  1. The Solid Gold performance is not an official video for the song. There has been much talk of several videos for the song and one supposedly being official, but nothing was officially commissioned as one.

I don't really see the point of a montage. No video channel in the U.S. will play a video montage. She has more of a chance to have an original video played though. But that's a big stretch.

The point is there is a video to accompany the song that was distributed with it. Having no video, especially for a lead song of any sort of album project is bad marketing, especially when the technology available makes it possible to create something very cheaply. Youtube is the first place people will go to hear and see this song.

  2. her and cyndi had the same amount of hits and time in the public eye.

Cyndi was bigger in the UK before 85. It was only as LAV took off here that M became big and Cyndi's fame waned. Borderline didn't chart so she did seem a one hit wonder. So, to me it would have been no surprise to see Cyndi on the single but not Madge although I remember being disappointed by the time it was released as M seemed the biggest thing in the world by April!

  3. I don't know? There was no official release for "Holiday" and that became a Madonna anthem. Hell, it never cracked the top spot, but I get the feeling it's the one song EVERYONE knows of Madonna. It's a very popular song. So maybe, they are trying to duplicate that success with "Celebration"? I don't know? Also, videos do not have the same impact anymore. I really don't see a montage being something video stations will play (whenever they do play videos). And I don't see it being a very popular video on the internet.

WB needs to make sure they push this single. Radio won't play it if WB just releases it without a big push. And maybe Madonna will add it to her show as a full song before she finishes up the leg of this tour?

I'm excited though. I can't wait to hear the new song.

There was a video for Holiday - the Solid Gold performance was distributed and is still shown, certainly in Europe. And videos are essential. People go straight to youtube now to see and hear a new song. Look how many hits the 4 Minutes video got - it was huge. However, Miles Away had no video and anyone posting there own had them removed by Warner's. Probably her worst performing single ever. With little outlet on the main stream channels to see music performances and MTV etc devoting themselves to reality TV or old videos, places like youtube are essential for viral spreading of songs. A video is essential - a montage as good as She's Not Me would work well although an original one would be much better as the video montage idea has been done by her several times now.

  4. I thought she only got asked to do Live Aid at the last minute too?

As the sinlge was record in January '85, M would have only had LAV out by then and probably would have been considered a flash in the pan. If you look at the line up, they were the really big icons of MOR.

She had a lucky escape and I can't imagine her having her arms around Harry Belafonte and Tito crooning into a microphone. I like history they way it was when she came in and dropped a lingerie covered bomb on the charts in '85!

  5. If I had to save one album, I think this would be the one.

I love everything about the era - the music, the videos, the remixes and the looks - everything was perfect. And the album tracks are fantastic too - Waiting, Why's It So Hard, Where Life Begins, Secret Garden.... such a strong album and finally being recognised as a classic. The opening of Erotica just sets the fantastic dark, seedy tone.

To me, ROL just drowns in WO's production for the last half.

  6. we already got the new track titles, officially confirmed or not

and it was pretty obvious that it would get a fall release

yes, a couple of months before the release it's not unreasonable to be still firming up plans. There was some twitter news too about the remixing side and general overview of the htis. However, the MJ news will have meant many people have surpressed their PR for a while as it will just get buried until the fuss dies down. I would be surprised if it were late July or August when we start to hear more information.

  7. ^A few posts back you can see my post about the Music Week report, which lists his 5 best selling UK singles and "Heal The World" is not among them. His best seller was always "Earth Song", don't know where you got the info about "HTW".

Right, just looked into it. It was an old stat from when Radio 1 did MJ's 40 best selling singles of all time quite a few years ago. They did M as well. It was pre-itunes by quite a few years so stats will have changed in the meantime. They updated the chart last Christmas with the 30 at 50 series - all based on sales at that time where it was still Number six. I suspect that has completely changed again in the last couple of weeks.

  8. I've just watched the DAD video and the syncing is all over the place and compeletely out of time with the vocals. I'm wondering if Absolutemadonna got these from youtube? I've had issues when I've loaded up videos that the soundtrack and video get out of sync somehow during the upload process.

