  1. Correction required: Madonna didn’t mime Fever in The Girlie Show. I was there front row in Paris, and she isn’t miming in the recorded shows in Japan and Australia either. I believe she did playback in London one night.

Also, we are in the Madonna section of a Madonna forum. If I want to share my belief that Beyoncé is a competent, but boring one trick pony who does little more than professional stripper moves, I will.

If I want to dismiss that formerly snout-faced, restylane addicted, pathologically disturbed fraud of a turd who has so revoltingly and transparently disrespected Madonna, and others, over and over again like some alien parasite in order to maintain even a semblance of a career for the bulk of this decade, I will.

I am so convinced that once the changing of the current media guard takes place, as it did last time around 2009, her career will be nothing more than a piss puddle of ridicule. No one with even an iota of taste and KNOWLEDGE (capitalized because it is what is wrong with her fans...like most post-millenials, they are too conceited, arrogant and LAZY to inform themselves about something that they didn’t shit out of their own asses because they were taught by their idol to be dishonest and dismissive in order to cover up their insecurities) can look at the reductive one on stage and tell me that they think she is good. No grace, no stamina, no rhythm, no style, no charm, no charisma, no authenticity. She can bellow all she wants in a desperate attempt to prove she can sing, but it doesn’t conceal any of the previously stated missing elements that make a real star. She mimes, and uses vocal backing tracks more than Madonna ever did. You wanna see Madonna uncontestedly singing every note live at her first career peak? Theres not a trace of a backing track on the WTG tour. She has all of the qualities that runt lacks. And beauty. And she’s brilliant.

No more revisionism, please. It’s beneath Madonna, and while a healthy discussion or debate is what a forum is all about, no one should be actively seeking to diminish Madonna’s accomplishments on a Madonna forum.

  2. Total revisionism in the negative Super Bowl talk. Ever since Madonna’s iconic performance, it’s become customary to hype the hell out of every subsequent performer, and not one has come close. And don’t give me Beyoncé as an example. She was a professional stripper the first time, and the second was pseudo-political filler, and ugly to boot. Above all, no one is ever going to get away with claiming that the unmentionable reductive one gave anything close to an outstanding performance. It was dire.

The level of professionalism and grace Madonna displayed, not only performing with a hamstring injury, but recovering extremely quickly from a near tragic misstep on the bleachers, is something I haven’t seen any other performer deliver. The limitations of the staging and dismantling windows in a massive stadium at a live event watched by an unimaginably large worldwide audience meant there were too many logistical sound risks for the type of performance Madonna was delivering. That may sound like excuses, but it’s hardly as if she has never performed live over the last forty years. We all know she has had intermittent fantastic live vocal performances and some dire  as fuck ones. It’s not some industry secret like Milli Vanilli and Black Box. Side note: that’s why she mimed without a mic at the VMA’s. She had been accused of lip syncing on the BA tour, and she was making a statement about the real industry hypocrisy...not forgetting that Paula Abdul was found to have sung over guide vocals on her album at the time too.

Some day the generational tide will turn again, and Madonna will cease being the punching bag for others’ transgressions. I hope that’s not when she’s dead, but at the rate we are going with all this rewriting of her legacy by the media, her haters, her fans and occasionally herself, it’s becoming a rough ride. If there’s continued negativity going into her new musical project, I honestly think I will unplug and just enjoy it old school in my own world! It was always the best way!

I think social media continue to make so many people behave differently online than they normally would.

There is so much extreme negativity and criticism on Madonna's social media that it must effect her if she's actually reading the comments.

I agree with you and kurt420, but I also feel it’s entirely possible to maintain an IG presence without enabling comments. That would be a much wiser philosophy to follow in my opinion. It makes no sense to me that a person of her accomplishments, distinction and experience would choose to expose herself to such bile and vitriol unless she gets some type of kick out of it, which seems bizarre but not entirely impossible or uncharacteristic considering she has always been driven by criticism on some level. That said, she’s also shown consistent signs of being negatively affected when she does expose herself to the intensity of polarity that she can create. Therefore I personally cannot understand why, after years of shielding herself from critics, reviews and the press in general, she would now wish to sift through the swamps of online trolls commenting on her plastic surgeries, her age, her relevance, and occasionally her (lack of🤬) talent. If she wants to test the waters of public and fan opinion, have someone put together a weekly report of media reports and fan forum dialog. As Kim said, this wouldn’t be hard if she dipped a little less into the “yes person” pond. Naturally she is shielded given her wealth and her need for safety and security for both herself and her family as a polarizing public figure, but she’s more often than not shown herself to be a relatively self-aware person...that part gets lost in her social media presence because it seems like she feeds the narrative set by the trolls and online tabloidism by acknowledging their talking points and therefore making them relevant to her image and her message.

