I didn't say one was better!!! Just that one was more FAMOUS in certain years. It's undeniable that Michael was more famous in '87 - '88 especially with that Bad Tour which was at that time the highest grossing solo tour EVER, and Madonna in '89 - '90. When Madonna came out with LAP, I believe it outsold Bad? Different years, they avoided one-another because they both KNEW.
-
She did kinda eclipse him in the end of the 80's. By a hair. But she did.
Remember, MTV gave her the artist of the decade, didn't they? And he called her a hefer or something like that.
Well, LAP was her huge feat, and it was released in 1989. The last MJ album of the '80s was Bad - so she obviously got everything in 1989 while he got it in 1987.
-
Well of course she had her eye on Michael, look at the time period...everyone did. And I said I LOVE "Burning Up" but I don't think it's Madge at the top of hers. "Billie Jean" is Michael around the top of his, it's just everything. So iconic for MTV at that time.
since '98? try '84.What levels were they on in the '80s?
-
no, you dont compare the performance you compare the videos by the same director:
bliie jean - vs - burning up
i take burning up ANYDAY!!!

WHAAAT, I was just making an observation.
"Burning Up" IS pretty good, love the closeups...but I'll have to side with the illuminating tiles.
-
hey one ill give you is leave me alone> thats a great video.
It is! Same with "Billie Jean," it was cool enough for MADONNA to perform it even.
-
Yeah, I can see that by the CAPS. Tks, minority.
-
I don't think acting is either's top specialty, but how I do LOVE DSS. I only watched that 5 months ago.
-
You're still bringing examples up despite the fact that you said it's all "taste" and whatever you prefer. It's done, we feel differently. I love both artists for their different fortés.
-
well, call us Madonna loons all you want but youre a jacko loon. so be it.
again, it all just boils down to do you want to go see DIE HARD or BETTY BLUE?
I'm a MADONNA loon. 1000+ posts later at MadonnaNation.com. I didn't mean it insultingly, I'm one of you. I'm a Jacko loon, too I guess, they both have been integral parts of my life. The two best.
-
I knew you loons would slaughter me for this one.
Puddy, you're comparing specific moments to specific moments? I could make it sound great in Michael's favour too. To say he's cool-less, though, damn.
YES, some of Madge's videos ARE iconic, I NEVER denied that.
-
Also, if we really need to compare, then Madonna's "Bedtime Story" is a proper one to be put against "Scream", done in the same year, directed by the same person. So, MadFan, how is "Scream" objectively light years above "Bedtime Story"?
I never even brought "Bedtime Story" into the conversation, in fact I never even compared "Scream" to ANY Madonna video. ...I said it was technologically advanced for 1995.
-
not jackosjoint.com.
I don't even want to debate this anymore, all I'm saying is that Michael Jackson is known more for making iconic (not necessarily good - that is, like Pud said, taste) videos while Madonna is known more for consistently good albums yet managing to reinvent herself.

I must have missed the part where I said "it NEVER happened prior." I said it wasn't popular, which it wasn't. Besides, you can see in that one the actual screen image changes. It's not the same. In "Black or White," each face literally morphs into another, watch it and you'll see. Hair spurts and all.
-
Right...which is the REPETITION OF A PREMISE (or lack thereof). Which is all I said.
-
Where does Michael chase a girl in "Bad"? Or "Beat It"? Or "Smooth Criminal"? Nowhere to be found in any of those. In fact, all three have totally different premises. "Black or White" is very technologically advanced, especially at the end with the morphing faces - that wasn't exactly popular at the time. The dancing in the extended version is fantastic too. "Scream", well that speaks for itself. SO advanced for 1995. "You Rock My World" is indeed garbage, I didn't list it for that reason.
I know this is a Madonna board but I was hoping a little more objectivity would be found. You really can't deny Michael's video legacy - the rest of the world doesn't, he may be a "dirty child molester" but you don't see many trashing his videos. Like I said, love Madge of course, but many of her videos are garbage. Talk about repeating premises, how many times did she dance purposelessly with two dancers behind her? That's not *even* a premise. It was Michael's forté, hers is the consistent output of great albums.
P.S. As far as "Jam" goes, ehhh...not so much "iconic", I revoke that.
-
NO, NO, NO AND NO.
michael wished he had a like a prayer, express yourself - hell even a la isla.
im sorry of the ones you named i can really only say thriller is any good.
"Smooth Criminal" isn't any good? "Black or White" isn't any good? Jesus, even "Scream" - so much more advanced than ANYTHING before it, most expensive video ever made and it shows. Puddy, love of my life, come now... You may not like Michael as much as Madge, of course I understand that, but put the bias aside. He was the KING of music videos, iconic video after iconic video whether or not you think they're good, they are still so remembered. Love LAP and EY, but they don't even compete, especially in 1983 when she was doing "Lucky Star" and he was doing "Thriller".
-
I think MJ is overrated in videos, Thriller was great cuz it was so cinematic & epic but he never went beyond those elements, Madonna owns Video she used it as a true art form
Come on, "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Billie Jean," "Beat It," "Thriller," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Dirty Diana," "Smooth Criminal," "Black or White," "Remember the Time," "In the Closet," "Jam" and "Scream" are ALL iconic videos, even today. Obviously love Madonna, but Michael puts her to the ground and nails her coffin SHUT if we're talking music videos/short films. He truly redefined the term. Let's be objective here.
-
I can't BELIEVE she was set to perform with Michael. God that would have been fucking epic, I can't believe it.
-
Madonna is not alone,,, she still has britney
:lmao:
-
Yeah, people always say she used to dislike him...so untrue.
This quote was aired on the news:
The moment that never happened: A month ago Madonna told me she wanted to do a surprise performance at one of Michael Jackson's U.K. shows.

But if we're talking PURE success, the Bad Tour outsold The WTG tour by a longshot, and was the highest grossing tour by a solo artist EVER. Seriously, this is so ridiculous - it's absurd to think that one ruled the '80s while the other didn't. Look at their awards, really. One didn't "longshot" another, end of. When you think of the '80s, you think of ALL these iconic things, so you're wrong.
