American Life with GMAYL pretty close behind. But I believe AL was a true career damaging moment that's she's never really completely recovered from. The song itself was pretty crappy and killed any potential for the album. The original video was clever and awesome and could have saved it, but pulling it was the first time I truly ever saw her back away from controversy. It was so un-Madonna like and a let down for me. The flags replacement video just added to insult. I do enjoy the Headcleanr mix though.

Madonna/Like A Virgin Era Introduced Her.
True Blue/WTG Era showed she was more than a one trick pony
Like A Prayer showed she could have artistic depth in her work
Vogue/Dick Tracy/Blond Ambition/Immaculate Collection/JML/Truth Or Dare blended everything and sealed her legendary icon status.
Everything afterwards has been icing on the cake.

Love everything about this song. So hauntingly beautiful.

80s - Like A Prayer (Album) / Like A Prayer

2010s - MDNA / Beautiful Killer

I'd be interested to know the experiences of those around when both were released. I get the sense "Vogue" was bigger at the time - it was the best selling song of 1990, obviously ushered in a dance craze, and was released at the absolute peak of her imperial phase; meanwhile Like a Prayer to some extent was overshadowed by its video controversy.
I was a senior in HS when Like A Prayer came out and a freshman in college when Vogue came out. Vogue was far more of a cultural event at the time. I don't think the straights had quite figured out it was such a gay anthem. I remember walking by frat houses at USC where I went t college and hearing Vogue blasting out the windows. It was played at all the college parties.
I do think LAP has aged better with the public and it's seen as a more of a spiritual anthem today which is quite different from how it was viewed when it was first released.

1984
First became aware of her when "Holiday" started climbing the charts. By the time "Lucky Star" came out I was on board for life.

And of course there is the fierce treadmill walk from RIT's "Nobody Knows Me" performance. :-)

Of those, BA was the most iconic performance but still overshadowed by the 1984 VMA performance which shot Madonna to Superstar status. Musically, I do love the CT version.

I think:
4 Minutes (Intro)
Music (verse, chorus)
Express Yourself (Full song)
Ray Of Light (Full Song)
*New Song*
Holiday (blow the roof off that stadium)
She's needs to re-claim Express Yourself from that trash that stole it from her and what better way than a kick ass superbowl performance
I like this...I think a 4 Minutes intro is appropriate in a sports setting --plus younger teenage non Madonna fans will recognize it because it's her most recent big hit. I would replace Express Yourself (a bit too female-anthemy for the SB) with Into the Groove or possibly Everybody. We have to think of this performance for the general public, not as fans. Her biggest, most recognizable songs is what need to be performed to get her seen in the best light. I just hope it happens...we've seen this rumor many times in the past.

I've always loved Like A Prayer and considered it my favorite with Ray of Light a close second. But the last couple of years I find myself more attached to ROL, so I think it's time I just go ahead and make it official and say that RAY OF LIGHT is my Favorite Madonna album of all time!

I believe this is the version being referred to:

Which song? I only know like three or four 2 Unlimited songs. It's definitely not Twilight Zone. I used to have that CD single back in the 90s with all the remixes and it's not from one of those mixes.