Just looked at Beat Goes On and Miles Away. The syncing on those is out too. Anyone experiencing this?

  9. Yes, I wonder if we will see Hard Candy rocket back up the charts after this weekend.

I also can't make up my mind if La Roux can sing in tune and Lady GaGa is beginning to annoy me now especially as she is writing about the paparazzi before she was famous.

  10. Man In The Mirror was being promoted by Chris Moyles in the UK. I suppose it is the poignancy of the song but I don't quite get it as it is not one of most well known songs by a long stretch. Just shows the power of Radio One! Still, it leaps from 11 to No.2 in the single sales and downloads chart with Billie Jean landing at No. 10 which I thought would be the big hit. Thriller and Beat It both in Top 20. It was the last three singles I expected to dominate. At least he didn't push Heal The World which is MJ's biggest selling single in the UK! Tragic!

He has three GH collections in the top 5 albums with Thriller and Off The Wall in the top 10! Sony will be happy!

  11. ^I thought this was already discussed. ;)

"WIFLFAG" was named as the 2nd single even before fans heard the CD, then it got pushed to the 3rd with "DTM". The poll was about the 4th single and I believe "II" and "Amazing" got the most votes. Then there was that disagreement between Madonna & Warner, they did want to honor the fans with a 4th single, they remixed "II" and all...

The AL poll was for the 3rd single, "LP" and "NF" got the most votes, however, Madonna said "NF" would be the 3rd single on the day of the album release. In the end they released both (in some countries it was at the same time) but "NF" didn't get a video, which was most likely because Warner preferred "LP".

For COADF and HC they never asked what fans wanted as singles, "Jump" was on the album sticker but it got bumped down for the 4th single, because "GT" sold more downloads up to that point. "MA" was a single choice since day zero, Madonna herself confirmed that in a radio interview before the album leaked, "BGO" was never meant to be a single, it was just fans wishing, but they never asked if we preferred "BGO" over "MA".

This time around, with Twitter it's different, I doubt Guy would ignore the suggestions. I think he asked for tracks that should "definitely" be there.

You're right, in the end, we will get what we get, I'm sure the album will be filled with Madonna's choices (like "HN") but I still think there's a bigger possibility for turning it into a for the fans release based on Twitters, instead of them reading fan forums about debates which songs are her biggest ever hits. Same for the comments about the TIC or new mixes, would be really surprised if they taken such comments into account.

Thanks for that. I had not seen the full story. I think LP got a video as it tied in with the perfume it was promoting. Big waste of NF though as it was the one song picked up from the start. However, I thought BGO was on stickers of the CDs implying some sort of release?

Ulitmately, I suppose it comes down to respecting an artist releases what they want rather than just the most obvious choice for commercial gain. I can't wait for this album though as it sounds interesting.

  12. ^I'd say fan favourites like "Drowned World" or "Get Together" instead of huge but forgotten hits like "This Used To Be My Playground" or "American Pie".

I always thought that the "for the fans" concept was possible, because this GH is not going to sell that much, no matter what, but if it's new stuff for the fans instead of TIC rehash, at least they are going to buy it. And remember Guy Oseary asked for tracklist suggestions on Twitter, if they really wanted to include her biggest 30 hits, they could have just looked at her US or UK chart history...

That means jack. They did a poll to ask for the third single off Music - Impressive Instant won. We got WIFLFAG. We wanted Nothing Fails, the radio stations were playing Nothing Fails, we got Hollywood then Love Profusion then a lame ass release way too late. We wanted Jump, we got is the fourth single. We wanted Beat Goes On, the radio stations were playing Beat Goes On. We got Miles Away.

They release whatever they want and can say it's what we want as how can we counter it?

We will get what we get and then we can all come back here and analyse it to death for the next 18 months.

  13. All my friends that are adopted, are adopted from poorer countries, and most of them were adopted while having biological relatives and even parents alive. According to your logic though, they should have stayed with relatives that wouldn't be able to provide a real future for them, future with opportunities like someone more fortuned would have, and i'm not even talking about a life in luxury, just things that we in the "fortuned part of the world" take for granted even.

