  1. Vogue MDNA was lush, cinematic, and simply...everything. And like so many songs - finally was performed as close to it's original composition as it could get. Coupled with full on Gaultier...it was the element of the whole MDNA show that was quintessential Madonna. Utter perfection...at least to me.

But yes, like EY and others, was an edit. Vogue should NEVER be edited. Sacrilege.

That being said...Some Girls certainly deserved a performance. Like Girl Gone Wild, on the album it's ok...played on a speaker system it's great...but live (like GGW) would have been unbelievable. You can just feel it's one of those songs that needs to be done live....and would have taken on a whole other life.

Should have come right after Vogue, or Candy Shop...esp. if this was to a be a new 'sassy, runway' version.

On the other hand, as much as I like the performance of Revolver...the song itself isn't a favorite of mine. I wouldn't of minded seeing Some Girls instead of Revolver, right after GGW. Sure, might not go quite with the gun metaphor that Revolver uses so well (obviously), but I could seriously see bad ass bitches wielding guns going with Some Girls.....

It's funny, she could really fit a few more songs in her shows, but she doesn't... and the songs that get full length treatment (or extended versions) vs edits is always kind of a 'scratch your head' moment when it comes to M.

  2. I've always loved this remix. Didn't even know it was so reviled until I came here. haha...

Plus, it's pretty damn close to the original orchestration anyway. A little pumping up of the bass, etc...not much else done to it. So why do so many hate it?

And I've always enjoyed Missy...so hey, why not? Plus, Missy has always been a huge Madonna fan, and has always had her back. It's not like we're dealing with someone who turned around and threw M under the bus, or anything...

It was fun. Can't we Madonna fans have silly fun anymore?

  3. What about the millions of casual fans that bought LAV, TB and LAP who were in limbo during Erotica and BS only to be alienated for good once she went all "weird" and and started dabbling with "that techno shit" (hey, that's what I've heard all her post-1997 work referred to as many times). As successful as ROL, Music and COADF were, commercially, none of them QUITE matched her golden years with the LAV-TB-LAP trilogy. In an era when Diamond certs were handed out like air and water in the US, Music's comparatively "paltry" 3 million copies sold sort of pales in comparison so let's not act like she wasn't past her REAL heyday by this point anyways. Even critically, if you pit the 80's SINGLES vs late 90's-early 00's singles, the 80's singles will prevail every time. So.....why didn't she go with a more traditional pop sound like she embraced in the 80's vs the "future disco" and heavy electronica influenced sound she chose in the 90's/00's? Surely, the more experimental sound she was exploring at the time was NEVER going to connect on quite the same level as those more accessible 80's classics. Why didn't Madonna care to keep THOSE fans on board?

I think she does what she wants and if it connects great and if it doesn't oh well. That's not to say she won't throw out some sort of damage control for the release that follows a "flop" (see COADF) but I don't think it's the end all be all for her, especially these days when album sales at best are just "good". Madonna changes her sound and image far too much to keep the same group of fans happy over and over. The "fair weather" fans that you are referring to were never going to consistently be with her for the long haul. They come and go....always have. Funny thing is, with 4M/HC, I personally know of fans that only care for her 80's/early 90's work that FINALLY liked some new music from her. Don't you think after 10 years of doing "sophisticated dance" and electronica, it was ok for her to do a frivolous, somewhat "gimmicky" dance floor stomper?? It was time for her to change her sound. I would agree with you that some of the best music she's ever done was in the ROL-COADF period but I was thrilled to have her drastically change her sound. It seemed like ages since she had done such a jarring reinvention of her music.

She can never seem to please everybody...and why should she?

I love that the last two albums are cheeky, fun, frivolous pop albums...much like the early days. Why can't she still do that? Because she's in her 50s?

And considering the state of most current pop, she still does it better than most everyone else.

  4. It's funny... everyone goes on about Madonna not having a big voice, not being a "true singer", "she can't sing", her songs are not hard to sing and anyone can do it, etc... And yet, 99% of the time, covers of Madonna songs (the few that there are) are HORRIBLE.

Whether it's how the song is being sung, the useless and unnecessary vocal acrobatics (as if that's what makes a good singer nowadays...), arrangement, etc... and as proven by Mariah's useless commentary... they all just do not "get it".

