Django Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 The Radio Academy@radioacademy R1 has moved on from Madonna now. Vast majority of her fans over 30, not R1 audience, @GeorgErgatoudis #RAMusic https://twitter.com/radioacademy/statuses/435495285976858624 It's this true? What kind of stupidity and discrimination is this? Not only towards Madonna but also towards people over 30.
Shine Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 They do that with all artists whose main audience is over 30.
Nonoka Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 What kind of stupidity and discrimination is this? Not only towards Madonna but also towards people over 30. It's called ageism.
Django Posted February 19, 2014 Author Posted February 19, 2014 I just turned 24. I know many people whose age is the same as me or less who are her fans or at least like her music. This is absolutely disgusting. And people over 30 have the right to listen to the music they like. Bullshit. It should be illegal. How would it sound if they stopped playing artists who are black, or non british (in this case) or not taller than a certain height, or ugly? This is about music and nothing else.
Mat.Guy Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I thought the last radio listeners were over 30...
MerGirl Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 What a stupid statement. Even if they feel it's true, it's stupid as fuck to make such a statement. Did they make statements like this about other artists? I assume they didn't. Why is Madonna the only one getting these ageist remarks? I will send them an angry email.
Guest Rachelle of London Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 As I've previously stated R1 is crap. Their listeners are dropping. R2 gets almost double the amount of listeners than R1 and they play Madonna daily. They even played songs off of MDNA. Seriously, the fact that R1 isn't playing Madonna is a good thing. The crap they play is worthy enough for them.

No Madonna isn't the only artist they've done this to. They were also in trouble a few years ago because part of their rebranding was to remove all the older DJs and replace them with younger ones. They done that and those DJs took their audiences with them to other radio stations. With capital FM going national and the Heart radio stations growing, R1 is in dire need. Let them keep Little Mix and One Direction. Madonna doesn't need R1 at all

I feel like that was mean and over the top.

I feel like that was mean and over the top. They've done the same to people like Paul McCartney. R1 is known for being ageist especially after their rebranding which caused a huge controversy over here. One of their DJs tweeted something nasty about Madonna when the tour was in London. It's nothing new, but what makes me laugh is that they are pampering to the ideas of what teenagers want, when realistically they just make themselves look lame and cringe.

You're not playing certain artists because they are too OLD? These statements are cringeworthy. I know little flopsters are going to run with this though, just wait.
Guest animalinstinct Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Radio 1's 'target audience' is teens and the music reflects that. I think Robbie Williams had a similar problem getting played by Radio 1 too and also Kylie Minogue, so it's not just Madonna that's being discriminated against. Somebody said earlier that more people listen to Radio 2 now anyway, who play Madonna regularly, so no loss really. Also, most people stream music now.
Mistachristopha Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 In the US, your music not gettin played on radio is a good thing because radio is shit here, lol

I know little flopsters are going to run with this though, just wait. It is truly disgusting. It's not working for them anyway, their listening figures are at an all time low. Ugh lil monsters can go away. Little retards hahahap

Didn't they also refuse to play Take That when they got back together, and only played them once their comeback was successful. It's shocking but they're flopping anyway.
nimos Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Yes Radio 1's popularity is definitely dropping. They've alienated a lot of people with the rebranding. And I think 30 is a strange cut-off age, especially nowadays when people are living longer and settling down later.
Titty Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 It's understandable that Madonna would not get on the playlist, their demographic is the 15-25 age group, and lends face it, most kids that age do not want to listen to Madonna. Radio 1 is a great station, and I still listen to some of their specialist shows (I'm in my late 30s). Unfortunately Madonna is now seen as a Radio 2 artist, which is great for her as it's a massive station, bad for us as the rest of their playlists are dreadful. If only she would get played on 6 music....

Pabl0114 Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 How many radio stations y'all got over there?
Guest Rachelle of London Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 How many radio stations y'all got over there? Not including pirates we have quite a few national ones, for the mainstream pop genres we have. Radio 1 Radio 2 Heart Galaxy Capital Magic Magic and Heart playlists are usually more older music so they ' ll play 80s, 90s and. 00s Madonna. But saying that Heart really loved Masterpiece, it was on a lot during MDNA era.
Guest Xanthium Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 In this day and age, who even listens to the radio?! Do they also watch VHS tapes on their black and white TV?
Guest Rachelle of London Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 A lot of people still listen to the radio at work, in the car, and at home. I always listen to and from work because of the travel updates. Obviously more people are now streaming but radio is still a big factor in music promotion.
Mistachristopha Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 In this day and age, who even listens to the radio?! Do they also watch VHS tapes on their black and white TV? exactly, lol. i ditched US radio when howard stern left
Guest Xanthium Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I honestly haven't listened to the radio in over a decade. Maybe more. It just seems so pointless when you can listen to CDs or hook up your iPod in your car. If I could listen to music at work I'd just put my iPod on shuffle.
Guest Rachelle of London Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 US radio is crap though. I would understand you guys not listening. I'm an avid talk radio listener, but sometimes I love tuning into Radio 2. The other night they were playing a Madonna megamix. It was epic.

I just googled Nick Grimshaw's age and he is born in 1984? WTF He looks older tbh
BrokenButterfly Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Well, Spotify, Pandora, Grooveshark and Beats Music sure are a thing.
Guest Rachelle of London Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Nick Grimshaw is way older than that! No way is he 29!!!!! He's been around for a long time too.
Guest animalinstinct Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Nick Grimshaw is way older than that! No way is he 29!!!!! He's been around for a long time too. so that gives him another year till he's also passed-it! Judging by his Breakfast Show's dropping listeners though, he'll be lucky if he lasts that long and moved to Radio 2, where he will be FORCED to play Madonna

Have you guys seen that creature that they've replaced Tim Westwood for. I never thought I'd say this but even Tim isn't that lame. I love Tim though. He's always shown respect for Madonna despite being a hip hop DJ. When 4 minutes came out he always opened his show with it. And when he got to pimp her ride for the sorry video