Its probably a no win situation for her, and so I don’t say any of this without understanding that we know NOTHING about her personal views or her private life, and that the amalgam of what I have observed for the 35 years I’ve been in awe of this extraordinary person is just a minute representation of what drives her in her own mind. There can never be enough Madonna as far as I’m concerned, and I love that she still makes me question my thoughts, that I still regularly find myself on this rollercoaster ride of adulation, frustration, contemplation and then love all over again...every time. No matter what she does! In the end, it always makes sense somehow, and so I can debate til the cows come home...she always delivers something unexpected that ends up fitting right into the master plan!

As for Ray of Light, it was essentially a return to form in the media and the general public’s eyes, and therefore a comeback. Perhaps not as remarkable as Tina Turner’s, or Mariah Carey’s for that matter, mainly because it’s true that Madonna has never had a project or an era characterized as an all-out flop like Carey, nor had she fallen into oblivion for a decade like Turner had. It may have just been a narrative created for PR, but her consistent chart peaks were no longer guaranteed by 1995, and as Madonna has always been written off at any sign of weakness, it was easy to write her off as past her prime when Bedtime Story and Human Nature failed to ignite the charts. Take A Bow was only a massive hit in the US, and her public persona grated rather than endeared from the end of 1990 on. The idea that Madonna had matured both personally and in her creative output post-Evita was a huge PR coup that really reinvigorated her commercial appeal until American Life, which would never have suffered the commercial fate it did if she had not positioned the album as a political indictment of George W Bush and American society at large. Americans don’t like to be criticized as a united body. We can only hate each other tribally, not nationally! So she was toast because those who were politically in alignment with her alleged message recognized that the work had neither political weight nor the courage of its conviction with the sole political angle silenced by Madonna’s choice to withdraw her video for the lead single. All just my observation, but it’s definitely how it all resonated in my world.

This is just nonsense. Though I suspect you're (as usual) looking at it through purely US-centric eyes. Frozen smashed everywhere and announced that Madonna meant business and hadn't lost the knack for reinvention and capturing the zeitgeist after years of floundering in MOR Evita-esque blandness . It was a HIT before it was even released, before any promo kicked in, before it was on constant rotation, before anything. It just has that (h)it factor.

Music was the same only to a lesser extent as she was simply building on the foundations ROL set, and if the foundation was shaky the whole thing would have caved,

The closest she's come since is when the first two RH demos leaked and garnered almost universal positivity and anticipation.... that they went on to piss up the wall.

This is why Madonna needs to stop surrounding herself with yes people, naysayers and doomsday merchants who fill her head with crap about ageism and misogyny and conspiracies instead of dealing with the real issues of quality control, public relations and mismanagement.

I just read this. IMO you summed it up perfectly. Some of her cringeworthy IG posts freak me out because I don’t understand what world of talking points she’s living in when it comes to her career. Didn’t her experience and spiritual teachings emphasize restraint and abstention in terms of reacting to criticism, or was I following an entirely different icon all these years? That said, I have a very good feeling about the music she will share this year, and am entirely prepared to remove the social media persona from the equation.

  5. What a fantastic way to bring in the new year! 2019 promises to be extraordinary...and without intended pettiness, I am so thrilled she is coming back to her roots to remind people that she is the ultimate gay icon; the one who has been most impactful in mainstreaming and elevating gay culture and identity, and the most vocal and steadfast ally we have ever had when it really counted. This is going to be an amazing year, and Madonna is going to be a huge contributor to that reality! I cannot emphasize how impressed I am by that higher register delivery at the end of “can’t help falling in love”! The woman can sing! I’m all for eradicating negativity too. We have had plenty of time to adjust to the changing times, including Madonna’s personal body choices! No censorship please, but try to focus on the message. Listen and learn! Time to focus on kindness and being our best selves. I’m so honored that I have had this fabulous woman to look up to for almost a lifetime!

Not my cup of tea... plus, why are migos homophobic? I always heard that, but never knew why? Can anyone tell me? If that’s the case how can she criticize the guy in Brazil but be friends with homophobics in the US?

They rapped “I cannot vibe with queers”, used some lame excuse that they didn’t mean gay people in using the term, and then said that due to interest in fashion, they had lots of exposure to gay people they had tons of respect for. I paraphrase. But it wasn’t that big of a deal. Then there was something with ilovemakonnen when he came out. They said he lost credibility, but also apologized and said they love all people of all creeds etc. Some people are more easily offended than others. That’s the culture we live in currently. I don’t personally see it as a reason not to work with them. Their use of GarageBand on the other hand...🙄🤕I mean every track on this album has the same drums and instrumentation. The M track is easily the best.

