True...she could make a video with any huge trendy name out there and she still wouldn't get anywhere near the amount of views those artists get. Why? Make it make sense cause i don't understand anymore.

I am kinda glad though, from one perspective. Hopefully that would drive or even force her to sonically go even less commercial for her next studio albums. More "Dark Ballet", less "Crave"

  2. And of course I mentioned the Boys for Pele comparison days ago - every M fan who loves Tori Amos should understand what we are trying to say. The two albums emanate very similar enigmatic vibe. I can also hear traces of Sufjan Stevens, and I would even say that if PJ Harvey ever makes a pop album, it would sound like Madame X

  3. Sorry for bringing this post by @boy skeffington from the previous thread.

It seemed to start with the Prince tribute. I can understand not liking a performance...but since BET had a commercial directly attacking her bought/created to run immediately following her performance, I knew the tide was never going to be in her favor again. And it’s been the same outage ever since.

I also thought the Univision performance was immaculately staged and compelling ...even if your argument is the vocals.

No one is bashed harder, in my opinion.

Apart from some usual, expected dismissive comments, I don't recall a major backlash to her "Medellín" performance at BBMA. On YouTube, the live performance has even higher views than the song itself (the audio upload).

But whatever. If some fans want to believe that she is totally not capable of giving something that could be well-received at this point of her career, so be it.

Does anyone else feel really satisfied with the tracklisting / sequencing on this album?

I have to say it's so refreshing to listen through a new M record again without the need to mess with the tracklist. The whole album flows so well from start to finish!

With MDNA, I had to kick out most of the Solveig songs first and reshuffle the whole thing, while with RH I basically created my own album  (albeit a very good one, still love RH). This one is just perfect - despite the variety of styles everything is tied together flawlessly.

    We tried to explain this.

But of course when we expressed the same point of view as you did, some fans see it as though we have this some kind of an agenda to stir a backlash by reviling her previous post-COADF albums just to go into raptures about her latest work. Most fans do NOT hate RH, we just find Madame X to be a much stronger album.

And it's like we are not even allowed to compare her musical output at all (each album is wonderful, don't pit one against the other!), it's just ridiculously juvenile.

    Was this in tune ? ... 🙉

Oh for fuck's sake here comes the stupid comparison again to defend her Eurovishit calamity? THAT is a banging performance of a monster new hit which successfully launched an era, not her butchering a classic song by blabbering like someone who cannot hold a single note over karaoke "music".

I’m not sure I’ve ever really found AL political. The video obviously but for me the song was more about her own introspection and where she was currently at in her life after 20 years of fame. To me it doesn’t fit Pride and actually feels ham fisted.

She has the potential to cause a gay implosion with simply four songs from a catalogue of 36 years so her choices strike me as odd.

im fine with I Rise... it’s suitable and I hope it’s the one she begins with.

Ideally I wish she was doing 10 songs... starting with serious and contemplative, building to joy and hope. Just like the last 50 years of the gay movement. If that were the case then sure, throw in Future.

IMO it’s a disappointing set of song choices however I’m not going to throw in my Stan card over it. I would have loved a Live8 moment... I don’t see this resonating with the crowd though and gaining her any new or younger fans. A longer and more thought out set list may have had that potential.

Sorry if I’ve been a Debbie Downer!

No, not a Debbie Downer moment at all from you. That is the most sane, rational response one can give.

Unlike writing a social science dissertation on how the gays do not care about the message blablabla just to defend her choice to sing a SELF-INDULGENT song like "American Life" at the Pride.

I like Dino D'Santiago's voice, I love Madonna's melancholy, pitched spoken-word vocals and I especially like how it manages to feel dreamy, despite having such a punchy beat.

I feel like this song could have a really wide audience, it's very appealing.

    👍

But babe, not Santiago, it's Kimi Djabatè :grr: :lmao:I think it's the perfect closer. Sorry "I Rise". This song is CELESTIAL

Rebel Heart is a soldid album

^ A very weak post, and as an unintended consequence, reflects how weak the RH album is, ironically.

I love "Best Night", "Devil Pray", "Inside Out", "Addicted (The One That Got Away)", and "Rebel Heart" probably more than 90% of people on this forum, but there's no way I can objectively declare their home album to be a highlight that is anywhere near as good as or better than its highly adventurous, radical, defiant successor Madame X. It's almost like claiming my favorite high school physics teacher is a better physicist than Einstein.

