oh of course it shouldn't and it obviously didn't. but i don't know what idiot greenlit an interview with a publication that has shown nothing but utter contempt for her for years.

They were probably acting in good faith, thinking that maybe they could get a fair shake.

I do think their Rebel Heart review was somewhat fair. Honestly, that particular review does not bother me too much, reading it back. But many years ago, I think they reviewed Tell You A Secret, and oh my god, the language they used was so fucking nasty and borderline abusive. I wonder if its still around. It was really gross.

  2. I actually have this theory that Madonna is single right now and very happy being single, and that's why the album is so good. She's singing about past loves and she's also singing about herself. I Don't Search is a very telling song.

It's kinda like the Erotica era. She was just sleeping around and being sort of an exploratory member of the queer community and immersing herself in a subversive counter culture. She more or less let go of all that once her biological clock came racing at her like a freight train, but I think she's back in that headspace. No fucks given, self love, at peace. No wonder the album is so enchanting

pitchfork gave rebel heart a 5/10 and that was when she gave them a big exclusive interview. imagine what they'll do this time. they've never liked her.

And you know, it should not matter whether or not Madonna gives them an interview or not, they should review music on the merits. But there's a very common thread with them. Just look at the way they stood out when they reviewed Confessions. They can't seem to know what to make of her, so they just slap on a mediocre score and give us a whole bunch of verbose crap to chew on that NEVER makes any sense.

They're incels, I am telling you lol

No offense, but Madonna branded Americans to be less intelligent than Europeans back in 2003

lol and what? Madonna is the arbiter of who is dumb and who isn't?

Look, the only reason I told ppl to put a sock in it is cuz this crap is for the politics thread. We get it, America elected Donald (never mind the fact that he only got elected on a technicality and Clinton got 3 million more votes than him but ANYWAY), but it's so laughable when ppl from Europe use bad reviews from the USA to say we're all stupid over here.

Lest we forget the way German press totally gutted Madonna just a few weeks ago, or the fact that you guys sent that disgusting fat fuck Piers Morgan over here to terrorize us with his vicious Madonna hate. The UK press used Madonna's exodus from London after the Guy divorce to decide that they hated her all over again. Are you guys dumb too? Of course not. It's stupid.

Not talking about this anymore lol. Let's get back on topic

  5. I think it'll remain in the 70-75 range (sometimes I can't believe I care about this stupid website, but I do like reading analysis of her work, frustrating as it may be). Pitchfork... let's just say I know how the incels on that website think, and they're probably going to fuck her up for this album because of 1-2 songs that give them plenty of ammunition (Killers, Loca). That's just how they are, and I've accepted that they're always going to put in work to make her look like shit. That's just their MO with women like Madonna. It's ok, it's their karma lol

At any rate, I can't see how anyone can listen to Madame X and score it lower than Rebel Pork, but what do I know, I'm just a 30 something year old faggot I guess

I agree and the only reviews i kinda respect are the british ones.

@sotos8Americans are known to be pretty stupid , i'm sorry but Americans are incredibly stupid

Okay, now you guys are getting a little bit ridiculous.

Europe just basically immolated Madonna for Eurovision with their vicious press, particularly the UK. Those chat shows were appalling.

DOES IT MAKE EUROPEANS STUPID? NO? Then shut the fuck up. Let's not go there in this thread.

I think it’s important to remember that traditionally music critics have been straight male, rock-oriented, unprogressive, and anti-pop. I don’t see much of an evolution in this, other than in the way we’ve see nerds transform into hipsters because they adhere to the uniform society has prescribed and they went to the gym thanks to the tech industry’s economic clout and subsequent cultural takeover! The very notion of genre-shifting gives these people hives, and so Madonna is mostly not seen as an artist, but as a pillaging, cultural-appropriating, mediocrely talented entertainer who has simply skated over the zeitgeist as if by sheer force of narcissistic determination. These, I believe, are the assumptions of the writers of each 3/5, and some of the 4/5 reviews we have seen.

There has nearly always been a resistance to the notion that Madonna is creative and original. Instead, the only explanation for her success has to come from her deft manipulation and deceit. It’s the very essence of the patriarchy and its pernicious misogyny, and while the popular genres are no longer rock and soul, critics seem to approach Madonna as if she were still defined by another era when that was the case.

