HITS:

SUGARLAND VS. MILEY: It promises to be a knockdown, drag-out battle for the top spot on next week’s HITS Album sales chart between Mercury Nashville’s Sugarland and Hollywood’s Miley Cyrus, both with around 145-155k. Sure looks like the strategy to debut with the “deluxe fan edition” and then follow up with the regularly priced version was a successful one for Universal Nashville honcho Luke Lewis and the band.

Decca’s Mamma Mia! soundtrack continues strong, at #3 with 115-125k, followed by Atlantic’s Kid Rock at 80-85k. Cash Money/Universal Motown’s Lil Wayne and Capitol’s Coldplay are both in the 70-75k range, with Disney’s Camp Rock at 55-60k. Provident/Reunion (through SBMG) Christian rockers Third Day are the week’s top debut with 45-50k, followed by another newcomer in Razor & Tie franchise Kidz Bop 14 and Def Jam/Columbia’s Nas, both looking like 40-45k. Sugarland's Sweet Success

August 06, 2008

Sugarland may have had to wait a little bit, but that doesn't make its No. 1 achievement any less sweet. The band's "Love on the Inside" rises from No. 2 to No. 1 in its second week on the Billboard 200, giving the duo its first chart-topper . . . Last week's No. 1, Miley Cyrus' "Breakout," slips to the runner-up slot . . . Third Day grabs its best sales week and highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 with the No. 6 arrival of "Revelation," and the latest Kidz Bop album starts in the top 10 . . . In other news, we've got tidbits on Scars on Broadway, Rick Springfield, Alice Cooper and more.

FLASH POINTS

• So it had to wait a week to have a No. 1. Big deal. Sugarland celebrates its first chart-topper on the Billboard 200 as "Love on the Inside" rises to the top slot in its second week on the list. This week the album sells 171,000 (down 45% from its 314,000 start), beating out last week's No. 1, Miley Cyrus' "Breakout" (163,000; down 56% from its 371,000 debut).

• Sugarland took the unusual step of releasing the deluxe edition of "Love on the Inside" a week before the standard version arrived. (The deluxe edition came with five additional songs.) Sales of both versions are merged together in Nielsen SoundScan's database and on Billboard's charts. Traditionally, if a deluxe edition of an album is released (may it be with additional songs, or a DVD, or what have you), it either comes out on the same day as the standard edition or it arrives months after the initial album dropped.

• Third Day claims its highest-charting album and best sales week as "Revelation" bows at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 with 75,000. It also lands at No. 1 on the Top Christian Albums chart -- the act's fourth No. 1 there . . . Previously, the group's best sales week and rank on the Billboard 200 came when "Wherever You Are" debuted and peaked at No. 8 in 2005 with 63,000. The band played "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" last Tuesday (July 29), no doubt helping the new album's handsome sales.

• At No. 8 on the Billboard 200, "Kidz Bop 14" starts with 58,000. It is the eighth consecutive top 10 debut for the regular "Bop" series, discounting its holiday and "Gold" titles. The collected "Kidz" albums -- including all of their assorted permutations -- have moved 8.4 million in the United States.

• Scars on Broadway debuts with its self-titled album at No. 17 on the Billboard 200, shifting 24,000. The band boasts one-half of System of a Down, which saw another of its members -- Serj Tankian -- land at No. 4 earlier this year with his own solo effort, "Elect the Dead."

• Rick Springfield charges in at No. 28 on the Billboard 200 with "Venus in Overdrive," giving the singer his best debut as well as his highest-charting album since 1985's "Tao" went to No. 21. "Overdrive" starts with 16,000 -- Springfield's best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991 -- likely thanks in part to his tour of the morning talk shows last week. He played "Live With Regis and Kelly," "Good Morning America" and "The Early Show."

• Speaking of veteran rock artists, Alice Cooper bows at No. 53 with his new concept album, "Along Came a Spider," selling 10,000 -- his highest sales week since 1994. The set, which includes guest turns from Slash and Ozzy Osbourne, is also Cooper's highest-charting album since "Hey Stoopid" debuted and peaked at No. 47 in 1991.

MARKET WATCH

• Album units, current chart week: 7.35 million units

• DOWN 6.2% from last issue's charts: 7.84 million units

• DOWN 11.1% from same week, 2007: 8.27 million units

• This week: The top three albums each sell more than 100,000 copies.