Madonna's songs were never meant for vocal showmanship. They are about storytelling...performance...attitude...confessions...songs to be sung from the heart, not from the head.

But so much of the industry, and the public... and certainly with the ridiculous abundance of tv talent shows with everyone vying for their 15 minutes, to show off, to win... seem consumed with vocal acrobatics, and showing off, belting and high notes...as if that is what makes a great singer.

But sadly it seems forgotten that music, and singing, is so much more than that. It's one thing to be an entertainer...it's another to be an artist.

Just goes to show how this person that everyone says "can't sing", can't even have her songs properly sung by "real" singers...

  5. None of these publications have the real numbers. M's team is simply not going to give them out. Hell, the estimates we calculate here as fans, and in terms of what percentage of what she gets, is probably off too.

Overall, most of these estimations are far too conservative.

And Madonna is smart. Her income does not come from her 'brand' alone. There's probably a shit load of money in investments, businesses, etc. she has a hand in that we know nothing about.

Honestly, those articles have a tone like they just don't want to say she's a billionaire. They just don't want to give her the credit. But they're more than happy to build up Justina fucking Bieber, Micheal, Jay-Z, and all the men.

Seriously, Justina Bieber being paraded around as some sort of example to be measured by (an arrogant little shit that probably has no real say in how any aspect of his career is handled...whose mommy has to go out and fight his battles) vs. the most successful (and business/marketing minded genius) female popular artist of ALL TIME...?

    Get the fuck out.

  6. Hmmm, interesting. I really don't notice very many of those issues when I listen to it, but ... Madonna always seems to have so many different edits/versions of one song, that I sometimes just get confused as to what is what anymore.

The only thing I did notice is that Justify My Love is a bit distorted/too loud... In fact, most mixing today is WAY too loud. The "loudness wars" needs to stop. If only studio engineers could mix closer to the warmth of vinyl, with the middle ranges brought in, and the top and bottom aspects toned down.

The edits on Erotica, Dress You Up, Cherish and a few others where kind of noticeable...

I also agree that I would have swapped out a few tracks for ones like "I'll Remember", "This Used To Be My Playground", "Deeper and Deeper", "Bedtime Story", "Human Nature", "Nothing Really Matters", etc.

Though for being a greatest hits, it's kind of like they wanted it to be played like a dance record...so maybe that's why more ballads were left off. But "Deeper" def should have been there.

Also, the order is a bit weird...but I have to admit I'm usually never a fan of the ordering of songs on any Madonna album/comp. It always feels a bit too random...

In the end, I never understand why they do these edits...it seems so unnecessary. There already are good solid edits as in radio edits, 7" mixes (which def should have been used), even some good video edits that deserved to be remastered.

There was just no need to butcher up songs. Only guess is they did it to fit as many as they could on the run time (which is why I'm beginning to hate CDs.)

  7. These lists are always such bullshit. Even if they put your favs higher up on some lists...the rest are always still so ... off.

And I'm probably going to piss some folks off when I say this...but these lists always seem to be written by middle-aged straight white guys.

The rockers are usually always dominating the top of the lists.

Non-white artists barely crack the top, sans a few.

It's pretty much male-dominated at the top.

And the pop / dance / r&b artists are always towards the bottom.

I can't be the only one who always notices that with these kinds of lists...

  8. I've never understood the hate for this song. It reminds me of M's older tracks on the earlier albums, where there was a song or two that seemed like a 'WTF' when listening to the album as a whole...but was ultimately just Madonna having some silly fun. I don't think they were ever meant to be taken seriously. I think we forget that at times as Madonna fans. We expect everything to be political, heavy, sexy, etc... but Madonna built a lot of her career on being cheeky and silly, with a middle finger raised 'don't take it all so serious' attitude.

I don't know...I actually like B-day song for what it is...fun, silly fluff. And honestly, the composition itself is actually really nice for a throwback kind of tune. I think it's the lyrics that people go 'wtf' at...

As for MIA's involvement, is kind of a  moment... perhaps she was added on as an after-thought. Though her addition on GMAYL is also a  moment...I'd expect MIA to be on something more like Some Girls, I'm A Sinner, or even IDGA instead of Nicki...

