Shane
I know that this is a challenge, because the definition of what constitutes a ballad vs. a slow song could be argued endlessly. I have seen Waiting and Miles Away referred to as ballads. Some of her more experimental songs like Sanctuary could qualify as well. For the purposes of this list, I am asking myself if the song would have fit on STR. So here is what I would hand in if a stranger to Madonna's music wanted a complete list of her officially released ballads. Please tell me if you think I did a thorough job, what you might add or delete etc. Yes I am a dork, but aren't we all in some small way. Phineaspoe
That's interesting. To add to your list, I would argue that (the original) Like a Prayer could be considered a pop/rock "power ballad."
ryan
I don't think I'd consider What It Feels like or Little Star to be ballads. Also, I think there could more inclusions from I'm Breathless.

ryan
lol yupp. Mainly because it's one of my favorites. But it's one of her best vocal performances, theres much emotion in her voice. And it works as a ballad and gets to the point.

svperstar
Why aren't we including some of the unreleased ones? Her rendition of "If You Go Away" is sublime (though it probably could have done with a new vocal for release purposes).

I'm just attempting to come up with a definitive list, and wanted to see how accurate (or not) I was. I agree about WLB, which I love.

Guest PRPapi
Nice list. Here's mine: 1. Secret (Starts it off with an acoustic guitar to rock guitar section) 2. Deserve It 3. Nothing Fails 4. Don't Tell Me 5. Beautiful Killer 6. Candy Perfume Girl 7. Love Profusion - Rock Mix (Then the energy and guitar of this section is followed by...) 8. Beautiful Stranger (which helps it flow into a more "pop" feel that then eases into a more serious/sad section that highlights M's vocals) 9. Crazy for You 10. Borderline 11. Take A Bow 12. You'll See 13. Love Tried to Welcome Me 14. Bad Girl 15. Love Don't Live Here Anymore (Here comes the sexy!) 16. Waiting 17. Justify My Love 18. Erotica (Then, the repurcussions felt by bad relationships) 19. Best Friend 20. Devil Wouldn't Recognize You 21. Love Spent - Acoustic (LS acoustic ends with music that helps it flow into the "live" and "reflective" section...) 22. Drowned World/Substitute for Love - Live from Confessions 23. Paradise Not For Me - Live from Confessions 24. La Isla Bonita - Live from Drowned World Tour (Ends this first part on a high note) (This starts the unofficial "second" part of the collection) 1. I Want You 2. Frozen 3. The Power of Good-Bye (POG ends with guitar strums, which leads into another brief guitar section...) 4. Gone 5. Hollywood (Hollywood's a socially-conscious and reflective type of song, and this musically leads to...) 6. What It Feels Like for a Girl 7. Easy Ride 8. Voices (which ends in a dramatic fashion, including thunder, and this leads to...) 9. Rain (naturally, which leads into a "trip-y" section...) 10. Sanctuary 11. Bedtime Story 12. Nobody Knows Me 13. Nobody's Perfect (NP's a self-pity type song that contains a guitar bridge and ends with guitar, and this leads to...more guitar and self-pity!...) 14. One More Chance 15. Miles Away 16. X-Static Process 17. Intervention 18. Like A Prayer - Live from Reinvention Tour (which heavily features guitar and adds a pick-me-up to this section, and allows for...) 19. Mother and Father - Live from Reinvention Tour (and the ending notes of this performance flow nicely into... 20. Live to Tell (which starts another self-reflective, sad section...) 21. Oh, Father 22. Promise to Try 23. Deeper and Deeper - Reinvention Demo Version (although self-reflective, it's music is more uptempo, and the jazzy style of this version leads into...) 24. Secret Garden (which is a freakin' AWESOME, jazzy song, and speaks of inner Madonna, which leads into...) 25. Like it or Not (and the listener is reminded of who Madonna is, and how she's not gonna stop whether they like her or not. Ending.) There are some faster songs in there (BK, BS, NKM, etc.), but those were added mainly to break any monotony and to add some energy to the playlist to keep it from getting boring. Just thought I'd share. Edited February 6, 2014 by PRPapi
