Fans think Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’ predicted the coronavirus outbreak

Amid the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, many people are noting similarities between what is unfolding and the 2011 movie Contagion.

The Steven Soderbergh film, which stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard and Jude Law, depicts the outbreak of an epidemic as the scientific community races to contain a fictional virus, called MEV-1.

Fans have been comparing Contagion to the current coronavirus outbreak, with many plot elements mirroring what is going on in real life.

Among them is the spread of false information and how it exacerbates fear in the public, which is shown in the movie by Law’s conspiracy theorist Alan Krumwiede. His character spreads misinformation about the government having a cure, creating increased panic.

How dare you bring Goop and her terrible acting into this. My biggest fear about coronavirus is that we all start acting like gwenyth.

I shouldn't make light, but really, maybe 14 days in quarantine is JUST what the world NEEDS to reflect about what it's done. :fag:

I was thinking the same. Rather than have this go on and on for months and months, lets just make everyone stay home for 2 weeks. We already have the toilet paper ready.

I'm still trying to determine if I should cancel my vacation to Spain in May. I'm hoping that by then this whole thing would calm down or at least a vaccine is available for everyone.

It wont have calmed down by then, and we wont have a vaccine for 12 months. But there's no reason to cancel a trip to Spain. I'm still going to Japan, Singapore and South Korea in April. Just be careful about getting too close to people, wash hands like you have OCD. The best defence is common sense.

    Lovely.

Flights are being cancelled. Attractions are being closed. Travel advices are being raised. But I don't care ... I'm going to Japan and South Korea in April. You can't stop me, Mr corona-man!

Yeah Bernie has it in the bag. Unless something cataclysmic occurs between now and Super Tuesday, he’s gonna be the nominee.

    Bernie vs. Donald.

This is truly going to be an election for the ages. Both men command an unshakable, almost cult like level of support. I just can’t imagine how heated this is going be. It’s going to make 2016 look Sesame Street. But I will say, perhaps this is what the Democrats need. Someone who inspires unbridled passion the way Bernie does.

I can only imagine what the debates will be like between those two. Jesus Christ.

He has the most delegates in the bag, but won’t be enough for nomination. Convention will see everyone else get behind either Biden or (because he’ll give money to people) Bloomberg. I’d be happy with a Biden presidency - in the SC debate he’s the only one that seemed like an adult.

I think you have to be careful anywhere now in the world .

Confirmed cases ( Not including people who are being held for observations )

    Japan 33

    Thailand 25

    Singapore 24

    Germany 12

    France 6

    Australia 13

    China 24,387

    Canada 4

    Hong Kong 18

    S. Korea 18

    USA 11

    UK 2

It's pretty surreal here with everybody wearing face masks and carrying hand sanitiser with some restaurants and resorts turning away Chinese Tourists .

It was reported in the news that the situation would improve sometime after march / April . Otherwise god knows what will happen to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo .

Im going to Singapore and Japan in April. Hope it all gets sorted out soon.

Bernie all the way.  I love him, love his policies and passion.  A true alternative to the status quo of "Republicans lite " .  Far too many politicians  today talk of being " in the middle"  which is not much different to the corporate politicians and press that truly run things.

All true, but that, unfortunately, is why he wont ever be able to win the election proper. He's seen as too much of a risk for most americans. We saw that in Australia - all Bill Shortens policies were sound and sensible, but too many people got scared.

Sanders has one big problem, though: he is way toooooo old.

This. Not being ageist, but in all liklihood he wont go two terms, and so probably will have no time to actually achieve any of the things he's promising. Would be interesting to know who he's thinking of for a running mate...

Pete is so well spoken, well balanced, intelligent, clever etc. that he probably wont be nominated, which is pitty. US under Pete could do so much good in the world.

Idk why he has a hard time connecting with the black community. I'm hoping it's just that they're not really familiar with him yet.

I hope so too. Maybe a lot of people are still hooked on Biden just because he's associated with Obama (although clearly not in Iowa!), so maybe once there is a clear candidate that's not Biden, everyone will get behind them. I don't much about US primaries - do they get the same kind of turn-out as the election proper? Or do a lot of people not really care about primaries and just wait til November?

(PS: if some one can actually explain how these 'caucuses' work???)

  10. Pete FTW! I’ve always been team Pete. Not only is he the best looking ( 😉) but he seems the most inspiring. Reminds me a lot of JFK. so happy he has won Iowa and now hopefully others will see he is a real hope to get rid of trump.
but apparently the blacks won’t vote for him. Why? 🤷‍♂️

  11. I need someone to explain all this to me. The Australian government has been saying in the past few days that we are not withdrawing the australian troops that are in iraq because we need to "stay the course" - I can't even remember why we are there (Oh! was it WMDs?), but Im pretty sure the reason was not to have a war with iran? Is Iran supporting ISIS? Is Russia supporting Iran? I'm a bit worried as I have friends that live in Oman, Qatar and UAE, including airline crew that routinely fly over Iran. I hope Iran knows that most people in 'the west' dont want war. (Im not a big fan of sanctions either). What's the solution?

