  1. Oprah, Oprah, Oprah.... she needs to do Oprah or Ellen....

Why? I think David Letterman is a great show for her. Oprah and Ellen seem to appeal to an older more conservative audience partly because they are on during the day. Letterman appeals to a younger trendier audience because it's on later at night. I don't think the housewives who watch Oprah and Ellen care about Madonna.

  2. She should have cared just a little more, that would have been enough to piss certain fans off. Hopefully the next album will do the dirty work.

What's the value of pissing fans off? Don't you realize Madonna needs all her fans to continue to be successful? Hard Candy was one of her lowest selling records, it didn't do as well as Confessions. I didn't like her voice as well on HC as Confessions and AL, but I"m not sure if it's her voice has changed, so much as the way the record was produced. But to me her voice still sounds good, for me it was more the songwriting on HC that was the problem. But I do agree she sounds bored and detached from her music now. Just compare the vocals on It's So Cool to the ones on Celebration and Revolver and the difference is obvious.

  3. His comments don't even made sense. Someone said if you're going to bitch, at least make sure what you say is funny. His comments aren't funny at all. Madonna looks nothing like Rachel Zoe. And Rachel Zoe gone wrong doesn't make sense because Rachel doesn't ever look good. So how can you be Rachel gone wrong, when she is always wrong!

And I don't get his comment about the blow dryer. Is he referring to Madonna's hair or Jesus' hair?

If he had said she looked like Faye Dunaway gone wrong, that while bitchy would at least make sense.

  4. absolutely

also the instrumentation is way too polished and screams "we had more money in the studio" - while the vocals are too smooth where something rawer was needed

    I am honestly quite disappointed

True that! It reminds me of something a friend of mine who is a studio musician once told me. He said usually the more money that is spent on an album or a song in the studio. the less successful the singer or band is becoming.

It might not be so bad if the backing track wasn't as loud and her vocals were more up front. Who produced this?

  5. the demo (Ravaugn's vocal) sounds A LOT better

I agree. I think this style of singing does not suit her voice at all. She sounds bored and dead on it. I like her voice when it is warmer, more open and expressive like on ROL.

  6. Kurt and danny thank you for being the voice of reason for those of us who enjoyed HC. Most fans here must work for Fox news uninformed(HC is a flop cuz it didn't sell well in US) and bias(I hate HC and the tims!!!). oh and I just nonticed kurt420 as in :) "

So if someone doesn't like HC they work for Fox News. I really had no opinion of Timbaland one way or the other. When everyone here was bashing Madonna for working with him, I said let's wait and hear the album. I thought it might be good since I believe in Madonna and have liked everyone of her other albums. But somehow the Madonna I loved just got erased by Timbaland. I have no bias against him since really I didn't know much about him. But I know what I hear and what I like and HC wasn't it!

  7. Danny speaks the truth guys! Always remember that!! :) People go to Madonna shows for the extravagance of it all, that's how she's earned the repuatation she has as a live performer.

No, it's the combination of the extravagant show and the music. You just said people didn't like DWT because they hated the setlist. You have to have a show aspect and also great music.

There are only so many extravagant things you can come up with. Eventually you end up doing the same things. Madonna's shows can't get bigger, the only way she can change and grow is to go simpler.

I believe in Madonna. I think she can pull off a different kind of show. I think you might be surprised how much people would love it. I'm not saying she should just stand there and sing. Just put a little more focus on the music.

  8. I'm not saying she should do a low energy show with nothing but ballads and acoustic songs. That would be boring no matter who the artist is. Every concert needs to have a mix of uptempo and slow songs. I guess I just want a different type of uptempo music and dancing. I like what you said about using her classical dance training. I would like to see some choreography drawing on modern dance as well. Recently, her choreography has just been the same as other pop stars. I want something that stands out and makes me go Wow!

For me, Madonna has not been just about the show aspect. For me, she is the perfect combination of the show aspect and the musical aspect. I don't want her to eliminate the show aspect. I just want her to beef up the musical aspect. On Sticky and Sweet, it seemed almost all show to me. The musical aspect I loved in the past was somewhat lost. I don't want her to become like Britney who is all show with no musical substance.