50 years of Stonewall. It would have been the perfect moment to remember the fight of the past, to enjoy the achievements and to reflect on the challenges of the present. And maybe to remember that Pride used to be a politcal demonstration. Today the overwhelming majority of gays merely see it as another chance to get drunk, to get drugged up, to fuck around like there is no tomorrow. Of couse only, if you are a young, good looking or at least well hung guy. But of course, the gay community is such an inclusive one, where everyone finds his/her place. What a fucking lie, what fucking hypocrisy, what fucking superficiality. This community needs a wake up call. The whole situation of "let's have a party", reminds me of this scene in "A normal heart" where people were still arguing that they will not stop fucking around because they have somehow earned that right when they are confronted with the fact that this "gay cancer" is most likely transferred by having sex. Ignorance is a bliss they say. NO, it's not. And the fact that 50 years of Stonewall seems to be just another chance to have mindless fun is frustrating. Just as frustrating as the reaction Madonna received during her GLAAD speech when she mentioned 50 years of Stonewall and its importance and there was a deathening silence in the room full of supposedly educated people or activists. Confused about it, she abruptly changed the topic and started talking about herself "hhm kay, her comes the me part".

This community is its worst enemy. How can you expect people outside of the community to stand up for you, if you don't even do it for yourself. If there should come a time when LGBTQ rights will be dismantled, this community is the only one to blame. The question is: will this community fight then or will they party on and play the victim because it's so en vogue?

    End of rant.

Which can only mean one thing: She has to sing "American Life"

Rebel Heart was never a career highlight for me. It was too messy starting from the leaks to the sloppy editing of the album. The promo was amazing though, but still the era left me somewhat underwhelmed. Her first tour I skipped since I am a fan. On the other hand, I was moderately excited for Madame X, and bam, that's definitely a career highlight for me after Confessions.

Be careful! Some people might accuse you of perpetuating the undesirable RH-bashing narrative, never mind the fact that you do genuinely think that Madame X is a career highlight and RH was never one in the first place.

I don’t think any of us are missing a point nor do we have to concede anything in regards to what we think of Rebel Heart or any other Madonna album for that matter. In my opinion, Rebel Heart is superior to Madame X and is absolutely in the same league as her career standouts.

And you nor any other fan are kingmakers in declaring what album is the heir to stand aside the likes of LAP, ROL, and Confessions.

Every single time Madonna releases a new album it’s automatically crowned as her magnum opus. And RH absolutely was 5 years ago. I remember reading about how members were “crying and shaking in the corner” over several moments, performances, and songs from that era. Now Madame X comes along and it’s the same thing. The next album will come along in a few years and I can ASURE you it will be cast aside by certain members as too cold, not cohesive enough, etc. It’s just the way things go around here.

Anyway. You know I like you and appreciate your humor, posts, and opinions. So I’m not here for a pissing match. There are fans who think BOTH records are career highlights and it’s I think it’s fair to leave it at that.

4 years ago I said that RH contains her most melodious songs since LAP, and I still stand by that view now. The melodies on that album are scrumptious. But the scope of musical evaluation is much wider than that. I (and many other fans) have to be honest that as an ALBUM (dear God, again the same point), Rebel Heart does fall flat and it's far from being a sturdy start-to-finish record.

Obviously not everyone agrees, but that is the clear consensus of the fanbase. Consensus is a GENERAL agreement among a group of people, conceding to a consensus does not mean you have to subscribe to that particular dominant point of view. Not at all.

I don't think Celine Dion is a great singer, but I do concede to accept the consensus that PEOPLE have on her, generally people do regard her to be a great vocalist.

If she was to sing Express Yourself I can guarantee half of her contrarian fans would complain she was lazy in revisiting an old chestnut.

If she did Deeper and Deeper, it would be that her voice sounds bad, and how does the song reflect anything Pride-related?

If she sang Live To Tell, the porta potties would be overflowing.

    Excuses, excuses.

Now the easy narrative behind this type of reasoning is that: "Oh, Madonna will be bashed for anything she did anyway, so why don't just stop putting any careful thoughts on everything altogether, just do ANYTHING LITERALLY". This is just sad.
