Janet is doing great

I do love Janet and the Discipline album, but don't kid yourself, 388k in three months is dismal, All For You and Damita Jo (which was her first real disappointment) outsold that the first week out.

Well what do you guys expect? Record sales are at an all time low right now, at least "Discipline" is in the top 200 after almost 4 months on the chart. It could be a lot worse, she could do Donna Summer numbers and only sell 22,000 , j/k, I love Donna too, but Janet is doing well and "Feedback" was her biggest song in years.

yes album sales are down, but 500k is still attainable. Discipline has only sold about 55% of what 20 Y.O. sold not even a year and a half ago, and 20 Y.O. was regarded as a flop too.

Yea, Janet is doing well stateside compared to Ashlee Simpson and Kylie Minogue, but for a major female artist, sales are way below expectations. Celine and Britney's albums are both referred to as flops yet both are at 900k, and Madonna's already at 500k and Mariah is already closing in on a million. 388k and down to 3000 copies a week is very dismal for someone as well-known as Janet.

You can't even compare Donna or Cyndi's albums with Janet, neither of them have been A-listers for 20 years and they also have far less appeal to the younger ($$$$) market than Janet does. Neither are expected to be like Janet, who is supposed to still be A-list.

I'd say the major divas look something like this:

1 Mariah Carey

After being down and out with Glitter and Charmbracelet, she managed the most impressive comeback of any artist in quite some time. In the weakest sales era of the past several decades, she still managed the biggest opening of her career. Still, E=MC2 won't reach Emancipation levels.

2 Madonna

She bounced back nicely from American Life and has her biggest radio hit in 8 years right now, and the album has stayed in the top ten for quite some time. That said, it is also barely selling above American Life, and will most likely go down as her second-least successful studio album in terms of sales.

3 Celine Dion

Certainly not doing huge numbers, but she has hung on fairly well and her last album sold a million copies. She's not a radio star like she was in the mid-90s, but then again, she was never quite on the same level as some of the other divas.

4 Janet Jackson

3 strikes and you're out. It seems like every diva was having difficulties in the early 00s, but both Mariah and Madonna bounced back -- Janet didn't, and has seen declining results for her last 3 albums. "Feedback" was a bigger hit than anything from the past two discs but it's clear Janet is no longer a chart force and barring a shocking comeback won't retain her 80s/90s glory.

5 Whitney Houston

Where'd she go? She's been M.I.A. for several years and everything since "My Love is Your Love" has been disappointing. Rumors about a back-in-form comeback have been swirling for some time but they've yet to materialize.

Um. if were talking about the USA like nobody else matter... Mariah won the album sales and Madonna got the bigger single sales wise.

If were talking the planet Madonna won hands down

So Madonna could very well spend another week in the top 10 or close to it. Can we stop freakin out about its sales now? Its doing really well. Sure it didnt get the MEGA HUGE opening that alot of us predicted including myself but its holding on really well. I think that would have to do with the album having good word of mouth at this point since 4 Minutes has reached its impact peak and there is no promo going on right now.

Maybe 5 weeks in the top 10? What a backlash!!!!

When we compare this with the currents charts , I have an uneasy feeling ; like the continuation of more than 15 yerars domination of Urban unhealthy black acts :thumbsdown:

look at what some local lobbying has done to music, radio and tv in the us ... pathetic

Bring me back the 80's

why this song was never wildly nominated for grammys and the oscar is bewildering...

lyrically, it's intense and personal... musically, it's sthg madonna has done very differently at that time

Janet is doing great

No,she isn't :) 'Discipline' is officially her *THIRD* flop album in a row.Her biggest problem is that she keeps repeating the same mistake over and over.....releasing similiar-sounding albums, even though the previous one(s) failed.By now,she should realize that the public just isn't interested in what she's offering. At least with Madonna,we get a different-sounding album each time.

If Janet does this same routine again (releasing a run-of-the-mill R&B album),she will see the same results.

I diagree with the order. Janet should be last on the list and it's all her fault. She didn't do anything to protect her lagacy after the super bowl fiasco and let others screw with her career and her music. She doesn't seem to care and pretty much behaves like retarded at all her public appearances and interviews.

Whithey we can't categorize her just yet. After My Love Is Your Love she had only one unsuccessfull record (that was her first and only flop) and she is a legend even if she doesn't release any more records. What would make or break her is the success or not of a new record - not her personal life. For the time being she's better off without a new CD.