• This week last year on the Billboard 200: Common landed at No. 1 with "Finding Forever," shifting 155,000, and Korn's "Untitled" started at No. 2 (123,000). The top three albums each sold more than 100,000.

BORDERLINES

• The No. 20 album this week, Duffy's "Rockferry" (Mercury/IDJMG), sold 21,000.

• The No. 20 album for the same week of 2007, Michael Buble's "Call Me Irresponsible" (143/Reprise/Warner Bros.), sold 27,000.

• Average total of the No. 20 album for the same week of the year during the past 10 years (1999-2008): 42,188.

PROGRESS REPORTS

• A smattering of $7.99 Best Buy sale tags aid Duffy's "Rockferry" (No. 20, up 6%), Flobots' "Fight With Tools" (No. 36, up 7%), Jordin Sparks' self-titled album (No. 69, up 22%) and Lyfe Jennings' "Lyfe Change" (No. 150, up 7%) . . . The Ting Tings' performance on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" (July 28) and an appearance on MTV's "TRL" (July 30) helps the act's set rise 162-134 with an 11% increase.

• At No. 158, singer-turned-fashion designer Sheryl Crow sees her "Detours" album kick up the chart with an 8% increase thanks to her Aug. 1 "Today" performance. She recently launched her own clothing line called Bootheel Trading Co. A limited selection of the line is currently available at Dillard's, while the full range will hit retailers later this year ... A couple steps down the list, at No. 168, is We the Kings' self-titled set, which grabs a 10% gain. Continued growth at radio for the band's single "Check Yes Juliet," along with road work on the Vans Warped tour, help push the album up.

• Sugarland scores its third No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart as "All I Want to Do" steps 2-1 in its 11th chart week. It's the duo's fastest trip to the top, besting the 19 weeks it took "Settlin'" to reach No. 1 on the May 11, 2007, chart. Its first chart-topper, "Want To," capped the survey in its 22nd week on the Dec. 15, 2006, chart.

A LOOK AHEAD

• Among the titles released this week, due on next week's charts: the standard edition of Conor Oberst's self-titled set, Lloyd's "Lessons in Love," Randy Newman's "Harps and Angels" and Trapt's "Only Through the Pain."

• Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2007 when: UGK bowed atop the list, selling 160,000 of its "Underground Kingz" set. In second place was the arrival of Plies' "Real Testament," shifting 96,000. At No. 5, Jonas Brothers' self-titled sophomore effort started with 69,000. The previous week's No. 1, Common's "Finding Forever," slipped to No. 7 with 58,000 (down 63% in its second week). Only the No. 1 album sold more than 100,000.

Wonder if IDJ/Mimi will rush out some sort of "Download-the-song-and-win-a-vacation-with-Mariah" promotion. :p

Actually, she may have found that there are more important things than Hot 100 peaks, with her newfound love and all.

true, maybe Mariah is finally off her chart fixation. Considering Migrate is the easiest hit she could have off this album, and she's releasing Loving You Long Time instead

Yeah, maybe if it had been the second single, but any momentum probably is gone right now. Plus, T.I. is kinda overexposed, no?

She's unlikely to have a hit score higher airplay than "Bye Bye" with anything else from the album, barring a re-release with previously unreleased tracks.

 to MIA on her first Top 20 hit. Top 10 for sure next week, a great beart.

And :dramatic: at 25% of the Top 20 being made up of British acts (Coldplay, MIA, Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, Estelle...)

it's nice to see the music industry changing. Right now, it seems like most of the popular r&b is pop/dance hybrids (Rihanna, Chris Brown) and British artists are starting to kick ass again (whereas for the longest time, British artists couldn't be caught dead in the states because of a pointless grudge that programmers held against them because of Spice Girls), and not only that, I Kissed A Girl is #1 for the seventh consecutive week, I think that's the longest #1 since "Smooth" that had absolutely zero urban/hip hop crossover appeal. The fans have spoken, pop, rock and GOOD r&b is back :)

I don't think it's a matter of holding a grudge because of the Spice Girls. If the music connects, with the audience/radio, then it will get through, regardless of whether the act is American, British, whatever. Plus, British acts can score, even if they don't score huge radio hits- look at Coldplay- been selling pretty well for some time now.
