  1. Kay Burley on Sky News said that not even Madonna comes close to him in terms of sales.

Supposedly, his sales are around 750million but I get the feeling everyone has just rushed to wikipedia to get the figures and they may have been exaggerated by fans. Radio 1 said Thriller sold over 100million sales! However, it had only sold 40 million ten years ago. I don't think 60 million people have gone out and bought it in the last ten years!

He's not had that many albums out and his single sales are below Madonna's in the UK.

Anyone got anymore accurate figures for his sales?

And yes, it's easier for male artists to be taken more seriously than female. Madonna's back catalogue is superior in terms of breadth and variety. Michael's legacy was the biggest selling album of all time and some choreography but overall he stayed in the same mould from a creative perspective.

  2. I love this album - it's one of my faves. Love Tried To Welcome Me is superb and I can't believe it didn't make Something To Remember instead of Forbidden Love which is a bit dreary.

Inside of Me is also a beautiful song. I love the way the album ends with Sanctuary and Bedtime Story too. Bedtime Story still gets criticised but I think it is beautiful track, beautifully produced and a great video.

I must admit, I'm still not a big fan of the artwork and the Secret Single cover was an odd choice too. I would swap Don't Stop with Your Honesty too as I think the latter is a stronger track.

Overall, I love the whole era from '92 - '95 as it produced many of my most favourite M songs and videos.

  3. I find it odd that people say "Human Nature" - it's such a forgetable song considering his range of work.

I'd like her to do something fun like PYT although it is another lesser known hit. I suspect the battle to get the good songs will be great if this does happen.

As for fans, there will always be the real hardcore ones who hate another artist being consider better than their favourite. Lord knows, there are several on here who can't bare any discussion about Madonna. And it does have to be said that there have been enough news reports showing some really psycho Jacko fans. Release the doves, woman! He did attract some loons. However, I think most people are adult enough to be at a rememberance concert and not boo.

I don't Madonna will make another statement until her tour starts. She's very good at not jumping on bandwagons just to be seen to say something.

  4. I think even non Madonna fans would recognise her place as the number one female artist of all time and pay her due respect. She got a lot of respect for her Live8 appearance and in the circumstances I think there would be a lot of love in the audience.

As for which songs she could sing, Human Nature wasn't a worldwide release so I doubt that would be picked. I do think she could do Bille Jean and Like A Virgin reprise. I think she would choose something like Beat It too. Classic, rocky and before he went off the rails.

  5. Madonna has managed to maintain the production of striking videos. I must admit, after Black or White, you just don't see his videos anymore. If you look at the news, it's the 80s stuff that is shown. Certainly in the UK, his 90s videowork hasn't faired well and most people couldn't tell you about any of them - they just becamse expensive and bloated. I remember seeing "Remember the Time", a song I love, but the video is some over the top Egyptian theme but not actually that exciting.

As for Prince, anyone that saw him at his 21 night sellout concert at the O2 will know he's up there with MJ and Madonna in terms of musicianship and back catalogue but his legacy will be challenging the record companies in the 90s and his early adoption of new distributions for his music. His sales may have dropped but managing the distribution directly meant he was keeping all the profit and not having to give anything to record companies.

  6. Paul Gambaccini said that he was the last popstar of his kind and quickly added, male popstar that is, we still have Madonna as the last big female act.

I don't think there'll ever be that sort of celebrity again, at least not in our lifetimes, and in both their cases, it was MTV that catapulted them to it.

Very true. Their videos were groundbreaking when MTV was just starting. Now everyone is slickly choreographed with a whole entourage of dancers but MJ and Madonna were the leaders.

From the news I have seen and heard, Madonna hasn't been mentioned that much. I've seen a variety of comments and now that celebs are all coming out of the woodwork to say their piece to camera, she is getting less mention. I'm not sure why the mother in "Ugly Betty" was asked - did she know him? And David Cameron (leader of the opposition Tory party in the UK) was asked too!!!?!?! They really are asking random famous people now!

I wonder if Madonna will actually say something on camera? She's very dignified in such circumstances and wouldn't just film something for a bit of cheap publicity.

  7. 25 years on and her music and videos still bring me so much happiness. There are so many memories when I flick through my collection.

For all her achievements, I think she is underrated and under appreciated as an artist.

  8. Michael never came out anywhere and said he was the King of Pop. I don't know why people still continue to run with that lie. Elizabeth Taylor was the first to call him that, he liked the name and the fans started calling him that as well. No doubt he loved being referred to as "The King of Pop" but this whole thing about him demanding to be called that is ridiculous. Even if he actually did tho, who cares. No one deserved the title more than him.

Perhaps this isn't the time to get into arguments now.

I think Madonna, like the rest of us, will be in pure shock but she is probably one of the few people on the planet who could totally empathise with his life. Also, he was going to follow her concerts at the O2 which will add to poignancy of his passing.

It would be great if she could add a bit of Michael like she did with Billie Jean to the concert - one of his contemporaries to honour him.

  9. Yet still ALL you do is talk about it.

Move on. Noone cares about your shitty seats.

Go screw yourself you poisonous little queen.

Some people were asking about the newly released seats at the O2 and I was advising them on the difference between side view and restricted view and how stage design affects it. It's called trying to help people from experience.

If you don't like people's posts, ignore them and move on. Nobody likes you, you have nothing of merit to say and just troll round this site posting bitter attacks of people who contribute a variety of opinions. You pathetic little twat.