And yes, what you said IS ignorant, because basically what you're saying is that those people (including my friends), should have been better off staying in their poor countries and that it was wrong that they were adopted, just because they were taken from "another culture" or whatever... just like small kids have got so much culture in the first place? Please! It's a known fact that culture, religion etc. comes with age. That's what makes kids so special, because up to a certain age they don't really have those type of things really because they actually doesn't really understand it. That's why small kids in some ways are actually "smarter" than grown ups because they are too young to be thinking in that kind of narrow-minded way, that older kids and adults do, therefor they won't have this "massive culture chock" you talk about. There is a phenomenon called "culture chock" for sure, but not really in this case.

I don't know you, you might not be ignorant, but THAT comment was ignorant and I will not change my opinion on that. It's so easy being so smart when growing up in a place that's more fortuned than others. When some people are struggling for the simplest things, things many of us take for granted, I think culture is not the most important issue. To even come up with that as an argument in this case is silly.

For a start, stop trashing me - you were stating in another post how great it was the moderators were taking the haters to task yet here you are trashing people and saying they are ignorant when they have put a calm, informed opinion together.

You might not agree with me but I have not gone out and trashed Kaballah and gone on a rant about colonialisation. My point was that Madonna could have provided them all a future and their families but you've just skipped that bit. Mercy's mother was intending on being a doctor and the whole village were going to support her. People do have futures in these countries but you seem to have given up on these places and assume the children are better off elsewhere. Raising Malawi is all about giving these people a future and helping the country to develop.

As for young children not being aware of culture shock, you clearly don't know any young children and how they have a need for routine. Any good parent can tell you that and how the slightest change can upset them and leave them disoriented. All those familiar faces and surroundings the children knew for the first few years of their lives will disappear and they will be thrown into a world unknown to them with complete strangers.

And once again your friends were not adopted by one of the most famous people on the planet under constant scrutiny!

  14. This is a 10 day old quote from Stereomover, haven't seen this posted here:

William is just updating some of his mixes for WB.

The upcoming GH is aimed at fans.

The songs on the comp are not necessarily full-on commercial hits, but fan favorites.

The commercial hits are what TIC and GHV2 are for.

This compilation is so much more.

Mirwais and a couple of her other collaborators (along with some new ones) are also involved.

I can't wait to see what comes of it.

    More details to come.

Interesting but when they say a compilation for the fans, I don't necessarily believe that as the fans have asked for singles and just been given other releases instead. It sounds like PR speak for "Madonna's decided to remix some of her old songs but not all of them were hits so we will call them fans' favourites instead."

Fortunately, I pretty much like everything she has ever done so I expect I will like most of it. I just don't like the lame PR that is so often not true. Also, I like the idea of the old producers coming back and tweaking their songs to improve them rather than radical overhauls.

I'm really looking forward to this release now.

  15. I love Lament from the Re-Invention Tour. A shame this whole concert never saw it's way to DVD. I still love Madonna's voice, overall. She was never Celine/Mariah/Whitney level vocals, but she's always had a nice, clear, recognizable. It can get nasally but that happens to a lot of people.

Thank God. They just shout their way through their songs. Madonna has much more emotion rather than range. Whitney's I Will Always Love You is just overblown and soulless. Listen to Dolly's original and the fragile vocals make the song far more emotive. I hope that is the gayest thing I say for a while.

Doesn't Madonna pretty much insist on just doing one take where she can to keep the emotion - well around Like A Prayer that's what she said.

  16. I like the shots especially the blurry crown one. It's great.

Interesting she asked GaGa to work with her. She always goes out and supports other females artists. She really does stand up and support aspiring talent and I think that gets overlooked or written off as trying to steal ideas.

However, she continues to support Britney even though Britters is no longer a hip act.

As for LaChapelle - gay man in bitter at Madonna shocker. Snore!

  17. there is nothing left to kill... might as well include it in a new compilation that will be "bought" by casuals

I don't think killing the IC is necessarily a bad thing? She's had nearly 20 more years of work since then and a new compliation including old and new will help expose this newer work to a broader audience and help people investigate her more recent work.
