to dominate and have so much to say. Fox News etc encourage them completely too. Totally lost faith when seeing so many Americans STILL idolising Trump, complaining violently about their lack of freedom re anyone even dare ask them to wear masks, denying science and covid and thinking the election was stolen.  How Ted Cruz, Marjorie Taylor Green and co have massive support as well is terrifying.  I know it is not the majority of Americans but there seems to be so many of them. Their democracy ( which has always been a wonderful part of America and what they were rightly proud of ) could easily be taken away if these conspiracy theorists get too much power again.

    Hilarious

And Djoker is such an asshole. Everything about this whole thing STINKS. It is soo lucky that he tested positive for covid on Dec 16 (passed the exemption submission deadline of Dec 10 but who cares about that). If he hadn't tested positive for covid, what exactly was his plan for coming? Why did he apply for an exemption in November if he didn't have any grounds for getting it then????

To me, the worst offender in all this is Craig Tiley and Tennis Australia, who were told repeatedly that prior covid infection was not grounds for an exemption for a visa, but went ahead and used that as the grounds for the Djoker's exemption anyway. How has Tiley not been fired?????????

Agree totally. Tennis Australia and Craig Tilley have been helping him despite that the state government of Victoria and the Federal government had been saying - no unvaccinated international players could compete. Tennis Australia even gave him the paperwork meant for Australians who might have legitimate medical exemptions. I have no respect for Tennis Australia who bent over backwards to help him play in the Australian open.
