What a biased article! Where did it come from?
Has anyone in the UK thought of ringing Radio 1 to request the song? They might be told something like the station's not playing it or something....
I heard Scott Mills play it once and the reaction was decidedly mixed. After Miles Away tanked, I'm wondering if Radio 1 are thinking she is no longer relevant for their target market? Trouble is, Radio 1 are so up themselves and think they are cool that they tend to be desperate to be cool rather than just play good songs. Lady GaGa is played to death because she is the latest thing. They are normally happy to play new singles weeks in advance and start to reduce play once the song charts in which case, this isn't good news that they aren't playing it.
-
I didn't buy it
-
It may have been reported but I haven't seen it - Jesus is in the latest edition of GQ Italia doing a fashion spread including the obligatory speedos shot.
-
I hope we are not in for any 'Get Together' style animation. That really was the lowest point in her videography and way worse than Jump.
As for the look, it's all too reminiscent of Lady GaGa's look. I know GaGa is a clone of Madonna but in this case, M seems to be copying her and undoubtedly that is how many people will see it. Still, it's hard to judge from one still and a short clip on Facebook.

She looks like Lady Penelope on acid.

Does the LP edit of Cherish have the "screaming cat?"
Do you mean 'Who's That Girl' with the cougar roar on the Holiday Collection??
-
The tracks are not arranged in a listenable fashion, and the mixes are just random. Look at it chronologically...
Everybody (LP Edit) - presumably the 7" single edit making its CD debut
Burning Up (LP Version) - from Madonna
Holiday (LP Version) - from Madonna
Borderline (1990) (Q-Sound Mix) - from The Immaculate Collection
Lucky Star (LP Edit) - presumably the 7" single edit making its CD debut
Like A Virgin (1990) (Q-Sound Mix) - from The Immaculate Collection
Material Girl (LP Version) - from Like A Virgin
Crazy For You (1990) (Q-Sound Mix) - from The Immaculate Collection, 1991 UK single release
Into The Groove (Single Version) - 1985 single release
Dress You Up (LP Edit) ?? No existing single edit, perhaps a typo?
Live To Tell (LP Version) - from True Blue, also from Something To Remember
Papa Don't Preach (LP Version) - from True Blue
Open Your Heart (1990) (Q-Sound Mix) - from The Immaculate Collection
La Isla Bonita (LP Version) - from True Blue
Who's That Girl (LP Version) - from the Who's That Girl soundtrack
Like A Prayer (1990) (Q-Sound Mix) - from The Immaculate Collection
Express Yourself (1990) (Q-Sound Mix) - from The Immaculate Collection
Cherish (1990) (Q-Sound Mix) - from The Immaculate Collection
Vogue (1990) (Q-Sound Mix) - from The Immaculate Collection
Justify My Love (LP Version) - from The Immaculate Collection, not mixed in Q Sound
Erotica (LP Edit) - 7" single edit, also from GHV2
Secret (LP Edit) - 7" single edit, also from GHV2
Take A Bow (LP Version) - from Bedtime Stories, also from Something To Remember
Frozen (LP Version) - from Ray Of Light
Ray Of Light (LP Version) - from Ray Of Light
Beautiful Stranger (LP Version) - from The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack
Music (LP Version) - from Music
Don't Tell Me (LP Edit) - promo and international single version
Die Another Day (LP Version) - from American Life
Hollywood (LP Version) - from American Life, hopefully the promo version that fades up at the beginning to mask the transition from "American Life"
Hung Up (LP Version) - hopefully the "unblended" album version from the promotional single
Sorry (LP Edit) - single version
4 Minutes (LP Edit) - 7" and promotional single version
Miles Away (LP Edit) - single version
Celebrate - new recording
Revolver - new recording
...no rhyme or reason for an album version here, an Immaculate Collection Q Sound remix there, then a proper single edit. It's like a novice threw together whichever versions they happened to have downloaded and burned them. This is not how you celebrate the back catalog of an icon nor how you present songs that "changed the world".
I was perhaps the most excited about this release. I have barely shut up about it since... 2006, lol. I was with them with the artwork, the selected songs and I was trying to turn a blind eye to the poor job done with sequencing. I don't care if Madonna herself did it, it's ridiculous.
The mixes are a deal breaker for me. And you thought the GHV2 backlash was bad? Just wait. I really can not believe how poorly this has been handled.
If this is really the tracklist, it really is a mixed bag. Some rare edits but other than that, nothing really. I presume the Q Sound production won't be included as the album would sound odd fluctuating between that sound and the standard production. I haven't got much a problem with the IC edits though but the single version of Like A Prayer with the Prince guitar solo would have been a better choice. I too never hear the IC mix on the radio even though many of the other IC mixes are played.
Love the signature by the way!