My main point regarding critics and why I personally find them all essentially disappointing is that, as journalists, you’d expect them to seek a unique perspective on their subject. However, nearly every review is written as if based off of some version of a Cliff Notes bio born outside of context and the broader scope of investigation. This leads to a very monotonous, seemingly lazy approach to understanding the music, and most certainly to understanding Madonna herself; it’s as if the writer and reader require a revisionist history lesson in order to even begin to grasp who Madonna is and what she has done, the most irritating common thread in the collective narrative being that Madonna was once an iffy trendsetter by design, but has been assaulting the world with an uneven and mediocre output of trend-chasing albums since she was whipped into submission post-American Life. Ironically, you’d get the feeling that some of her fans agree with this narrative, thus reinforcing my theory that there are a good deal of masochists among us to have chosen to endure something they don’t actually appreciate for more than a decade! It’s as if Madonna has a requirement to be purely confessional, or limited to the naïveté of the anthemic disco-stomper. If her music and lyrics don’t address this need more obviously she has failed: she didn’t become Joni Mitchell, so how dare she pick up a guitar and write words that aren’t tantalizing, veiled confessionals; she didn’t grow grey, and become the wistful, nonchalant vagabond, writing enigmatic academic poetry like Patti Smith, and so how dare she manifest as a real sentient human being on a real human journey towards awakening and enlightenment. Oh! And we mustn’t forget that she is the only human being alive to wish to preserve her youthfulness. She should just stop investing in herself altogether beyond her past, acceptable accomplishments, and she should especially unplug from all technology because, well, she’s been old for over ten years and must stop challenging herself and the general public through this outrageous desire to invent, to innovate, to inspire and to be inspired. Otherwise, no matter how interesting it seems, it is “BIZARRE”.

Is it bizarre? Sure, it’s a narrative that deserves to be explored to a degree, but if you repeat something enough, it becomes the truth. “Madonna must fit into the quirky box now if she wants us to qualify this output”! It’s both disheartening and hysterical all at once!

I have read very little of value that deserves to become the truth in these reviews. I can make up my own mind about what is good and bad, and Madame X is quintessentially Madonna at her best. Whether or not that is good enough for someone else doesn’t interest me much at all unless they are able to tell me why with knowledge, passion and intelligence, which is what a music critic is paid to do after all! I’m still waiting.

    How incredibly well stated.

It's interesting though, how we all sorta sensed that though. I just find it odd that she will consequently tour with that material so elaborately.

I think she always believes in her work no matter how dreadful it is to put together. Look at the way she spoke about Bedtime Stories during Ray of Light. She said very similar thing that she's saying now. Big difference of course - Bedtime Stories was a moderate success so it wasn't as though it was starting to self-destruct her career the way MDNA and Rebel Heart (depending on who you ask, but you get what I mean, we all know what people say about current Madonna, unfair and nasty as it may be).

I think Madonna understands fundamentally, in retrospect why those albums failed. That's what she's alluding to there. And why Madame X is the album that it is.

I don't like all the autotune and it sounds like she is mumbling in some of the vocals. The experimental nature is certainly different and may grow on me but dark ballet for example has great vocals and the middle section just spoils it for me. Don't want to bring negativity though its just my opinion and glad so many fans are loving it.

Interesting. Thanks for taking the time to answer at least! It was not asked in bad faith 👍

I have been a Madonna fan since like a prayer and have loved the promotion of this era and looks which give me erotica vibes. However I really don't like the majority of the album I'm afraid so will sit this one out. Glad of the positive reviews and vibes on here and that she is doing something different  but this just isn't for me. 😞

What about it disappoints you? Genuinely curious.

I have to say, I wasn't expecting to like this song, specially because I don't like funk...BUT I loved it. It is million times better than I thought and Madonna and Anitta fit perfectly. Really great.

It's fucking amazing. Sassy, sexy, aggressive, just an amazing dance song. UGH I LOVE HER

How in the world is doing Fado and Samba music "chasing trends"? I've never heard Ariana Grande or Dua Lipa making that kind of music. Fuck Uncut!

They probably had an idea of what kind of review they were going to write before they even heard the album.

Pitchfork and Uncut are jokes. Bunch of white dudes who hate powerful women and get half-mast boners for Taylor Swift (who incidentally makes some of the worst music known to man)

  13. For the life of me, I cannot see how anyone could say Madonna is chasing trends here. In another thread @acko kinda talked about this... pop is all about being accessible, so it kinda makes the concept of trend-chasing a moot point, but even in that context, this album is not even close to being anything pop radio would readily play, even if Ariana Venti Latte released it...

It's a lot like Music and American Life. Music somehow landed the plane perfectly and got Madonna some hits, but I feel like that was because the atmosphere at the time was welcoming. Madame X sounds like the pressure (and the kids gloves) are OFF. THANK GOD.

I think she's referring to the tweet that Springstein's team is purposely feeding the trolls and creating a Bruce V Madonna narrative to trash her, like Janet and Mariah before. It certainly appears that way...in the US...did you see the drudgereport over the last 48 hours.

    Of course it's coordinated.

Sounds really outta character from Bruce

I'd need to see receipts. Drudereport has been harassing Madonna since I was a teenager. That was awhile ago :rotfl:I don't see how it connects to Bruce. But whatever keeps you guys entertained I guess