Madonna to me has always been the perfect combination of style and substance. In the last couple of years, she has been too much about the style. I don't want her to lose the style, but just bring back some of the substance too.

  9. You can still do an uptempo tour with a different type of music. Why does it have to be just predictable dance things? You can move around and dance to all kinds of music from more pop things to rock songs.

Madonna has always said people shouldn't think in a limited way and should think outside the box. What happened to that? She says she likes to try new things and step outside of her comfort zone. Why can't she apply that to her tours?

But now you are telling me she can only do dance music with aerobic style choreography. What happened to the tour elements of singing, presenting great songs and playing instruments? That is just as important as choreography, dancers and video screens. I was at Sticky and Sweet and the most well received songs were Miles Away and You Must Love me which had none of the "tour elements" that you are going on about.

  10. I can see the Hard Candy defenders are out in force today. I honestly cannot understand how someone can say HC is on the same artistic level as LAP, ROL and Confessions, It just isn't. Maybe they are so worked up because they are trying to convince themselves it's good because they feel they must like everything Madonna does. I tried to make myself like HC since I like every other album she's done, but I had to give it up, because with the exception of a few songs, it's is just bad and boring.

I have no problem with her doing uptempo music. But make it good uptempo music like stuff on ROL and Confessions. Not bad boring uptempo music like HC.

And why does she have to do another uptempo tour? We just saw one. If her tours are going to keep people interested, she can't just do the same thing over and over again.

In the latest Rolling stone, they praised You Must Love Me. They said she should drop all the props and dancers more often and focus on the music. If she did a more stripped down tour, people would still come. In fact, people would be more interested because it would be different and fresh, not the same old, same old.

  11. Thank you! HC was stale and about 3 years too late. And lets be honest 4mins was only a massive hit because of Justin Timberlake.

She can only go so far with the touring.

I think she can do fine with just the touring. But as I said because her tours are heavily based around her new music, she has to come out with some more exciting new music to keep people interested in seeing her live. A lot of artists who tour all the time don't release new music or release crappy music. But their tours are based around the old material. Since she bases her tours around the current album, the album has to be of high quality and innovative.

  12. Yes, we all know the music business is about touring now, and it's unlikely she will have big hits and sell as many records as she did in the 80's and 90's. So I have no problem with her focusing on touring.

But because her tours are heavily focuses around her new music, not just playing her older hits like other artists, it is very important that she continues to make great artistic records. I enjoyed Sticky and Sweet, but I would have enjoyed it more if I had liked the songs from Hard Candy more. It's a matter of personal taste, but I think it's one of her weakest albums.

Because she makes her money from touring and a hit is unlikely, then that should free her up to do more artistic innovative music since people will come see her live anyway. So I don't see why she wants to make music that is tied to the pop trends of the day like Timbaland, since she's not that likely to have a hit anyway. Why not experiment with new sounds, be it rock, country, whatever since she relies on touring, not hits for her livliehood.

  13. Madonna's problems lately are more lack of inspiration and creativity rather than bad decisions business-wise.

Exactly. I have some issues with Madonna's current direction, but that is not really within Guy's control or his fault. His job is to set up business things, not to tell her what to do artistically as far as her music, her videos or her album covers.

I think Guy does a great job from a business point of view. I think the problem is more some of the musical people she has chosen to work with.

  14. I don't want to be negative, but Jesus djing and her daughter dressing up in her Like A Virgin outfit sound kind of dumb to me. It's just going to give the haters and the media more ammunition to make fun of her.

It just seems like controversy just for the sake of it. I miss the old Madonna who was controversial but had something meaningful to say behind that.

But I may change my mind when I see the actual video.

  15. "Celebration" is just as good as any other mediocre hit on radio today.

But that's the point. I don't want Madonna to make mediocre music like the rest of the hits on the radio today. I want her to make something amazing that blows my mind. She has made some great records that were snubbed by radio such as Bedtime Story, Nothing Really Matters and Hollywood, but Celebration isn't on a par with those so I can't get too upset about it not being on the radio.

  16. Actually, like you I am not a club person either. But I would have to say that if you can't relate to songs about "dancing to the music...", etc., that pretty much limits the songs you enjoy from Madonna, especially her 80's albums. So I am curious? Do you like her debut album and Like A Virgin? Because those songs really don't have much substantial lyrics that people can really relate to on the level you're speaking. I would say majority of TRUE BLUE is the same.