  10. The "top secret" movie. I posted her recent interview about it here:

    http://forums.madonnanation.com/index.php?showtopic=26734

I forgot that the casting would start in the Fall already... That should answer any speculation about promo for GH.

Promotion for the album wouldn't take up too much time although just finishing a tour might be more reason why she doesn't do much promotion. However, she does seem much more committed to this GH launch. I think she was punishing Warners last time for not releasing what she wanted for Music.

  11. The same two Craigles still complaing about Wembley, where everyone else had a fantastic time.

I was just advising people of the difference between the term sideview and restricted view so they know what to expect. It would be completely out of order for LiveNation to make the same mistake again. I got a full refund last time so I don't care.

  12. I don't think Whitney Houston will pose much of a threat in the UK as she has done nothing for about ten years. She will have to come back with a stunning single to generate interest. Also, Mariah Carey's new single hasn't made it to Radio One yet which isn't a good sign and I don't think she has a fanbase here anything like Madonna's.

It could sell well with the build up to Christmas but it does depend on the tracklist and if it has a lot of her early stuff. At least there are new tracks. GHV2 got very little in the way of promotion here and the megamixes weren't played.

It will be all about the promotion and whether she can be bothered to appear on TV shows to let the broader audience know.

  13. Josh, "Frozen" was at the center of a copyright suit- some guy said one part had the same melody as his song, or something like that.

    Posted on Wikipedia:

On November 18, 2005, a Belgian judge seated in Mons ruled that the opening four-bar theme to "Frozen" was plagiarized from the song "Ma vie fout le camp", composed by Salvatore Acquaviva of Mouscron. The judge subsequently ordered the withdrawal from sales of all remaining discs, and forbade any further playing of the song on Belgian TV and radio under wide protest of the Belgian population. "Frozen" was a chart topper in Belgium and widely popular. Many radio and tv-stations and their audience stated that "Frozen" was loved, while the supposedly plagiarized song was unknown and disliked. The judge also ordered Warner, EMI and Sony to publish and spread the decision within fifteen days to various media outlets on pain of a penalty of €125,000 for non-compliance with the court order. No damages were granted.[1][2]

The Belgian radio station Donna held an Top 5000 music chart program from 17 November to 12 December 2008. The song "Frozen" reached place 143, however because of the legal status of the song it could not be played. The radio hosts asked their listeners to watch the music video on YouTube, while there was approximately 5 minutes of radio silence.

Now there's no point in placing the blame...

  14. Just like it was marked "partial view" at Wembley.

    :manson:

The correct term in the UK is "restricted view" if the stage itself cannot be seen in full and the tickets at Wembley were not marked as that. I sat in similar "side view" seats at Earls Court for RIT and DWT and the view was great as the stage was open right to the back so you could see everything going on throughout the show. However, on S&S tour there were huge curtains on either side of the stage blocking out most of it - you could only see about a metre of the front of the stage and the walkway in certain seats. The videos could not be seen and the side screens weren't very visible either. You couldn't see any of the action until she walked to front of stage which you would have on previous tours.

The customer has to trust what they see on the web and make a decision based on that and if the information they are given is inaccurate they are entitled to make complaint. Had LiveNation said the views were restricted, they would have been covered but they didn't and had to give refunds.

The O2 sideviews should be better though as the place is about half the size. I think the show overall will be so much better there. It's a great venue.

  15. Couldn't do it for Madonna though could it - but Take That are a much bigger act than her in the UK.

That was my point but I didn't want to mention it in case I got my arse whooped again for being negative! She did manage to get Jump into the top 10 but her concerts just don't get her albums back into the charts except IC.

Still, I suppose the old girl isn't doing that bad overall!

And Sonia? Is someone referring to that scouse bird from the 80s? Please don't say she is trying to get back on comeback trail? She was bad enough the first time round.

  16. ^ Personally I can have way more fun at the back of a conert venue upper tier or end of a field than watching it on youtube. I like the ambience and social experience of a concert. It's always fun going with friends/meeting new people or other fans. I don't need to be up in front or even in the front half of a venue to have a great time, thats just me.

When I pay to see a show like Madonna's, I want to see the show. If I want to chat to strangers in a field, I will go to Glastonbury.

  17. You're absolutely right. It's definitely more of a "risk" to bring the tour to Australia. Madonna is only touring eastern europe because it's a safer option FACT!

The money is to be made in touring and in moving in to these new territories that have opened up in the last ten years, she is guaranteed to sell out concerts and increasing sales as well as logistics being much easier just to roll from one country to the next. M is a big on business and well known for counting the pennies - the logistics and costs of going to Australia probably don't add up for a couple of nights work.

  18. Further proof that multiple singles from albums are POINTLESS - the video is getting heavy rotation too but no sign of it in the top 40. Only big new acts, such as L'GaGa can pull it off nowadays.

Take That are in at No. 9 and their album jumps to No. 12 during their highly-praised tour. Take That is a huge act in the UK, much bigger than Lady GaGa with sales of over 2million of their latest album in the UK and Ireland . They also have two other albums in the Top 75. This is what a tour and coinciding single is supposed to do!

GaGa is just hype at the moment. Whether she can sustain it, remains to be seen.

geez, I'm just looking at the dance chart and half the stuff has been round for about a year! Not sure what is going on there. As for Blur, it will be interesting to see how it performs with their forthcoming concerts.
