Trump Nobel Peace Prize nomination probed amid fakery concerns
    4 hours ago

A nomination made for US President Donald Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize was potentially fraudulent, according to the awarding committee.

The Norwegian committee has filed a report with police over its concerns.

Mr Trump was reportedly nominated for his "ideology of peace by force" by an anonymous American.

The director of the Nobel Institute said there were concerns that Mr Trump's nomination may have been falsified.

"I can say that we have good reason to believe that [the nomination of Mr Trump] is a fake," Nobel Institute Director Olav Njølstad told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

"The same 'fake' nomination probably took place last year too," Mr Njølstad said.

Nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize must be submitted by 31 January each year; the winner will be announced in early October.

The process for nominating candidates is highly restricted.

Those who are entitled to propose candidates for the prize include members of parliament and government, former laureates and some university professors.

In 2009, only a year into his term of office, US President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

In 2012, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the European Union for transforming Europe "from a continent of war to a continent of peace".

The 2017 edition of the prize was won by the anti-nuclear weapons group International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.

Who knows maybe it's genuine after all? :1251:

Maybe the director of Nobel Institute was having the "WTF" moment :manson: when he received the nomination and couldn't believe someone actually feels that Trump deserve it!?   :manson:

  2. Peter Wang was formally recognized for his actions during the shooting in several ways. At the federal level, Wang was awarded the ROTC Medal for Heroism by the U.S. Army.

He was also posthumously admitted to the United States Military Academy for the class of 2025, a "very rare" act.

In addition, the state of Florida honored Wang by ordering the Florida National Guard to attend his funeral. In regards to their decision to posthumously admit Wang, the U.S. Military Academy stated that, "It was an appropriate way for USMA to honor this brave young man."

A junior cadet who died helping other students escape a Florida school shooting has been posthumously accepted into a prestigious US military school.

Peter Wang, 15, one of 17 killed in the 14 February attack, was admitted to the class of 2025 at his dream school, West Point Academy.

He was a member of the US Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC), a school programme for potential US military officers.

His funeral took place on Tuesday.

The school will confer a letter of admission and honorarium tokens to his family, local West Point alumnus Chad Maxey told the Sun Sentinel newspaper.

Florida Governor Rick Scott also reportedly directed the state's National Guard to honour Peter and two other members of the JROTC at their funerals.

The US Army bestowed the Medal of Heroism on three students who were killed, including Peter, according to US media.

The Cadet Command also approved Junior ROTC Heroism Medals for 14-year-old cadets Alaina Petty and Martin Duque, an army spokesman told US media.

Peter was in uniform when he was fatally shot while holding the door for others fleeing a gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, witnesses say.

The recognition comes after an online petition called for him to be laid to rest with military honours, saying he "deserves" to be buried as a hero, because "his selfless and heroic actions have led to the survival of dozens in the area".

Peter, who had spent part of his childhood in his parents' native China, had dreamed of attending the West Point military academy, friends say.

Jesse Pan, a neighbour and longstanding friend of Peter's family, told the BBC Chinese Service he had tried to support the teenager's parents as they struggled to cope with the loss.

"I was there with his parents, helping translating and finding a funeral home," he said.

"His parents fainted as soon as they saw his body. He had got multiple shots in front… So horrible."

WASHINGTON, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Federal authorities have said that a U.S. man stole late last year a thumb of a Chinese terracotta warrior statue being displayed at a Philadelphia museum in state of Pennsylvania.

According to an arrest affidavit filed Friday, Michael Rohana, a 24-year-old man from state of Delaware, was attending a party held at the Franklin Institute on Dec. 21 last year when he made his way into the museum's special exhibit "Terracotta Warriors of the First Emperor."

The FBI said that Rohana used a cellular telephone as a flashlight, looked at various exhibits displayed in the then-closed showroom, stepped up onto a platform supporting one of the statues, and took a selfie with it.

Rohana, according to the affidavit, put his hand on the left hand of the statue, appeared to break something off from the Calvaryman's left hand and put it in his pocket, and then left.

Museum staff noted the missing thumb on Jan. 8 and a special agent from the FBI's Art Crime Team tracked down Rohana days later and showed up at home in Bear, Delaware to question him about the finger, authorities said.

In front of his father, Rohana admitted it that he had stashed the thumb in his desk drawer.

A U.S. attorney has decided to charge him with theft of a major artwork from a museum, concealment of major artwork stolen from a museum, and interstate transportation of stolen property.

He was arrested and released on a 15,000-USD bail, on the condition that he hand over his passport, consent to drug testing, and refrain from leaving the country before trail.

It was not immediately clear whether he had retained a lawyer.

A spokeswoman for the museum said that the statue will be repaired, adding that a security contractor did not follow standard procedures the night of the alleged theft.

The statue that temporarily lost its left thumb, called the Cavalryman, dates back to 210 and 209 B.C. It is one of 10 elegant Chinese Terracotta warrior statues currently on display at the Franklin Institute. The special exhibit will run through March 4th.

  5. Man stole thumb of Terracotta Warrior after taking selfie at ‘Ugly Sweater Party’

    Richard Hartley-ParkinsonFriday 16 Feb 2018 7:29 am

A man has appeared in court for stealing part of a $4.5million (£3.2million) statue during a party at a museum. Michael Rohana, 24, is alleged to have taken a selfie with the statue before snapping part of it off while it was on display at a museum in Philadelphia.

According to arrest papers, he was at an Ugly Sweater Party at the Franklin Institute on December 21 when he went into the ‘Terracotta Warriors of the First Emperor’ exhibit. Authorities say Rohana took photos while posing next to a statue known as ‘The Cavalryman,’ and then snapped off the statue’s left thumb. Museum staff noticed the missing thumb January 8, and the FBI traced it to Rohana five days later. It is unclear if he has legal representation.

A friend told investigators that Rohana posted a picture of a finger on his Snapchat the day after the party.

He was also seen on CCTV taking two friends on a tour of the room where the statue was. They left soon after the selfie was taken, but Rohana appeared to linger. Agents visited his home in Bear, Delaware, and asked him ‘if he had anything in his possession which he wanted to turn over to the FBI’. He took the agent into his bedroom and ‘retreived the stolen thumb from the top right drawer of a desk.’

A museum spokeswoman says the statue will be repaired. She says a security contractor did not follow standard procedures the night of the alleged theft. The statue, which is one of many that date back to 209BC is on display at the museum until March 4.

@Jazzy Jan, Yes, I had a mixture of emotions, but it was mainly anger.

I used to take Jude to the groomers, but not anymore. One would think our pets were safe and out of harms way in their care, but clearly not.

I watched a video yesterday where one owner took her dog to Petco to have her fur clipped,  but when she picked her dog up, she noticed it had part of it's ear missing. Apparently, they tried to GLUE the ear back on without mentioning it to the owner

    Shocking!

    :manson:  WTF!

    Poor dog.