First class had the most carbon footprint

??? this is for planes, not trains. And rates like this are only averaged over many flights, not a single flight (or train) that is already going anyway.

But I accept your general point - if people must travel by plane or train, getting rid of premium classes would mean able to move the same number of people with less flights/carriages, and reduce emissions. Or at least, w should force people to pay for their emissions (so long as the money is used for genuine offsets, which in most cases is not the case).

but isn't DB already pretty low emission energy?

The economy is doing well under Trump because Obama set him up for success. I can't begin to imagine the state of this country if Trump had been handed the mess Bush left behind. The economy stayed on a pretty steady incline during the entire Obama presidency. Trump should bow at Obama's feet (where he belongs) because "the economy" is the only jewel in "his" crown.

It's funny because I never hated Trump before this. His rotten, selfish attitude was perfect for reality TV....I found him quite funny actually. Too bad he didn't stay in his own lane. Politics isn't (well, wasn't) the place for that type of nonsense.

Agreed. As an economist, I can say that nearly all of Trumps policies are bad for the economy, so anything going well is because of other factors, and without Trump things would probably be even better.

Yes, I definitely simplified it with my comment in regard to Bill Clinton BUT imo, he should've never had the opportunity to lie under oath about it because he should've never been questioned to begin with.....well, not by anyone besides Hillary perhaps.

It's very funny to see the Republicans join in absolute solidarity over a man that has done nothing but lie since he's been in office. Funny how doing a "shake down" of sorts of a president of a foreign country in hopes to have them meddle in our election is somehow seen as the "right" thing to do. Shows how low we've plummeted.

I also don't understand the Republicans motivation in this. I thought before 2016 they hated him (and he hated them). This could be their chance to get rid of him and get back control of their party. Thought they would love it if Pence took over. I guess theyre only supporting him because the polls still have them in front for the next election.

But still, impeachment was never a good idea, as he'll be able to say he was 'cleared' and it was all a witch hunt. Better to just keep the issue hot with the public up to election. They need to make voters think they were duped into voting for Trump in 2016 because of interference and propaganda, and are being duped again in 2020 through Trump's own actions. Nothing changes people's minds more than feeling stupid for thinking something. But now, Trump voters will just feel vindicated, and be angry that the deomcrats tried to undo their vote.

Now his name will ALWAYS be tied with "Clinton". :lmao: First because of the fluke 2016 election and now he'll sit alongside Bill for being one of the few presidents impeached.

I'm sure he and his cult just LOVE that.

And as usual, so much self projection in his Tweet. Fucking wimp. Since when are lies and collusion with a foreign government NOT reasons to be impeached?? Clinton got impeached for getting his dick sucked now THAT is a "terrible thing".

Clinton was impeached not for sexual acts, but for lying under oath about it. And in the end was not removed from office. So, sadly, lying under oath is OK. Now Trump just lies about everything...

Is it true this will backfire and the angry republican public will steam forward and elect Trump in 2020?

    Hillary will run 😉

Sadly, the democrats have been all principle (and correct) on this, but have played the politics all wrong. THe senate will vote it down, and the whole thing will be used against the democrats in the election and not only will trump be returned, but democrats will lose the majority in the house. this is the sad state of america today 😞

I want Pete Buttigieg to president. Can't we all get a vote??

I find it so alarming that a government could introduce a new law that creates a right to discriminate (both to actually discriminate in terms of employment etc, but also a right to say things that are offensive and hurtful). I thought government's were supposed to protect its people, not help in oppressing them....

I find it strange that ScoMo always bangs on about being a Christian - has he not read the * where all Jesus ever talks about is giving to the poor and helping the most needy in the community, and treating everyone (EVERYONE) with kindness. He certainly does not practice what he claims to believe.

i'm not really sure why this had to be so public or so messy. it's not like he's taylor swift fighting for her masters. putting aside my disappointment that madonna obviously didn't contribute a whole lot to my favorite part of the song, spooner clearly says that mirwais had a "clear concept, lyric, and melody" - so it seems like he cleaned up mirwais's english, which is more like translating than "co-writing," and was the demo singer. mirwais ended up giving the track to madonna, which is something he's done with his own songs in the past. it might be true that legally he had to get casey's permission in order to do that, but madonna's team was very generous to more than double their initial offer and 15% of the royalties. sorry it's not 1995, casey. record sales are in the toilet and madonna doesn't do well with streaming - so you're going after her touring revenue? if you're in it for the money, maybe work with taylor and not mirwais next time?