  7. My brain upon first two listens: WTF? So repetitive, yuck, horrible vocals and production, dire pronunciation of champagne (like some Ohio-based French-teaching school marm daydreaming of one day going to Paris). I hate songs about drinking at the club with the faux elite crap references.

Upon third and fourth listens: of course it’s repetitive; her vocal is treated like a sample that comes to life with the onset of intoxication. Best rap I’ve heard Cardi B do...her voice sounds smooth and sexy for once. Sick beat, and I like  the flute. Love the “crazy what I’ll make you”. Like Nobody’s Perfect meets Justify My Love meets Best Friend. It’s an earworm.

Fifth listen: I’m hypnotized. Get me to my pole at the strip club! Another song about M’s pussy! Yassssss!

    🥂👍🏿👍🏽👍🏻💫💕🙏🏼

  8. I think for me personally the issue is not that she will have waited so long to release new music. If she went all Kate Bush (not an artistic comparison by any measure...just an example) and disappeared for five years, and the (mostly British in Kate’s case) public was genuinely curious to see how she and her music had evolved, I’d see that as an impactful career choice. However, the fact that we have been so consistently exposed to Madonna via social media throughout her musical absence and that much of that presence has focused on purely commercial endeavors that are demographically alienating to much of her fanbase has dampened spirits, lessened expectations, heightened cynicism and temporarily destroyed a part of the artist’s mystique. That can’t be a good thing as far as I can see right now. Again, just an opinion...I don’t want to make that the sole focus because I personally am totally excited to get new music whenever it arrives, and am open to being blown away by however Madonna has evolved musically. I have very rarely been disappointed by any of her musical endeavors, but I definitely do not share her opinion that her skincare line is creative or artistic, nor do I find her advertising campaigns sharp or compelling. So I get why we are all anxiously awaiting signs that the album release is near, and I really hope she draws a clear line between her music and her peripheral “projects and products”. When all is said and done, of course Madonna is the decider of how she manages her career, and her focus is her prerogative, but she gained an audience through music.

Moving away from the total garbage that is this thread and much of this forum at the moment, no one is talking about the music at the moment. Was anyone else completely shocked by her choice to work with Mirwais again? What the hell precipitated this? I'm fascinated, mystified and confused by this decision all at once. Did he send her a demo that she went nuts over? Did she contact him first? Does this signify her disillusion with the current music scene and has she finally realised after a decade, that chasing a hit and working with the top producers of the day for the most part is dividing her fanbase, giving too much ammunition to her critics and isn't working for her commercially? Is it time to just forge her own path again and create a truly classic and original album that doesn't pander in any way? What is the point in making current music when no one outside of the fanbase is buying it? As always she seems to have the most success both critically and commercially when she is not chasing trends, though I do believe she always makes the music that she is currently most enjoying so what is Mirwais signifying to her in 2018 that is making her want to revisit him as a collaborator? I'm hoping she isn't having a 2011 moment where she picked a previous collaborator because she knew she was going to be time poor so needed someone she could trust to man her project for her. I'd be devastated if Mirwais is her Orbit for 2018 so she can focus on other things. She has spent a huge amount of time on MDNA Skin and I'm assuming on her script for the forthcoming film so I'm a little nervous. This will be a really good insight into if she truly cares about her music career still and if she is interested in creating new sounds. I was bowled over by Mirwais contributions to Confessions and how far removed those sounds were from Music and American Life. If they deliver even a tenth of that creativity then I will be happy.

I’d say there are many possible reasons, but most obvious might be that he provided her with her last number one single in the US, which was nearly 20 years ago. 😳😳😳

Yes but some of her albums also have other dominant themes, like spirituality (RoL, CoaD), the challenges of modern life (AL), family (LaP) etc. And often, these themes had prominent roles in their respective eras through single choices, interviews, performances and other media. Rebel Heart 'course-corrected' a little bit in this regard, but I'm hungry for more!

I feel like society is getting bogged down in the details of the mundane. We are fascinated by the drama of personal relationships so that we can be distracted from the bigger issues. It's why Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and the Chainsmokers do so well, with their voyeuristic songs that have so many intricate details about lovers. It's why Beyonce had us all guessing about who Becky with the good hair might be. People are enthralled by their own dinners, shenanigans and gym routines and want to share them with the world.

All the while, a spiritual void is growing, and I think Madonna is the perfect person to say something about that, to lead the way, to make us think a little deeper about our lives. She's very good at it, has done it countless times before, and I think it's time for her to do it again.

    Amen.
