  1. Living For Love Love when the piano kicks in. Sounds robotic sometimes. Her voice in the chorus! Madonna is determined to move in a positive direction. Makes me feel better when down. 9

Devil Pray It feels nostaligic. Like going back in time. Madonna knows all too well what addiction can do to people and possibly what causes it. The guitar! Her voice is crystal clear! Not completely feeling the distorted voice. It's cool. 9

Ghosttown Heart! Beautiful tone to Madonna's voice. Strong and lovely. Caring. People need to hear it. Mad mad mad world a slight too much? 9 1/2

Unapologetic Bitch Love the chorus. Love the little "did you?" It gets better as it goes along. It seems like it grows in intensity. Grown on me the most. "Little" tedious overall. 8 1/2

Illuminati Love the robotic voice only for the effect. Like when she plays roles in songs. It's fun to listen to. It's a little without feeling but of course it is. 8

Bitch I'm Madonna Sarcastic, which I confess I love. My dark side. The music is great. I love the teasing. I love the lyrics. I feel as if the "who do you think you are" can be asked by the critic and the one being criticized. That's my absolute favorite part of the song and I find that intensely empowering. Nicki is wonderful. We go hard or we go home<---love that. You're gonna love this, cant touch this...not so much. There is a huge difference in having confidence in who you are and thinking you are better than everyone. Bitch I'm Madonna and I'm proud of it. 9

Hold Tight I usually don't like power ballads which this almost sounds like. Love the Ray of Lightish intro. Anthemic, typical 80's, This song represents the best of those though. Bridge is exceptional. 8 1/2

Joan Of ArcI don't like overly sappy expressed songs which I think takes way from the strong feelings they are talking about. Like I love the deep emotions but I am more critical at how they are expressed. What's funny about Joan Of Arc is her expressing deep feelings in a very laid back almost Carole King kind of vibe way. I kinda like the upbeat sound with the lyrics though. I especially like "I can't be a superhero right now." I don't understand the "not yet" unless she is saying I am not yet that strong. It's an exceptional song overall though. 9

Iconic Love the message. Should be played at every self help get together. The chorus is glorious! Not sure what the ironic means. Maybe feeling like this inspite of insecurities? The song has powerful energy and feels like a single to me. 9

Heartbreak City The only one I can't get into although I can see the quality. I think I would like this better with just a piano. The music almost makes it sound like it's trying to sound empowering. Very dramatic and a good example of how I perceive the feelings expressed. She sounds like she is taking on a role. 7

Body Shop Breezy, clever, like the light sounds. A welcome relief after the sadness in Heartbreak City. 9

Holy Water It's catchy. I don't get the overly explicit lyrics. I love the bless yourself and genuflect. I think that's funny. I like the Bitch get off my pole too. Not a fan of the chorus? 7 1/2

Inside Out I love when this song starts. One of the biggest heart songs on the album. Bothers me a little when it seems to want to go into another direction at moments in the song. Beautiful bridge. Would love to hear an acoustic version. 8 1/2

Wash All Over Me LOVE LOVE LOVE the opening lyrics in this song. I could stand there and recite the lyrics. Love the beauty in the chorus. The lyrics throughout. Love the gentle but powerful music during the verses. The music in the chorus becomes more encompassing but the feeling is so powerful that it works. 10

Best Night Very Relaxed and nice to hear. Sexy, love the background music. This is the most Bedtime Stories song I hear on the album. Nice ambience. 7 1/2

Veni Vidi Vici catchy and sweet. The inclusion of the song titles is cool but it's not why I like it. Love the "music saved my life, "and Nas expressing it as well to cross with Madonna's experience and then goes into his own personal experience. I like the different energies. 8 1/2

S.E.X. I actually find this funnier than Holy Water. I like the elements included. Funny, almost making it scary. Without taking away the genuine integrity of the human experience of sex, people sometimes take it way too seriously. 7 1/2

Messiah This one grabs me instantly. LOVE LOVE LOVE the heartbeat. A hint of melancholy, mysterious, mystical, quiet determination. Beautiful inclusion of the orchestra. It's my Falling Free of this album. There are some intense ponderings in Madonna that I love hearing expressed whether they are her own or taking on a role. 10

Rebel Heart It represents Madonna as she was from the beginning and still is and also the duality of the album. I like the even expression in the song. It's comforting. 9

  2. lets make no mistake here: I LOVE IT ALL!!!

you are talking to a person that actually does love Hey You, Jimmy Jimmy and Love Makes the World Go Round. Pretender, I Know It and Cant Stop are the jam MALIKA!!!

all im saying is, when i was listening to the OFFICIAL release, the loss of the pop elements on Wash and Rebel was a little disappointing. i will live because i make my own playlist.

the final versions are great, they just lost that Oomph. that fabulous strength and ability to lift off the ground and fly.

    theyre nice, easy listening ballads

    now.

I remembered you liked Hey You and thought about that. :) I love Hey You for the concept of the song and think it has a lovely message. I liked the music of the demo for WAOM and I agree Living For Love is the most "pop" song on the album. The album kinda reminds me of Erotica in a way.

