  1. Ok, I love it. I feel the same way about this the way I feel about Medellin. That same sassy, classic Madonna feel to this one. I Rise and Crave kinda gave me Rebel Heart teas, which doesn't imply that they were bad... just... kinda bland.

The fact that we're not hearing any of the rest of the Mirwais songs implies this album is going to be killer. We haven't even scratched the surface!

She’s going to do 2 mins of LAP and then bust into a 13 minute set of Candy Shop (Hey You, Champagne Rose Grillz remix) with looping videos of the twins shouting and dancing and Mercy accompanying on the piano.

    😂

    Interesting...

Is making your star booking (not to mention your own organization) look unprofessional and haphazard a good look for anybody?

    I was just gonna say...

This is all SUPER weird. They only have a few days left to figure this out (assuming this is not some ill-advised stunt). I mean...if it's still up in the air, I can't see Madonna even wanting to do it at this point. She doesn't have that kind of patience and time is money, she's not going to be rehearsing for 16 hours a day for something that may or may not happen.

I believe @Mensch of course, but it's still weird that they're either a) trying to drum up excitement by claiming Madonna has not signed a contract or b) admitting in the open that negotiations have been fraught, thus making everyone look stupid including Madonna. The fuck?!

  5. @Kurt420 You make a good point. I think charts are more irrelevant than ever these days thanks to streaming. Album sales, #1's, weekly chart rankings, I can tell you FIRST HAND that it's too confusing for me now. I used to be able to understand the charts, now I do not. No one I know even cares. We listen to the songs and thats it. In the days of Hung Up or 4 Minutes, it was pretty cut and dry. iTunes and radio. Now it's way too complex. Adding to that, people barely even remember songs that were huge just a year ago. Things are forgotten so quickly. I literally could not tell you what the biggest songs of 2018 were. Not a chance.

I think the way you at least "appear" like you're relevant and successful these days, is by having a strong creative backbone and really creating a project and body of work that means something. Putting effort in the visuals and making it a true cohesive and succinct statement. It sounds crazy, but it's true. Audiences really respond to strong visuals and themes now, kinda like they did in the 90s before the internet shook the entire industry up.

Like Beyonce or not, she figured out how to be successful in this age of ZERO attention span. Lemonade is still credited as a juggernaut of an album with its accompanying short film, and so is the album she made before that with all the videos. I don't mind Madonna sorta following suit - especially because Madonna basically created the world that allowed Beyonce to dream up that kind of format.

Madame X has a solid chance of being remembered as a homecoming for Madonna, after YEARS of floundering in the industry amongst pop stars 1/3 her age. Madonna, her management, her advisors, whatever, they were doing wrong by her legacy by trying to play the same game as some of these girls (Rebel Heart era, I am looking at you). I admit, I started to really lose interest in Madonna during and after Rebel Heart. There was an air of flop sweat and insecurity during that era that kinda made Madonna unrecognizable to me, tbh. I basically relegated my fandom to nostalgia. It was kinda sad. Madame X has so far COMPLETELY TURNED THAT AROUND, and I am very proud. She has an uncanny ability of proving everyone wrong when her back is up against the wall. It's great.

If she pulls another DWT setlist-wise, people are gonna blow steam, not to mention the outrageous ticket price. I can foresee the disco stomper craving queens throwing a major fit.

I don't see any reason why this would be the case if the music is good. Add to the fact that these shows will likely have very fan-heavy attendance and I think the energy in the room will prevent it from being that kind of situation. Idk, I really have faith in Madonna this time. Everything seems really organized, unlike the last album/tour cycle which was just flail after flail after flail. Ugh. THANK GOD we've moved on lol.

A hell of a lot of us here, myself included, have ranked Rebel Heart very high on our Madonna albums lists over the past few years. We've had quite a few threads and discussions about it. For myself, its been in my top three or so since it came out.

Makes perfect sense. She's always tapped into current music, she's just had a way of going about it that separates her from the pack. Exactly.

    Best. Post. Ever.

Sigh, I know, you’re gonna refute anyone who has even a mildly nuanced critique but I stand by my point 👍🏼

I love MDNA and think Rebel Heart is probably her worst. Go figure. We’re all individuals with our own taste and viewpoints. Madonna would appreciate.

I understand the sentiment, but disagree with it. Mostly because much of Madonna’s early discography wasn’t innovative at all. Anyone who was listening to r n b in the late 70s to mid-80s could find a multitude of songs that preceded Madonna’s output and that sound quite similar. Reggie Lucas and Nile Rogers were tastemakers long before they worked with Madonna. And yet it’s with those songs that she made her name. And I loved them all. That’s why I don’t care if there’s a trap beat.

Yeah well she made a name for herself throughout the 90s and early 2000s for evolving into not only a pop legend but also having incredible vision with her music. Erotica, Bedtime Stories, and Ray of Light are incredibly different pieces of work and dabbled in multiple genres and are still credited today as career highlights. That was a sign of her creative confidence at the time. I also don’t buy this idea that her early stuff was generic. If that were true, no one would remember it and she wouldn’t be Madonna. Hard Candy was not generic (1-2 of the songs sucked, sure, and that was cuz there was too little Madonna and too much Pharrell or Timbaland) Who knows  the consensus reason why general public had a milquetoast reaction to RH & MDNA but she wasn’t doing herself too many favors by letting that gaggle of producers take the reigns on those projects. You can hear it with your own ears on some songs. Doesn’t mean they were total failures, but I don’t know if they’re near the top of any Madonna fans favorite albums.

Madonna is at her best when she’s very confident and self assured. You can hear it on Erotica just as much as you can hear it on Music or Hard Candy. None of those albums sound remotely similar and yet the quality is top notch.

Take away the trap beat and the production and it’s as anthemic as Jolene by Dolly Parton. Sucks for those who aren’t enjoying any of this. The song is gorgeous...sweet, soulful, melancholy, heartfelt. That bridge is so beautiful. But there has always been a fan faction that was resistant to Madonna’s r n b and hip hop affinities. Not sure why. 🤐

I think the resistance on the part of some fans isn't necessarily related to genre, moreso related to wanting Madonna to stand out from the crowd musically. I think it would be the same frustrations if Madonna all of a sudden started working with Max Martin/Dr. Luke in the early 2010's or Stargate in the late 2000s...those guys were never hip hop producers, but they were mass music factories that gave dozens of artists hits that all sounded the same. There were similar concernes in 2008 and 2015 with HC and RH, and I think it's fine to want Madonna to stand out. Let's be real, we like her to be the consumate innovator because that's what a lot of us grew up with. She's mostly done a good job though even with the mainstream guys. Some of the stuff on Rebel Heart was excruciatingly cheesy but so far there's no sign that she's repeating those mistakes again. I like Crave, I just don't care much for the generic instrumental, wish it emphasized the guitar more. But if she's aiming for a hit in the USA, this isn't a bad place to start (I still don't think she'll get one because the music industry establishment is super  good at resisting her, even at her best).

  11. I think Beyonce kinda had this strategy with her last 2 solo albums. Bam, release a ton of material all at once, and with music videos. Maybe a hit will come out of it, maybe it won't, but the album will stand the test of time. It was very savvy with Beyonce, but Madonna could take it next level. We'll see.
