Acclaimed Music has updated it site; unlike the songs- which expanded to 6,000 rankings- the album stayed at 3,000.

Keep in mind that year-end lists in the 80s and into the 90s weren't as prevalent (or, perhaps, attainable) as ones from the later portion of the 90s and beyond.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I would have loved to see a Metacritic score for Ray Of Light. Music and Confessions are both at 80 which is a pretty great score and I'm sure ROL would have been even higher.

Probably so. Metacritic, as you know, though, collects initial reviews. So it isn't always the best barometer of an album's overall acclaim (hence, to look beyond that, at year-end, all-time lists, etc.).

And some albums have notably fewer reviews than others.

Oh interesting, you can definitely see how much the critical reception for some albums has changed since their initial reviews. Erotica and Bedtime Stories (both at 71) in particular I'm sure were affected by the Sex book backlash and would be rated much higher by contemporary critics.

Trying to do Metacritic scores for older albums is tricky, as you need initial reviews and then do your best tio come up with a score. In any event, there's Acclaimed Music, so no need for such doodling.

And, if you notice, E and BS haven't fare all that well on best-of lists since their release. Two of Erotica's lists are from gay-oriented sources, and just the Slant list is an all-encompassing one that it's featured on.