25 23 Madonna Celebration
Dropping already, probably because Radio 1 isn't playing it.
I heard Scott Mills play it once but that is it. The reaction was mixed to the first play. I wonder if it is because it is too early before release? Radio 1 is normally pretty loyal to Madonna, even during American Life.
-
I think the tracklist proves it wasn't chosen by fans in spite of what the press release says.
So, which was the gem that supposedly got away they were talking about (Everybody? Burning Up?) and wasn't there meant to be a track from around the American Life period? Do they mean Hollywood has a new mix?
-
I'm sure in time, Warner's will do an Abba and release an all encompassing collection at some stage to milk it for all it is worth. This is their last album with Madonna involved so there has to be some agreement. After that, they own her back catalogue and can do what they want.
-
How was it really "ruined/"horrendous"? Q-Sound seem to me was the latest technology before "surround sound" became largely popular? It seemed to me the same concept. I really don't see how it really "ruined it" being you had to have some pretty decent speakers to hear the sound.
It sounds dreadful - tinny and like it was recorded in a barn - let's face it, if it was such a success, why did we never hear of it again? And I don't like surround sound but it's just a preference, oK?
-
The video just sounds like she is out to have some fun. Why does she have to be controversial all the time? People that want her to be so are just looking for a fight for no reason. You don't have to say something provocative all the time as you just end up with a reputation of deliberately causing trouble and people switch off. Using Jesus and Lourdes is not controversial but she knows it will get her some PR.
She's had a tough year and perhaps just wants to let her hair down?
-
I don't really know what to say - if the tracks are remixed it will be interesting but if they are just polished up then it really makes no difference to me what the listing is as I own everything. At least it won't be the horrendous Q-sound that ruined TIC.
My only real hope is that there is a vinyl release. Anyone heard anything?
-
Who the hell is Patty?
LaBelle?
-
If AL had been remixed and had the crappo bandwagon war video scrapped, it might have had more of a chance. Bad PR coupled with the hard production made a record that US radio didn't want especially as she was living in London.
I would love that album to get a makeover. I think there are some great songs on there but they need remixing to remove the "stiff" sound she wanted.
-
Maybe Revolver was remixed by oOakenfold for the release, who knows.or it's just an error.
An error? By Warners? Surely not!
They are so crap, it wouldn't surprised me if they pressed Mariah Carey's "Obsessed" on the album by mistake.
-
Madonna's version of Imagine better than John Lennon's?
Madonna is your Wilhelmina!
I think something from Off The Wall would be good like Burn This Disco Out. Covers of absolute classics rarely work.
-
I just don't understand the arguments about what is "appropriate" for her to sing at her age. She's made a whole career out of being "inappropriate" in different ways. It wasn't appropriate to hear the word "virgin" in a pop song when she did it....doesn't seem like a big deal now. It wasn't appropriate for a female artist to dress and act the way she did in her videos.....now the "Madonna method" is the protocol for many female pop artists.
It just freaks me out how many have this notion that once you hit 50 it's the "right way" to be more reserved, "age appropriate" (whatever that is) and singing a lyric as silly and innocent as "my sex is killa" makes people uncomfortable...not because of what you are saying but because of the age you are when you are saying it. Would anybody here have found objection to 35 year old Madonna singing "my sex is a killa. Do you wanna die happy?"
do you want to f*ck a fifty year old?
-
I don't mind but I'd prefer it if she does a cover of an unknown song of his and made it her own. She crucified Imagine and taking another untouchable classic such as Billie Jean or Beat It wouldn't be a good idea.
It was great on the VT but that was plenty.
-
I think it is great - COADF and ROL benefitted greatly from her TV appearances and in the run up to Christmas it will remind casual fans and families. I don't like the shows themselves but there has always been talent shows and one could argue the rights and wrongs and artistic merit but it's just entertainment. There are far more important things to be concerned about.
I can't believe the bit about her liking JLS though. They are pants and nothing special.
I wonder if she will sing live and do a classic? That would be great.
-
it's still not on the UK iTunes? Should it be there by now?
-
Celebration's lyrics are some of the most trite for quite a while. Whilst I applaud the attempt to weave in references to old songs, I think she has done it in the laziest way possible and some of it doesn't even rhyme. As for the line "invitation to the dance of life"? Sounds like something 2Unlimited would have sung about in '93.
Yeah, and I agree on Candy Shop - Turkish Delight and Candy Galore?
I much prefer Niki and Donna's "I've got the moves baby, you've got the lotion".

Update: Now at 31 of the 36 songs.
Everybody
Holiday
Lucky Star
Like A Virgin
Material Girl
Into The Groove
Live To Tell
Papa Don’t Preach
Open Your Heart
La Isla Bonita
Who’s That Girl
Like A Prayer
Express Yourself
Cherish
Vogue
Justify My Love
Erotica
Secret
Take A Bow
You Must Love Me
Frozen
Ray Of Light
Beautiful Stranger
Music
Don’t Tell Me
Die Another Day
Hung Up
4 Minutes
Miles Away
Celebration
Revolver
In that case, "Borderline," "Crazy For You," "Dress You Up," "True Blue" and "Deeper And Deeper" are the other 6 I would consider "essential", though "Sorry" would always be welcomed.
I think the tracklist is proof that asking the fans on Twitter was purely a PR exercise and had no bearing on the final tracklist whatsoever.
The promo video on Madonna.com seems very heavy on the GI2M and Get Together videos too.
Any word on how the songs will be "remastered"?

I need to give the song time. Ask me in a year's time.
