  1. There are so many favorite eras looks wise its hard to pick, but this will probably always be my favorite picture of her. She is just beyond stunning and "natural" looking in it. I could stare at it all day.

I feel the same way. This is my favorite look. Just perfection.

I also do love the cover photos of her first album. So many others...

  2. Great article. My theory is that women have a weak spot when it comes to love and acceptance. They will compete for it. Ones who have never felt either one growing up feel as if they don't even belong in the game. There are plenty of younger women self loathing right now too for reasons other than age and they tend to worship women who ARE loved.

but getting back to competition among women..in competition some women would get nasty and it used to be socially acceptable to call a young woman names and talk about her if she was sexually active. They could criticize the way she dressed, talked and say that she wasn't acting how a proper lady should act.

Things were changing at a slow pace and then started to change drastically and then with the whole "don't trust anyone over 30," jazz. So it became anyone under a certain age can be free to make their own decisions about how to dress and how to act.

It's not socially acceptable now to tell a young woman how to act or dress. Since there is no stigma attached to dropping your older wife for a more worthy of love younger model, men don't feel pressured to remain faithful. Older women now in the love and acceptance department are left to either celebrate only their past glories or simply go into the recycling bin. They have become powerless.

Older women are now left with a kind of self loathing when it comes to their looks and age and want to please the society that has placed a set of rules upon them. Instead of being respected for their wisdom and beauty they are no longer apart of the game. We decide what time you cannot have children anymore regardless if the fact that all women are different. We decide what you can and can not wear. We will decide where you work and don't even think you can date a younger man. If you have a child later on in life you will be called grandmother not mother. This is hurtful to older women looking for love and acceptance outside of themselves and they will again criticize and attack other women who don't play by the rules, especially if they look good doing it as there is a bit of jealousy there.

Believe me these women wish to be just as free as Madonna but are scared of criticism and not being loved or accepted. Mentally they know that everyone should be proud of who they are but their emotions and societies rules get in the way.

  3. Not consciously. I feel as if I live on the same planet as her so to speak. I don't think about things that don't matter until society reminds me of the script. I think that happens a lot with Madonna. She forgets where she is.

I am still me no what physical changes come about and will always be me.

  4. Look at the Beatles in the 60's just as one example. People thought their hair was controversial. John said they were bigger than Jesus which certainly caused controversy. They smoked in interviews which for the time was a bit controversial. They openly talked about drugs. Don't tell me they wouldn't have made some interesting videos for their later music. They spoke openly about their opposition to the Vietnam war. John posed naked on an album cover...I could on. Of course those guys were just speaking their minds and expressing themselves artistically unlike Madonna.

Of course that IS what they were doing and it's also what Madonna has been doing.

WeboGirl mentioned a couple. I like Skin have never bought Madonna's music because of some controversry people find in Madonna's work. Most of the time I didn't get what the controversy was.

  5. I appreciate what you are saying agclef but I read the title of the thread as "None of this matters because we have to face facts , she's not gonna be played on radio or have chart success anymore."

That sounds like be happy because you can't win. The charts mattered to me in the 1980's as much as they do now. I listened to top 40 to hear new music period, not to cheer on my chosen pop star. Radio was more important because besides MTV I didn't have easy access to new music.

On a personal level I love what I love. I don't l love it in defiance because I have to "face facts." Her music still has to connect with me or impress me on some level.

My only problem with Billboard and radio is not whether or not her music connects with other people. My problem is how proud they are of announcing how Madonna is not relevant to younger listeners while making sure she doesn"t even get a chance to be relevant to a new listener. At least from their output.

Older stars when I was a teen got a chance on radio and the charts If the music connected with the listener. Not to mention the worship they got from the older stations playing their discography A-Z on holiday weekends or playing full albums. That's how I became very familiar with the music of the 60's and 70's and even 50's.

Have their been Madonna A-Z's on radio stations and I've missed them? I don't accept that people are not interested or interested in something until they are properly informed. Otherwise how they feel is not based on their own thoughts and feelings but what they are told to like and dislike.

How dare radio and Billboard work hard to manipulate the listeners likes and dislikes. I'm not saying "oh well, I need to face facts." They are trying to manipulate the public. I have a problem with that. I like the public having all the information they can get and then making an informed decision.

I agree with you and your celebration of Madonna and her work but I am very defiant of the "let's face facts." Madonna can evolve and leave behind these now limited forms of musical information and because they have proudly said they will not give Madonna's music a chance I would so love to see her pull ahead of them in regards to her new music being heard. One of the beauties of Madonna's career has been the media's inability to manipulate the public in their acceptance and love of Madonna and her music.

Loving Madonna has always been separate from her chart success. I just don't care for them trying to manipulate people and what they would most like is for people to "face facts." I'll face facts, radio and the charts have become even more ageist and sexist I am not letting it go.

  6. Stephen I always loved doing your top 50 list at our former forum residence and would love participating in it again if that is what you will do.

I will say that it might be interesting doing a non singles list. That way it would be different from the one Whoop does who has probaly done the list for some time at this forum.

I am interested in what my non single list would look like since my favorite song is a single. But then I would like to see my list of her whole discography so I don't know! Well after Whoop does his list I can just mesh them together.

I would be happy with anything you want to do. I know very well the wonderful job you do. If we do a whole discography I do vote for a top 100. The cuts after my top 25 are devastating. If we do non singles I think a top 50 will be okay.

I look forward to whatever you do Stephen! :)

  7. Although visually stunning the GGW opening felt like looking into the past and a purging of some kind. The whole MDNA tour and album felt like that to me.

Iconic feels victorious and rising above the restraints put upon you in a more positive way. I loved the build up to Iconic and it's message overall.

I have a hard time choosing these things because I feel they were both important and yes the GGW opening was interesting and visually stunning as well as the choreography but Iconic covered all the bases for me. It had all those elements and the message is more meaningful for more than just Madonna. I felt MDNA was a more personal battle. Which is cool so...

  8. Iconic was just as brilliant and powerful as I knew the song was. I loved the performance of Heartbreak City and LDLHA. I love her emotional theatrics and on a small scale.

This was the closest I have seen Madonna. I was not far from the end of the right side of the cross and when she came towards the end of it during Like A Virgin I was in awe of how beautiful she is. The performance vintage 1920's I believe?, was so entertaining! That outfit was amazing and she looked fabulous! I also loved seeing the stage performance of Living For Love. I loved everything. So much fun and Holy Water was a great performance.

Also loved the warmth of watching the fan art video while she sang Rebel Heart and her charming performance of La Vie en Rose.