  9. Just might be my most favorite Madonna song of all time. But no shocker there.

I've heard some argue that the sound is dated, etc...whatever. To me, it's classic. That sound is classic. As much as Billie Jean, Let It Be, or Jail House Rock is to Micheal, The Beatles, and Elvis... Vogue is Madonna's iconic and signature number.

Every performance of it has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. The epitome of theatrical pop performance art done to the highest level.

As for the song, the composition itself is just amazing. Listen to the instrumental. It's built more like a musical stage number than a mere pop song.

It's just lush...and stunning...and elegant... like if life itself was a Broadway musical, this would be the draw-dropping opening or closing number.

    It's just everything.

    Iconic. Classic. Madonna.

  10. I'll get shit for this...but I don't think Madonna is a bad actor. There are FAR worse all over television. Like other aspects of Madonna's image (age, etc.), it's one of those things the public has latched on to that they sort of subconsciously believe, and enjoy making fun of... but that, to me, is because most of the public can't think for themselves anyway.

Does that mean M can do anything? No, she's not versatile in that sense. I think it takes a very specific kind of a role, with the right kind of film, to make it work for her as an actress. DSS, League, Evita prove that. And Breathless was great because it literally was her persona at that time. I think when her pop persona/re-inventions are somewhat tied in well with the acting roles (in the right films), it kind of works. Probably why something like Sunset Blvd would also be a good fit. But I do think her overall image/persona is so unbelievably strong in the public's mind that even if she does very well in a film, they can't separate the two...and the media doesn't help.

Anyway, as for this little interview...probably just GLAAD coverage. It'll be 30 sec or so, maybe a longer clip on the website.

  11. oh c'mon...I think she's nailed it. It is exaggerated, of course, in terms of capturing her actual personality...but when this lady does Cher, as well, it's in the same vein... and that's the comedy...that's the point. I don't think it's supposed to be a 100% imitation. It's a caricature of these women.

  12. I thought it was hilarious! The voice is pretty good...but the facial expressions and body language are spot on.

Love the "because I'm the queen of the freakin' universe...hahahahmmmmmm. Be real. Be real" , "a female African-American feminist novelist...I love it, it's ground breaking. hmmmhmmm".

    too damn funny. :dead:

  13. It's just a matter of taste. No one artist is going to hit it out the ballpark every time, no matter what your medium or style is.

I also think it depends on the creative direction of the project at hand, and what kind of look/vibe/aesthetic they are going for.

I also like that each photographer has their own style and feel...and that Madonna is diverse in what she puts out (compared to most other artists that basically just do the same look every time, just with different outfits).

I like the harshness, masculinity, and 'concept' driven vibe of Klein, when appropriate (particularly in video).

I like the glossy, vanity feel of the MDNA work. It works for the vibe of that album. I think M and M are amazing...and that Interview Mag shoot was iconic. And GGW...

  14. I think Klein's work is hit or miss...but overall I like it. He did the opening segments of The RIT (The Beast Within) and Future Lovers (CT), right? And he did the video as well? I think those two pieces are absolutely brilliant...and some of M's most iconic 'artistic' moments. The confessions visuals were great too.

I would say that Mert and Marcus's work (The Interview Mag spread - which is, to me, one of her best shoots of her entire career, the MDNA art, GGW video, etc.) are visually more appealing... but I think Klein works for very specific "concept" heavy projects that require that harsher, more masculine feel...esp. in video (not so much still photography).

...as for "homoerotic muscle worship...muscled underwear models"...what's wrong with that? ;)

  15. I totally forget about EPIX. I think I get that, but never watch it. It's a barely known channel.

Still, just in terms of the shows themselves, I'm surprised Sticky didn't get a broadcast network showing over Confessions, considering it's a colorful, upbeat positive show for a wider audience.

When did Confessions air? Was that Thanksgiving?

  16. Considering she had no network broadcast last time, I wonder if they'd even bother airing it at all. I suspect it will air in Europe on various channels. It will be interesting to see what they do in the U.S.

True. Funny how a much more controversial show like Confessions got a nationwide NBC broadcast...but the barely controversial at all, for all audiences Sticky and Sweet Tour did not get one...