I think it depends greatly on how one interprets the song on which version they prefer. The album version affects me very deeply while the demo neutralizes those feelings.

  3. I can't find the demo for Rebel Heart. I only heard a snippet so can't compare. I do know I care more about what is being said in a song. Some songs I think are drowned out by overpowering music. It's too much.

I would imagine Madonna's vision for them are the ones on the album. I can't see her compromising her vision because of what someone else did.

You know the leaks really damaged the release of this album. She doesn't have to deal with enough I guess. It's ridiculous but she really needs to stay off the computer. For my own personal enjoyment I couldn't be happier with the album.

  4. I'm still trying to figure out how Bitch I'm Madonna and Unapologetic Bitch are not particularly distinguishable from a prior review. They are two different vibes to me. They both contain the word "bitch" I guess?

It's not that I have a problem with a reviewer's opinion. I just don't get where their opinion is coming from Sometimes. I understand if someone doesn't care for a certain vibe in a song but I care when that opinion is turned into Madonna didn't care or has superficial reasons for creating a song.

For some it's easy to figure out where their opinion is coming from and I move on but you read some reviews and you get most of what they are saying but then your like "huh?"

I am very suspicious of people.

  5. ^ The thing is, it's shows how some have a narrow view of what Madonna was trying to do and that goes for a lot of things in her career. It's amazing how some stars today are seen as inspired by Madonna but really just represent the view of a lot of the media and general public. On top of them being a shell of who Madonna is they are praised for it. Madonna doesn't discourage this though. She allows people to think whatever they want.

Most people see what is on the surface and run with it. You have to look beyond.

  6. I was obsessed with these songs when they came out. I loved Who's That Girl because it sounded so different and so uniquely Madonna. Causing A Commotion is just great and The Look Of Love is so romantic. I only recently got into Can't Stop and yeah at the time I really wanted all the songs on one of her albums.

I don't think Madonna hates the songs she hasn't performed on tour. I think that Madonna thinks very much in the present and that influences her choices. I think she has to relate to whatever the song means to her on any current tour. Causing A Commotion was definately relevant to how she must have been feeling during the BAT. If some songs are recurring during tours then I think she must be feeling strongly in whatever the songs means for her at that current time. I don't think that necessarily makes them her favorites but I could be wrong.

Most people look back just for the sake of looking back whether what they are looking back on is relevant to what is going on with them currently or not. It's sentimental. Most fans are, I am as well but I believe that is why we haven't heard from some songs. I don't equate that to her hating them though.

  7. ^ You can hear what I think you are talking about earlier in the song as well. That's interesting that you guys think it's horses. It doesn't sound like horses to me but I can't make up my mind what it sounds like. The closest I came to was sea foam coming on shore. I like the idea of horses as well.

  8. Thing is the b-side story was never told by Madonna so it could be made up. Could be that she was writing for the I'm Breathless soundtrack and thought the song did not work on it so she thought it would be more suitable as a b-side than record execs changed her mind. I can see her writing it for Warren Beatty because of all the stars she namechecks in it, for her he represented this. I remember her saying she wrote it on a plane from New York to Los Angeles (or LA to NYC)

Absolutely! This interview is truly precious.

I envisioned Dick Tracy as more of a 30's setting and Madonna certainly references stars that came to fame in the 30's. It evolved to other stars she admired.

  9. I want to talk more in depth about each song but it's 2:12 in the morning and I want to give the songs another listen. I spent most of Best Night recovering from Wash All Over Me so another listen is needed. Amazing album. Just have to mention again how much Wash All Over Me affected me and Messiah was my comfort blanket. Thank you Madonna for this album.

  10. The only negative thing I can say about the Ray Of Light era is that her interviews at the time kinda made me feel as if she was questioning her own past work. I was not comfortable with that at all. I was happy for Madonna in her personal life because she seemed happy and of course everyone "loved her" so I guess everything was good now.

When Ray Of Light came out I had already been a fan of Madonna for sixteen years so it was all very

    different for me.

If you want to check yourself in regards to how you affect others in your personal life or in life itself that is your personal business and does affect how close people want to be to you. Art for me is an expression of everything that is going on inside of you. There is no right or wrong in art. In life people hold you back everyday from saying what you think or talking about how you feel. That's why I love art.

If someone's work doesn't connect with me I move on. I would never go up to an artist and say you shouldn't have done that. I want an artist to be real more than anything. What I mean by real is that they are presenting something how they would like to present it. I personally got a lot out of Ray Of Light and it did feel like an authentic expression of Madonna's feelings at that moment. It would be very sad if the wonderful feelings expressed in Ray Of Light were used to step all over other valid feelings.

I guess it all depends on what you care about when critiquing art. Some people are more interested in the technical side of things, some commercial, some emotional..

I am personally drawn to feelings that seem very real and ironic expressions in art. This is why I am such a fan of Madonna.

In her albums I look forward to her voice and her way of expressing what she wants to say. That's what I care about above everything.