I'm not that crazy about any of those earlier albums, but that was more forgivable then because she was younger and hadn't experienced as many things to draw on. She had had so many unique experiences and is well read. Can't she find something deeper to write about? Plus, I was younger when those came out and maybe I was content with those lyrics then, but now I want something deeper.

  17. Really? I disagree. "Miles Away" has been speculated to be about GUY'S and her relationship. And a lot of people can relate to that song, even though it never became a big hit. Though, I would have to say that she has so many songs about "falling in love, fighting with your partner, breaking up and getting hurt." Not only that, it's always the norm by most artist, so why would we want her to keep producing the same messages over and over.

At the same time, you can only write so many songs with different topics before you find yourself re-writing about the same topics. Most artists tend to stick to "love" and "relationship" topics on their songs. Then there are the songs just about having fun and enjoying the music.

Yes, Miles Away is about that, but it is in the minority on HC. Sorry, but I don't go out to clubs and not a party person, so I can't relate to songs about dancing to the music and getting my booty down.

I need to connect to songs on an emotional level. All there party club songs don't allow me to do that. I was saying she wrote songs about those relationship issues in the past, but that seems to be lacking on recent things such as Celebration and Revolver.

If she wants to do something different, how about some songs about hate crimes like the murders at the gay club that happened in Israel or people living with HIV. Life is not one long party, you know.

  18. There were definitely many larger markets in America that she skipped where she could do well, like for instance here in DC.

I think there is definitely a demand for her touring. But I think the format of her tours, the four sections, the dancers, the backing videos including one political one, the guitar reinventions of her older songs have become stale. I loved RIT and Confessions, but a lot of the ideas were repeated on S&S, even though I enjoyed it.

She would probably never do it, but one day I wish she would do a stripped down show with a great band that really concentrated on her singing and the actual songs. Just the novelty might get more people interested to see her.

  19. People aren't expecting Goethe from Madonna, but she has never stooped this low: "My sex is a killa..". What the hell does that even mean? Whatever, I can hardly remember how it goes..

I agree. I don't expect something profound from Madonna or any pop singer. Maybe in the past her lyrics were cliched, but there were about something that people could relate to like falling in love, fighting with your partner, breaking up and getting hurt. But recently it seems her songs have nothing to do with her real life or anyone's life for that matter.

  20. I wasn't talking just about the lyrics. On albums like LAP, ROL and Confessions, she took things that were out there at the time and made them her own in a creative, artistic way. On HC, she just copied Timbaland's style and really added nothing new or Madonnaesque to it. HC could have been sung by anyone. Her first couple of albums had the same kind of anonymity to me.

  21. I'd say that the second half of Madonna's career has been far more interesting than the first.

I agree totally. But that's the one thing I find disappointing about HC. For the most part, it seems to be reaching back to fun and dancing 80's Madonna and ignoring her deeper more artistic periods. Now I understand I'm probably in the minority in liking the later Madonna. the general public seems hung up on Borderline and Lucky Star era Madonna. But I want to see more of the artistic deeper second half Madonna. I only saw glimpses of that on HC.

  22. Anyway, my point was that COADF has very basic song structures, it's verse-chorus-verse-chorus-chorus-chorus-chorus and song over. Basically LIWB is "just let it be, oh let it be, won't you let it be" repeated over and over, I don't see how that songwriting holds a candle to something like "Give It 2 Me" and "She's Not Me" that contain a lot of different song sections. "Sorry", "How High" or "Forbidden Love" don't even have a bridge, I just think that's OBJECTIVELY a worse songwriting. Not to mention "Isaac" that's the laziest song ever in terms of songwriting. On HC "Miles Away" is the only thing that can come close to the repetitiveness of COADF.

That's a very technical definition of songwriting which I don't think most fans and people who enjoy music use. I don't think a song is a better song because it has a more complicated structure. To me, what makes a great song is if it touches me emotionally and is catchy and something I want to listen to repeated times, not how many choruses or bridges it has. Under my definition, the songwriting on COADF is better by miles in my opinion.
