Madonna to lay school's foundation stone in Malawi

LILONGWE, October 22 (Reuters Life!) - U.S. pop star Madonna will visit Malawi on Sunday to lay the foundation stone of a multi-million dollar girls' school she is building, her charity Raising Malawi told Reuters.

The singer, who has adopted two children from the southern African country, is due to arrive on Sunday and attend a brick-laying ceremony in Lilongwe on Monday. The school is expected to cost about $15 million.

"She plans to meet the President Bingu wa Mutharika and together lay a foundation stone for her multi-million dollar girls school," a staffer at the charity, who declined to be named, said on Thursday.

An AIDS epidemic has left over a million children orphaned in the impoverished country of 13 million.

Malawi's government came under fire after Madonna adopted a 13-month-old boy, David Banda, in 2006, with critics accusing it of giving her special treatment by skirting laws that ban non-residents from adopting children.

I have been up since 800 am searching for photos no official or pap photos what gives and ALSO BREAKING NEWS:

Madonna To Meet Mercy's Biological Father in Malawi

During her trip to Malawi to establish a $15 million school, Madonna plans to meet 3-year-old adopted daughter Mercy's father.

A source close to the pop star, 51, tells Usmagazine.com that she will meet 24-year-old James Kambewa -- who currently works odd jobs including serving as a night guard -- for the first time during her humanitarian trip to the African nation.

"Madonna wants to meet Mr. Kambewa because she does not want to deny Mercy her background," a source tells Us. "Madonna wants to assure Mr. Kambewa that Mercy will not be delinked from her roots."

Still, another family member of Mercy's isn't happy with the pop star's plan.

Mercy's uncle, Peter Baneti, tells Us that her family in Malawi doesn't approve of the meeting because Kambewa has only claimed paternity of Mercy after news of the adoption first emerged in April.

"We do not recognize Kambewa as Mercy's father," Baneti tells Us. "He just came out of the woodwork to claim paternity while he was not there when my sister was pregnant."

Madonna's four children -- including 12-year-old daughter Lourdes, son Rocco, 8, Mercy and David Banda, 4, who was adopted from Malawi in 2006 -- accompanied her on the trip.

In addition to the private meeting with Kambewa, Madonna will host a ceremony Monday for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls. The school, which will be located near the capital city of Lilongwe, will establish "a leadership institution that will prepare future women leaders committed to the vision of a better Malawi through academic excellence and leadership training," a source tells Us.

Madonna will also spend the trip meeting with President Bingu wa Mutharika, who will likely grant her honorary citizenship. The singer then plans to visit the six orphanages -- which house more than 25,000 children -- she is funding through Raising Malawi.

Madonna visiting Malawi to launch school

(CNN) -- Pop star Madonna plans to help break ground in Malawi on Monday for a school she is building in the impoverished southern African nation, from which she adopted two children.

The school -- Raising Malawi Academy for Girls -- will focus on empowering women to become leaders, the singer said on a Web site run by her charity. It will be built in the capital, Lilongwe.

"Our goal is to teach them to challenge themselves, serve their local communities and develop their country," she said. " ... Research proves that young girls throughout the developing world are often left without opportunities to receive a comprehensive education."

Madonna, 51, said her four children accompanied her on the trip -- including two adopted from the country. David Banda, 4, was adopted in 2006 and Chifundo "Mercy" James, 3, earlier this year.

Mercy's adoption petition in April was mired in controversy. A judge at first rejected the application, based on a minimum residency required for foreigners who adopt. The rejection followed criticism by human rights activists, who said the singer was using her fame to circumvent the law.

The singer appealed the decision, and Malawi's high court ruled in her favor in June, clearing the adoption. The residency condition was waived in 2006, when Madonna adopted David.

The singer has been involved with Malawi for several years and made a documentary, "I Am Because We Are," to highlight poverty, AIDS and other diseases devastating children in the country. She also co-founded the nonprofit Raising Malawi, which helps feed, educate and provide medical care for the needy.

The nation of about 13 million is one of the poorest in the world.

Wow! I'm suprised this message from Madonna,

on madonna.com was missed yesterday!

If I had realized I would've posted then. Sorry I didn't.

Message From Madonna – On Her Way To Malawi

My family and I are on our way to Malawi to attend the ground breaking ceremony for Raising Malawi Academy for Girls.

The ceremony will take place on Monday, October 26 at 3:00 p.m. on the future site of the Academy. Our vision for the school is to empower girls to become MalawiÂ’s future leaders. Our goal is to teach them to challenge themselves, serve their local communities and develop their country.

We created this vision in partnership with the local Malawian Ministry of Education, and other educational experts from Malawi, Sub-Sharan African and elsewhere around the world. We are developing and using innovative educational approaches, cutting-edge architectural design methods, and other modern technologies, which we hope, will become a replicable model for girls secondary school education.Research proves that young girls throughout the developing world are often left without opportunities to receive a comprehensive education and the benefits that education can provide.

ItÂ’s an honor for me to be able to help as many of these girls as I can achieve their dreams.IÂ’m also incredibly proud of all the projects Raising Malawi is involved in and I look forward to visiting a number of them during my visit.

Madonna plants tree to launch Malawi girls school

By RAPHAEL TENTHANI, Associated Press Writer

LILONGWE, Malawi – Madonna marked the start of construction of her school for girls in Malawi on Monday by planting a tree at the planned site of the $15 million school.

The 51-year-old celebrity arrived in the impoverished southern African country on Sunday accompanied by her four children — daughters Lourdes and Mercy, and sons Rocco and David.

Madonna adopted Mercy from Malawi earlier this year and adopted David from the country in 2008.

The singer was dressed in a dark summer dress and a colorful shawl during Monday's ceremony in the town of Chinkhota, some six miles (10 kilometers) from the capital, Lilongwe. Together with eldest daughter Lourdes she planted a Moringa tree, a hardy tree with edible leaves.

"If this school is a success — with God-willing it will be — we will replicate it not only in Malawi but in other parts of the world as well," she said.

The new school will be called the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls and will open by 2011 and educate 500 students, said its future principal, Anjimile Mtila-Opponyo. It will be similar to the school built by talk show host Oprah Winfrey in South Africa.

Mtila-Opponyo said the curriculum will emphasize science and mathematics.

"Madonna did not accept that Malawian women would not study science to become doctors," she said.

The singer told some 1,000 gathered villagers she was inspired by the strength of Malawian girls and women.

"In all my travels, investigations and conversations the most recurring thing is how amazing Malawian women are, both young and old, how industrious they are and how much they deserve to be educated," she said.

Madonna's Raising Malawi, a charity founded in 2006 when she first visited the country, helps feed, educate and provide medical care for some of Malawi's orphans.

Malawi, a nation of 12 million, is one of the poorest countries in the world. About 500,000 children have lost a parent to AIDS.

Madonna will also meet with President Bingu wa Mutharika on Tuesday and visit some of the orphanages her charity supports.
