  1. They played the video for Frozen at a Wing Daddy's (chicken wing restaurant obvs). That's the second time it's played there.

My dad asked my sister who it was in the video and she replies Madonna (she loves the song and vid) and my dad's like "yeah, that's who I thought it was," while staring intently. He hates her tho.

    He calls her Marana

  2. Sometimes I like to think that Madonna's albums 'inform' each other and you can actually glean a lot of information as to what direction she might be going in her next album from the previous record.

"Justify my Love" set the groundwork for Erotica; the sung/spoken combination and of course the hip-hop element.

Erotica set the scene for Bedtime Stories in many ways; and those two records (by William Orbit's own admission) were instrumental for Ray of Light.

The 'folk-tronic' aspects of Music were explored in full depth on American Life.

Confessions was, admittedly, a 'reactionary' record. She did a complete 180 with that one.

Hard Candy was basically her trying to recapitulate Confessions but for the American market. So out was disco and Europop and instead came in what was the biggest thing in the USA in the past couple of years.

MDNA was more of a 'return to basics' kind of album in some ways. She wanted to re-visit the pure headless ecstasy and joy of her earliest work and perhaps the first album (hence the appropriate title) with Solveig's sound and she went back to Orbit as a tried and tested co-songwriter and producer.

This next album will be interesting in many ways. The return of more introspective mid-tempo songs and ballads on MDNA was no coincidence - "Love Spent", "Masterpiece", "Falling Free" and to a lesser extent, "I Fucked Up" and "Best Friend". The centrepiece of the MDNA Tour was the sprawling "Like a Virgin"/"Love Spent" performance. I wouldn't be surprised if she goes down this route for the next album. So in that sense it won't be 'ballad type' and get Madonna in a floral frock straight of The English Roses reading in 2003. The concept may be more subversive and unique cf. the MDNA Tour "Like a Virgin" performance.

And no, I don't think she'll be covering up any time soon. And nor do I want her to. So if those stupid critics that think a 'ballad album' will mean that she'll be covering they've got another thing coming. :wow:

A hundred times yes. Add to that the performance of Between the Bars and her use of the Korzenowski tracks for Secret Project, and it seems like that's the obvious direction the album will take. I really hope she goes that way, cuz LAV and BTB are beyond beautiful. I'd be more than happy with a solid ten tracks of SULTRYdonna. :wow:

  3. There have been many great points made in this topic. Naturally, I don't know what Madonna was feeling but through experience, I know that people do change and compromise when they are in love and especially when they are married. That is not the sign of weakness that people think it is either, without some sort of compromise, relationships would never work. I also remember an interview that Madonna did with Molly Meldrum in 1985 discussing her marriage to Sean Penn and she said being in love makes you less selfish and you have to think of the other person and what they feel. In general, people are always more carefree to do whatever they want when they are single.

Great points as always, Jan.

I'm not starting anything. People shouldnt take things personal just like I didn't take some of the bitchy comments personal.

    Just kiddin, papito. Calm down.
  4. Yeah but sometimes when writing a song it's powerful to capture the moment. That doesn't make it literal. Or more accurately it doesn't make it a comprehensive picture. It's dangerous to take one song capturing what could be one tiny moment and turning it I to a lifetime of explanation. I'm not denying that there's truth in the song but it's like taking one still frame from a film and developing a film synopsis from it...

I don't think IDGA is reflective of how she felt during the Ritchie years, but more about how she felt after them. I'm sure she was content with being the woman Guy might've wanted her to be at the time, but after the divorce, she was like "What was it for?" I've heard complaints of a divorced mother many times before, so it all seems plausible imo.

  5. If they refused to compromise it wouldn't have been a marriage.

Well, no shit, but obviously Madonna viewed things differently in retrospect or else songs like I Don't Give A or performances like Like A Virgin/Love Spent wouldn't exist. And I don't see how he lyrics of I Don't Give A can be taken any differently when they specifically say

I tried to be a good girl,

I tried to be your wife

Diminished myself and I swallowed my light

I tried to become all that you expect of me

And if it was a failure I don't give a

I get that you can't take songs like Incredible to be literally about her divorce, but c'mon. IDGA is as literal as it gets.

  6. You can't discredit all of I Don't Give A because she says she tweets on elevators. The lyrics are telling of the relationship in the same way Best Friend and I Fucked Up are.

I don't think Madonna was any less "Madonna" in the Ritchie years, but she definitely was a different type of Madonna. Less aggressive and controversial. That's the territory that comes with marriage and motherhood, I guess, but obviously Madonna felt some pressure to change from Guy, even though it was her decision.
